She would be expecting the first American black baby to be born in the White House.

And they will name him John-John.

I thought the focus here would be the “as of right now” gem.

As in “We’re too freaking stupid to lie our way out of this one just yet but give us time and we’ll find a way to blame the bankers, the republicans, the one percent or global warming.”

Maybe it’s just me sense I buy everything I wear from Walmart, but I could have made that dress for a lot less..

Hey, wait a second.

We are talking about our top-level elected officials. I'm fairly sure there were lots of Congresswomen from both parties attending the State of the Union wearing clothes that cost as much if not more, and a fair number of men with equally expensive suits. Wearing an expensive dress (or suit) to a formal occasion is not inappropriate — unless we're prepared to jump on the bandwagon of the people who were quite wrongly bashing Sarah Palin for the high-dollar clothes Republican officials purchased for her so she'd have an appropriate wardrobe for the campaign.

I'm about as much of tightwad as you can get; virtually all my suits are off-the-rack from discount men's stores and most of my day-to-day ties are from Wal-Mart, along with many of my day-to-day dress shirts. However, my mother had good fashion sense and told me — correctly — that I needed to have at least one top-quality suit for formal events. It cost her a little less than a thousand dollars back in the late 1980s to give that as a gift, and since it was well-made, I can and do still wear that suit for appropriate occasions more than two decades later.

With inflation, that suit today would probably be in the same price range as the first lady's dress.

I also drive a mid-priced American-made car that's a decade old. Quality costs, but it also lasts.

Let's blame Mrs. Obama for her wrong views, not for spending the amount of money that Republican political advisers would also be encouraging a Republican candidate's wife to spend for clothes to wear to formal events.

Jay Severin said she looks like Peggy Sue on her way to the prom.

I’ll have to say, that dress is the best I’ve ever seen her in.

The usual attire looks like it’s upholstery material.

Price? She spends large. Our money.

The sapphire was a very good color for her. I could not possibly care less how much her dress costs. She is the first lady of the US, and this was a state event. Had she been in something off-the-rack, she would have received bad comments as well.

The first couple earn money, whether it be his salary, her book royalties, or interest on investments. She can buy whatever she wants, as far as I'm concerned.

Yet this forum simply loves to point out how badly the folks at DU treated Laura Bush or Nancy Reagan. Apparently the Obamas don't have the hypocrisy corner to themselves.

Michelle has 22-23 staff working for her. You would think that at least one of them has some fashion sense and advise her on clothes that accentuate the good and minimize the bad. There are simply clothes Michelle cannot wear with her body proportions. Her choice of styles and colors and appropriateness is simply abysmal. It’s that simple to understand . . . except for Michelle.

What my culture sees as 'good' and 'bad' may not be what Michelle's culture sees. Look at Serena Williams, with a booty the size of Wisconsin. For years she worn tennis skirts with ruffles on the backside, which only served to make her butt look like it stuck out even further than it did on its own.

Maybe Michelle's big caboose was what attracted her husband to begin with. Could explain why she will wear things that don't hide her rear end at all.

It might be cultural, as you’ve proposed. However, from the public relations point of view. you’d think there would be someone with some fashion sense. Of course, when the media keeps stroking Michelle’s enormous ego, you have the current situation.

There is also the propensity of women that are mothers of 'tweens and young teens to dress like their daughters. IMHO, her worst wardrobe boo boos are wearing things that look like they ought to be on a 12-year-old, in both style and color.

OTOH, most of the gowns that Mrs. Obama wears to state affairs are exquisite. The gold one she donned last year was georgeous and there was a black and red one that was quite beautiful too. You don't have a lot of room to play little girl games with after 5 gowns.

One of my favorites was the infamous Black Widow Spider red and black dress. When a model wore it at a show it was stylish; on Michelle wore it, not so much. She just didn’t have the figure for it and it looked ugly on her. There have been several times at White House receptions where she wore dresses that really looked fantastic on her, but most of the time — no go. What is it with her and the “boob belt”?

Yes, the spider dress looked much better on the model. This is the gown I was referencing, and I thought she looked stunning.

Man, are they going to need a fleet of trucks from Stanley Steemer when this bunch is finally thrown out of the White House. Also the “Like It Never Even Happened” cleaners, too.

Did the dress make her butt look big?

Nope. Her butt made her butt look big.

Concur on this dress.

The Black Widow dress was hideous. Ugh.
