Indiana Democrats flee to avoid voting (AGAIN!)

With Republican-controlled Indiana on the verge of becoming a "right to work" state, Democrats in the state House on Tuesday took the only step they have left to prevent it, if only for a bit longer. They disappeared. Again.

A final vote on the measure, which would bar union contracts from requiring nonunion members to pay fees for representation, had been expected Tuesday in the House, which Republicans dominate, 60-40.

But with scores of union members and supporters filling the Statehouse halls in Indianapolis in protest, most Democrats refused to turn up for floor sessions -- not once, but twice on Tuesday afternoon.

The absences, only the latest in a series of absences and fierce partisan debate over the issue during the state's legislative session, meant that Republicans did not have enough members on the floor to do business; 67 representatives are required.

And so -- with the national spotlight soon to descend on Indianapolis for the Super Bowl, and with the tense standoff only rising among lawmakers and protesters -- Indiana finds itself at the center of a fight over the role of unions and their power, not unlike the issues that boiled over last year in Ohio and Wisconsin.

Republicans say the "right to work" legislation would allow workers who do not wish to support unions not to be forced to do so, and would entice new businesses to move to Indiana, which would be the first state in more than a decade to approve such a provision.

**Indiana House passes right-to-work legislation 54-44

This is headline from www.indystar.com..sorry guys/gals, haven’t caught on to how to post or link an article to main site :(

On a side note, i was viewing the live feed when the bill passed...watching the dems stall, obstruct & pity party speeches were both painful & hilarious to watch.
Ironically similar to the Wisconsin Dem debacle, they must’ve taken notes.

So is this the new Dem tactic? Don’t like your prospects in a vote so you leave the State to avoid it? Let me guess - did they flee to their IL/Chicago Dem friends, too? They need to hear this loud and clear — WE THE PEOPLE are in control. If the PEOPLE elect a majority that happens to be in opposition to your liking you can’t just refuse to do your job. Perhaps we (the People) should start allotting these people a certain number of sick days, and make them start punching a clock - don’t punch in on days it is required except in the case of a medical or family emergency (verified/certified) then you can be disqualified/ you forfeit the right to take your seat - and your county/district forced to hold a special election to fill it (a special election req. to have at least two candidates and not the person in question).

Maybe I’ll write Governor Walker or the WI GOP and suggest something like this be proposed in the WI House/Senate. The people have the right to be represented at all times, and unexcused absences in order to hold the legislature hostage is interferring with government business, and not behavior ethically responsible of the elected officials who decide to engage in those tactics.

We don’t allow our children to be truant - why do we allow our elected officials to be truant from work???

DIANA: Have you heard anything like what I suggested above being proposed anywhere? I’d have to think it out a bit more, but I think it’s something that could be necessary to perhaps put on a statewide ballot.

It WAS most pathetic wasn't it? Demwit pols invoking dead relatives. Union members screaming, trying to drown out Republican speakers.

Well, bill goes on to IN Senate-then Governors desk. Then onto Super Bowl!

The union collapse is beginning. Here in Michigan we have a group of UAW members actually supporting RTW laws because they know their union is costing jobs and enriching union leadership.

Texas democrats did the same a few years ago and it didn’t work out well for them at all!

The crybaby party from Wisconsin fled too, they lost as well.

Again...they flee ...

It's a pattern all right, the same as the NAZIs in 1930s Germany.

So much for "DEMOCRATIC" Party, or "reaching across the aisle." The chair should offer 48 hours for them to return, and failing that, should find these creeps in contempt. They belong in jail.

It is an interesting trend and one I wonder if Democrats in congress will pull under a Republican President?

Recall what they pulled in 2008 when Pelosi simply turned out the lights in the House for August recess because there was legislation they did not want to deal with.

These people are just insidious.

Anyone think they wouldn’t end free elections in a heart beat given a chance?
