And We Should Hate Newt Gingrich for This? (Re: Bob Dole "Goes Nuclear" on Newt)
Redstate ^ | January 26th, 2012 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 01/26/2012 11:55:13 AM PST by Qbert

All the members of the Republican Party who have been complicit and collaborative in the destruction of our nation in the past few decades always talking about smaller government while never fighting against the tide of creeping socialism have now come out against Newt Gingrich.

Yesterday, at National Review, Elliot Abrams attacked Newt Gingrich for attacking Ronald Reagan from the right.

Today, it is Bob Dole’s turn.

Bob Dole, you will remember from George Stephanoupolos’s memoir of his time in Clinton’s White House, totally cut the legs out from under Newt Gingrich and House Republicans during the government shut down. According to the Democrats, they were within twenty-four hours of caving to the House Republicans’ demands, but Bob Dole surprised them all by caving first.

Dole went on to lose to Bill Clinton and still hates Newt Gingrich for it because Gingrich was the face used to attack Dole — a man who would have been the hero in the fight had Dole not caved.

And we’re supposed to hate Newt Gingrich because Bob Dole caved to the Democrats twenty-four hours before they were going to cave to Gingrich?

Pffffft.

The fix is in for Romney, which just means when he is crushed by Barack Obama a lot of Republicans will have a lot of explaining to do. Newt may not be able to win. But Romney sure as hell can’t beat Obama either if Newt can’t win. The problem remains — Gingrich supporters intrinsically know this to be so and are happy to die fighting. Romney’s supporters are still deluding themselves.

Dole has a grudge against Newt. From their Reagan days.

I wonder if Newt will snark back, “Stop Lying About My Record!” :)

I do remember this.

The so-called “government shutdown” was a beautiful piece of political theater. Because they agreed to fund those parts of the government we couldn’t get by without, and only shut down the parts that weren’t critical... and that was making our argument for limited government better than a thousand speeches.

Because, shutting down those parts we could live without, life went on. Aside from the people who worked in those agencies, no one missed them.

It was just starting to dawn on Dems that they were being had when the Repubs themselves went weak in the knees and they came to a compromise. This actually happened several times and each time it was Repubs who went weak right when they had the chance of the century to school the American people about limited government.

Dole is a great example of exactly what is wrong with the GOP. In a healthier country, he would be a mainstream Democrat.

Looked on by conservatives askance a lot;
..Don’t ask me, hellifIknow
..Why, but on sight of a RINO
The front of his pants would advance a lot.

Imagine how different history would have been (and how much better shape our country would be in now)... if it hadn’t been for Dole’s selfishness back then. And for what?...

Bob Dole. Still living. Who knew.

I don't like Mr. Dole's go along to get along approach to politics either. However, I honor his sacrifice in blood for our nation, his two purple hearts and Bronze Star with V device. Men who shed blood for our country should be honored, in my view, and not mocked. What do you think?

Asking Bob Dole how to win a Presidential election is like asking the Cleveland Browns Cavaliers how to win a Super Bowl.

There. Fixed it.

hey wait a second, GWB made some mistakes but he got elected twice AND he increased the number of republicans across the south elected to office. Further, it was Denny Hastert and Tom Delay that passed spending sprees, GWB just never vetoed any, cause we wanted the votes for Iraq.

Two weeks ago they were all saying he was the ultimate insider and therefore not to be trusted but now they’re saying aw, nobody really liked him at all.” Last night on Micaburr (Michael Berry), Delay came on and lit Newt up, but about all he could say was that he kept changing priorities. He said the ethics charges were “crap”

John Murtha got two Purple Hearts in Nam, he was still a traitorous piece of you-know-what.

To me an attack from Elliot Abrams is an attack from the left. Newt wanted to go harder on the Soviets, whereas the State Dept leftists wanted to go softer (aka give Gorby whatever Gorby wanted). Newt was arguing with Reagan against going softer. Think of it as a variant of Lady Thatcher telling GHWBush to show some backbone regarding the invasion of Kuwait. This is Newt providing support for Reagan to resist the wimps of State.

“Dole?! Who’s opinion’s next? Arlen Sphinctor?”

Nope, actually it was Norm Coleman, of all people. There’s an Op-Ed in today’s WSJ about it. Makes total sense.

He basically outs Romney’s strategy on Obamacare - swear you are going to repeal it, and when you get elected you nibble at the edges of it, give up and say, “Well, I did everything I could.”

It was clear some time ago that Sarah Palin didn’t have a party to belong to but is it true Newt doesn’t have one too?
The vampires are getting so bold they’re coming out into the light of day. Conservatives, do any of you still think you have a dog in the fight with the GOP? Maybe starving the mutt is the only way they might start to obey again?

I personally dont care if he crossed the Potomac with Washington.

He is working for Mitt, after failing miserably against Clinton in 96.

He was a lousy Senate leader to boot.

After he is long dead I still has to live in the nation he helped screw up by his screw ups.

Are you attempting to teach me a lesson on some clever way? He was a LOUSY presidential candidate, but let’s not call him on that because he served. He’s doing a disservice here, but let’s not call him on that because he served. My comment was to insinuate that his time has passed IMO and he has become irrelevant. Don’t read more into it than that. Thanks.
