I would love to live right near the ocean. Too late now; would have to sell property and buy somehwere else. Couldn’t afford it anyway... At least SW OR doesn’t get very cold, compared to many places in the US.

I don’t get many “salesmen” back this dirt lane but I did have a black guy who tried to sell me frozen steaks from his truck, one time.
I sat and watched him contemplate the signs for a long while before he decided to ignore them and open the gate.
I left the dog in the house and went to the door and said “No thanks” while Odin was snarling, frothing, barking and trying to break out the window panes about 3 feet from where we both stood on my porch.
Never saw the guy again.
If he was actually “casing” the place, I reckon wisdom got the better of him.
Stay in the salt breeze if not actually oceanfront in a swampy, tropical climate such as that. Disease and the critters that serve as a vector will become a problem again, in the event of a breakdown. Everyone wealthy enough to leave for the southern Blue Ridge during the summer did so, back in the day. From Charleston, Savannah, Mobile, all the old southern lowland cities. Worked at several mountain resorts while in college, that had their beginnings as summer retreats for exactly that reason. Well, the heat and humidity too, but they go hand in hand.
I live out west but it’s a parallel with where you live in many ways. What I do worry about at dusk is cougars, though.

If your standard water supply has failed but you have an alternate source (rain, a pond, whatever), you can flush a toilet by dumping a bucket of water into the bowl. Or, you can dump the water into the toilet’s holding tank and then it flushes normally.

That's how I remember my mother giving me a bath in the late forties. The stove burned coal. The coal was collected by hand out of strippings. I think we were what you would call poor.
Many people in FL have cabins or 2nd homes up there. Most go once in a while in the summer or for a White Christmas if it snows. Without going into details, we have access to a large 4 bedroom cabin in NE GA if needed but I like it there for a week or two maybe once or twice a year. I’ll take the ocean and take my chances. If I ever need to go elsewhere, I have 4 other options. 2 outside the US, 2 inside, plus staying right where I am. I’m guessing everyone else would end up here when the food ran out and the cold weather got to much to take.
SE breezes are natures repellant most of the time.

It’s the small farmer that they are targeting. They have other methods of controlling the big farmers. The county planning commission probably has aerial photos of your property right one. The only reason they don’t use google is that google maps doesn’t update rural areas often enough.
Maybe your county hasn’t gotten into farm plans yet, but they will.

Okay, I’ll take a look. I’m sort of funny, I always prefer to read than listen, ‘cause it’s quicker. ;-)
I’ve lived without electricity for more than a few years, sort of by choice/necessity/being very poor/living in out of the way places. Have it now, though. I like electric lights much better than oil lamps/candles etc. I got (very) used to bucket baths, no hot water, outdoor toilets, etc. I cook everything from scratch, got used to a lot of things that many people are not used to. Not saying it’s better, but it will be easier for me than some people who live with more conveniences and comforts.
You have cougars? What is the lib infested DNR? (Do Not Resuscitate??)
We have bears but I’m not so afraid of them, since they are omnivores rather than just carnivores. I’ve seen a lot of bear scat on our property and seen bears a few times. Never saw a cougar but smelled ‘em, seen their tracks and scat and heard them screech a couple of times. Shudder. We don’t have wolves (yet) in this part of OR, but I think they’re now in Eastern OR.
Welfare didn’t stop and here north of philly, heard the bus is easy transport into the burbs where the home of the working are broken into, robbed and then the perp simply hops on the bus to go back to philly.

We have black bears.
Sometimes, just for kicks, they attack people.
“Playing dead” just makes their job easier.
They say we have no cougars BUT all the posted signs with 24/7 call lines for sightings *and* warnings of $10K fines/felony charges for “molesting” them seem to back up the sightings the locals report.
