Quinn to ask Illinois Legislature to raise drop-out age to 18

Gov. Pat Quinn--following on President Barack Obama's Tuesday call to raise the dropout age--will ask the Illinois legislature next week to boost the age students have to stay in school from 17 to 18.

"I like the fact that the president said kids have to stay in school until they are 18. Jobs follow brainpower. We have to understand that investing in education, including community colleges, is the key to a nimble economy," Quinn said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" on Friday morning.

Quinn's office said in a Friday release he will propose hiking the drop-out age this year in his annual State-of-the-State address next week.

In his State of the Union address on Tuesday, Obama called on every state to require students to stay in high school until they graduate or reach 18.

Some 20 states already have that requirement; Illinois does not. In 2005, Illinois increased the dropout age from 16 years old to 17.

Obama made the proposal because stronger anti-dropout laws keeps students in school longer--thus increasing their lifetime earning potential.

I heard Illinois Gov’s are limited to two terms:

One in office

One in prison

That would be great if they were able to read and write when they graduated.

But they can't.

May as well drop out of the 8th grade when you are 17, and try to find a job.

Sounds like Obama is trying to shut down those who home school their children.

God forbid anyone should threaten the monopoly of the teacher’s unions.

While he wouldn't mind doing that, I think his main focus is on more jobs for the unionized teachers. Keeping the dropouts in school means hiring more NEA jailers.

Cyber schooling is a threat to Michigan public schools. We have a statewide 2000 student cap on the number that can be enrolled.

The problem is that Zer0's destruction of the economy and jobs has anyone who leaves school, (graduating or dropping out) with terrible job prospects, especially entry level.

If ya can force 'em to rot in a classroom or get a sports (no learning required) scholarship, ya can keep the vocal discontent down, and more teachers employed at reelection time.

I wonder if Obama pushed for this when he was a state senator. The move from 16 to 17 yo happened in 2005, the year he was sworn in as U.S. Senator.

"I like the fact that the president said kids have to stay in school until they are 18.

Dumb. Dumb. Dumb.
An 18 year-old ignorant, disinterested, waste of oxygen criminal is of no more use to society than a 17-yr-old one.
From all appearances, work in the bureaucracy or politics is their only option, where no brainpower is necessary.

Passing laws like this is useful only if it were possible to make learning mandatory.
Otherwise "investing" in education is actually protection money to genetic parasites and hoods.

We are so screwed!

Abolish public schools and you have fixed the problem.

These same idiots think kids are mature enough for sex at 11.

Jobs may follow brainpower in today’s world, but obliging non-students to stay warehoused in state schools for another two years won’t increase brainpower. If anything it will dilute further the value of a high school diploma (if they dumb down classes so the no-longer-able-to-drop-out 17 and 18 year olds can passes them) and worsen the environment in schools for students who actually want to learn, thereby decreasing net “brainpower”.

Yeah, let them waste two more years. They still won’t be able to read or count change.

Well, the liberals did that in CA and it hasn’t worked worth a sh**. Kids still are not graduating at a very high rate and they just show up at school and don’t do the work. The teachers aren’t worth a crap so how do they expect the kids to learn anything. This 18 year old crap is just another way to keep them in the indoctrination centers another year. In fact, back in the 1950s in CA the drop out age was 16 and kids graduated at a much higher rate than they do now.

I believe the phrase is, "Killing two birds with one stone". Shutting down homeschoolers and more jobs for union teachers in an election year? What more could one possibly want?

Obama made the proposal because stronger anti-dropout laws keeps students in school longer—thus increasing their lifetime earning potential.

Thus lowering the quality of education for the students that can actually be educated.
