Washington (CNN) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta is acknowledging publicly the key role a Pakistani doctor who assisted the United States ahead of the strike on Osama bin Laden's compound last May that killed the terrorism mastermind.
The doctor who provided key information ought to be released, Panetta told CBS's "60 Minutes" in a segment set to air Sunday.
"I'm very concerned about what the Pakistanis did with this individual," Panetta told CBS. "This was an individual who in fact helped provide intelligence that was very helpful with regards to this operation. And he was not in any way treasonous towards Pakistan."
Dr. Shakeel Afridi helped the CIA use a vaccination campaign to collect DNA samples from residents of bin Laden's to verify the terror leader's presence there.
Pakistan, which expressed its anger over the raid without consulting Pakistani authorities, has charged Afridi with treason.
"Pakistan and the United States have a common cause here against terrorism, have a common cause against al Qaeda," Panetta said. "And for them to take this kind of action against somebody who was helping to go after terrorism, I just think is a real mistake on their part."
Panetta said Pakistan can discipline Afridi in whatever manner it deems appropriate but the doctor should be released.

Questions for Leon and the Obama administration: Is the US going to continue giving Pakistan three billion dollars a year?
Where does that money go? How many Ameicans will be killed by terrorists helped by that country with our own money?
Leons crew sold out the NOC an should have extracted the doctor if his involvement was exposed. As usual Obama Inc fubars all they touch. Blue badges need to be filtered after this administration is kicked to the curb.....grrrrr....
Panetta is a poser that will get more people killed.
Doom on him.
The Son of Bitch in the U.S. who divulged his name should be shot.
Why is Panetta PUBLICLY discussing the role of this Pakistani doctor? Seems like it would put the doctor and his family in additional danger.
My thoughts exactly.
They, Panetta and zero, really need to STFU about the Navy Seals as well. Too much info given out to the public.
Sorry....don’t trust anyone and don’t believe Osama was killed in the raid...
Exactly ! How did the Pakistanies find out about this Dr ? Obama and his crew did too much blabbing ( bragging ) about this operation .
Because Panetta is a GD Idiot and a muslim sympathizer along with his boss, the idiotinchief.
Don;t kid yourself. Obama wants the doc DEAD!!
Maybe the good doctor was not as helpful previously believed? Or,in this upside down backwards world we are living in perhaps he was to helpful?
This is mind-boggling, to tell the world how key information was obtained and then to not even have made arrangements to protect the doctor and his family.

You mean we shouldn’t have thanked him on Facebook and Twittered his kids at school?
Notice every time a SEAL Team does ‘anything’ it is qualified with “SEAL Team 6 took out Obama”
OOPS meant to say Osama not Obama ...sorry.....
They basically revealed everything but his home address.
The only problem here is the person they supposedly killed was not Bin Laden.
He died years ago. If it was Bin Laden, there would have been no problem showing video and photos.
We never saw a damn thing.

Then you answer it:
Seems like it would put the doctor and his family in additional danger.
To which I might add this:
To: Bobkk47*sigh* Still on track...
Before he is done I fully expect him to release the names addresses and phone numbers of anyone anywhere in the world who has ever provided any information to agency workers.
The damage to US intel will last multiple generations.

I am sure Osama was gone in 02 or previously, this is all pomp for an election.
Shooting "over par" for this administration, as usual.
Panetta wants the Doc dead, dead men tell no tales.
Couldn’t agree more.... Leon’s an idgit polidiot !!
This sentence doesn't make sense.
Correction: the CIA ruse was not about Polio vaccinations, but about Hepatitis B vaccinations. The Polio vaccination campaign is real and ongoing. The Pak government is rightfully angry as the ruse endangered and created anger against real health care workers in legit vaccination campaigns.
It is an unfortunate price of war. That is the basis for the treason charge as vaccination campaigns have suffered and legit health workers have been denied visas and have been harassed by ISI agents.
Secretary of State Clinton called Pakistan President Zardari back on September 1, 2011 to ask for Afridi’s release from his arrest by the ISI.
A week later, the “Abbottabad Commission” imposed a ban on travelling for all persons related to Abbottabad incident, including Dr Shakeel Afridi. He was the only one named.
Later, his involvement in a fake vaccination campaign was leaked to the press by the Pakistani’s. That’s how it all came out.
There were 7 health care workers in the CIA op, only Afridi was recruited. BTW, a nurse did get into the compound but didn’t succeed in getting any DNA.
Afridi deserves some of the reward. BTW, his family has gotten out of Pakistan and he will likely get out too after things cool down.
Thanks for the update. I hope the Pakistanis don't have him rubbed out. He really went out on a limb. Whatever his motivations, he deserves to be rewarded, not tortured, killed and dumped in an unmarked grave.
Thanks gandalftb. If he’s so worried about him, why does he bring it up?
Afridi is a CIA asset, harm to him would scare off present and future assets, of which we have many in Pakistan. We need him out and promised him he would have our protection.
Panetta is telegraphing to Pakistan to let him go, that Afridi is a US asset and harm would have severe consequences. We have resettled all of Afridis family.
Afridi is actually being held by the ISI in a sort of house arrest, very comfy, in Peshawar. He is allowed to see friends and family.
Technically, Afridi is in a civil detention that can last only as long as the Abbotabad Commission lasts. We are trying to get them to set a timeline for ending it and thus releasing Afridi or charging him, which the Pak’s would be very foolish to do..
Unfortunately the Commission’s goals have turned from finding out how UBL could hide under their noses to a witch hunt for anyone that helped the raid.
