Panetta: Iran Could Develop a Nuclear Bomb Within a Year

U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta warned on Sunday that Iran could develop a nuclear bomb within a year and reiterated that the U.S. would do anything to stop it.

In an interview on the CBS program "60 Minutes" Panetta said, “The United States, and the president’s made this clear, does not want Iran to develop a nuclear weapon. That’s a red line for us. And it’s a red line obviously for the Israelis so we share a common goal here. If we have to do it, we will do it.”

He added, “If they proceed and we get intelligence that they’re proceeding with developing a nuclear weapon then we will take whatever steps are necessary to stop it.”

When asked if “whatever steps necessary” include military steps, he responded, “There are no options that are off the table.”

The comments are very similar to ones Panetta made in an interview with the same network, CBS, in December. In that interview he said that Iran is a year or less from “N-Day,” but the United States will stop it – no matter what.

In Sunday’s interview Panetta repeated his estimate that Iran will be able to produce a nuclear bomb in a year.

It’s not the nuke they will be able to launch, but the electormotive pulse technology that they will include in the package that I fear the most.

This reminds me of last Tuesday’s State of Obama, and his snarky, self-aggrandizing remarks gloating UBL is no longer a threat, and the liability of Iraq is forgone. No mention of the ongoing hits in Afghanistan, nor the deployments to Africa. No mention of Iran.

And we could just as easily turn iran into a glass covered parking lot within a year if they try to push their luck. We have the upper hand in the game of nuclear poker. One little point lost on imawackjob is that the US is the only country that has ever nuked one of our enemies. If they keep their crap up, they can be the second one.

Really? Wow?

I’ve been hearing they could have the bomb “in months” or “within a year” for how long?

Seems almost as long as I have been hearing about the demise of Social Security, so that’s a pretty long time /S

We set them back pretty good with Stuxnet. Whacking their leading thinkers as new ones appear sets them back, too.

Years ago our intel screwed up and didn’t realize that Pakistan was as far along as they were until whoops, they set one off.

Haven't we heard this about 5,379,272 times in the last 5 years?

I have little doubt that they have the capability to build an actual nuclear bomb... The question is do they now have the ability to project power with it?

The nuclear pulse projection is the major problem. If and when they begin to develop missile power along with miniaturization of the payload is when countries will begin to worry.

The problem today is that most countries either ignore the problem or assume that it will be used against the west (to their good) but it will backfire at some point in the future.

The safe bet is to stop this before it happens but only Israel thinks that should happen...

The Ayatollah’s Iran knows full well the potential of a nuclear program in a neighboring state but it doesn’t stop them from coming up with crap about their own program being “peaceful” :

SEPTEMBER 30, 1980 : (IRAN-IRAQ WAR: IRANIAN ATTEMPT, USING F4 PHANTOMS LEFT OVER FROM PRE-REVOLUTION IRAN, TO DESTROY IRAQ’S OSIRAK NUCLEAR REACTOR; IRAN FAILS DUE TO POOR PILOT TRAINING)

After this little man has killed a half billion or more people, the media is going to stand around and blame everyone for not doing anything when we had the chance...when he was over here visiting the UN all the time making speeches...when he was at our universities...flying over our airspace...

It’s enough to make you cry.

USA will never attack Iran with nukes—even if they blow up New York and blame some shadowy terrorist group for the deed. Obama will go to the UN (If its still standing) and ask for sanctions and a strongly worded note. Obama will never use Nukes. Now Newt just might....

This is the way it always works. Merely calling someone a Nazi these days or comparing them to Hitler is inflammatory. But back in the day, he hosted the 1940 Olympics, he was praised as a great leader who lifted Germany up and put it back on its feet, and just had a little forgivable quirk or two. Ahmadenijad is not quite so affable, except to Left Wing eggheads at Columbia U, but he’s every bit as deadly, only moreso.

Thanks Eleutheria5. It’s amusing that Panetta thinks that he has something to say about what the US response will be, just because Zero let him snuff bin Laden and those Somalian pirates. He’s been SOD for how long? And he’s had two successes?
