Is Mitt Romney a natural born citizen? It is absolutely clear that Mitt Romney is NOT a Natural Born Citizen unless he can prove that George Romney gained citizenship from naturalization prior to Mitts birth in 1947.
Mitt Romneys father George was born in Chihuahua, Mexico in 1907, the son of Gaskell Romney and Anna Amelia Pratt. Three generations of Romneys lived in Mexico because Miles Park Romney, a polygamist, moved the family there in 1884 as it became increasingly clear that the U.S. government would not tolerate polygamy in the Utah Territory.
The 1882 Edmunds Act stripped polygamists of the basic rights of U.S. citizenship, denying them the right to vote, serve on juries or hold office. Not dissimilar to current immigration raids, U.S. federal agents hunted and arrested polygamists. Polygamists were forced to leave the country or risk jail.
Miles Romney chose to leave the country, bringing his multiple wives and children with him across the southern border. In his 1902 book The Story of the Mormons, author William Alexander Linn states that the Secretario de Fomento of Mexico related that The laws of this country [Mexico] do not permit polygamy, and that the contracts for the establishment of Mormon colonies in Mexico required the same. If true, Miles Romney then knowingly arrived in direct violation of Mexican immigration law.
Utah became a state in 1896, only after laws were passed there prohibiting polygamy. While polygamy may have been illegal in both countries, the Romneys still found Mexico more to their liking. All four of Georges (Mitts father) grandparents would live out their days in Mexico, with Annas mother Dorsey being the last to die in Chihuahua in 1929...

If this is true, and I have no idea if it is or not, then it would explain why the establishment Republican party has continually avoided the birth certificate issue surrounding Obambi.
Gee, I hope the Dems point out this little flaw in Mitt’s lineage. Now THAT would call for some popcorn!
Good observation. You may be right.
well, they can’t call us inconsistent. lol

Great link .... reading down past the ‘natural born’ issue, there is lots of good info on Romney pertaining to his record & stand (or not) on the issues.
The Edmunds Act did NOT take away USA citizenship and the entire lineage were/are citizens of the USA.
Oh boy lets open up lots of worm cans. No love for Mittens here but his only opponent in striking distance was adopted as a child, born to a teenage mother absolutely no info on who the biological father might be heck the mom might not even know for sure. Do we really want to get that picky with our guys when it is plain that most do not care or even understand the issue and that most includes judges etc that are supposed to have training in such things.
Maybe a private citizen in some state can request that Mitt prove eligibility to be on that state’s primary ballot ala Georgia.
Stop spreading lies....it took me about 30 seconds to refute your claim!
"Gingrich was born at the Harrisburg Hospital in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on June 17, 1943, as Newton Leroy McPherson. His mother, Kathleen "Kit" (née Daugherty; 19252003), and father, Newton Searles McPherson (19231970),[citation needed] married in September 1942, when she was 16 and McPherson was 19. The marriage fell apart within days.[5][6][7] In 1946, his mother married Army officer Robert Gingrich (19251996), who adopted Newt.[8]".

Great find;)
and why Pelosi and the other democrats are pushing for a Romney nomination
How did George hiomself run for president? Clearly he was born in Mexico. That disqualifies him under the most liberal definitions of “Natural Born Citizen”. I am not old enough, but was this even an issue in his presidential campaign?
In fact you can get all sorts of public information about these people on the internet. So, where'd you get the idea his father is unknown?
With Romney, there's certainly a few legal issues to be addressed, and I'm sure he hired some lawyers to work up all the answers.
I think the big one behind Romney is that Mexico never made any of them citizens. American laws at the time they returned to the US are the controlling authority in this ~ not current law, not immigration law as it was in 1961, nor any sort of international law regarding stateless persons.
I do think the “native born citizen” question was problematic in the case of George Romney. In the case of Mitt, under our laws, he’s a natural born U.S. citizen for two clear reasons: his mother was a U.S. citizen and he was born on U.S. soil.
In the case of George Romney, his grandparents didn’t automatically lose their citizen by moving to Mexico. Even if his grandparents took Mexican citizenship, they wouldn’t lose U.S. citizenship under our laws because we’re happy with dual citizenship.
But, what about their children and their grandchildren? For how many generations does our law countenance citizenship being passed down from parent to child, in families that are living overseas?
I wonder, did or does the Romney clan in Mexico pay U.S. income taxes? Are they registered to vote in U.S. elections? Do they serve on juries in the U.S.? Do their males register with the U.S. draft?
WHAT does U.S. citizenship mean anyway (other than qualifying for food stamps)?
I think the passing along of citizenship from one generation to another, of people who live overseas and do not participate in the civic life of the country needs to be addressed by the U.S. Congress.
I don’t think we need to get retrospective about this, George Romney always thought of himself as a U.S. citizen. Accordingly, he never filed to naturalize and he thought he was qualified to run for President. It wasn’t an issue in 1968 and, so, wasn’t considered by the courts. That would have been interesting.
As for Mitt, he’s has the same two claims to being natural born as does Obama (an American mother and born on U.S. soil). Mitt’s father may or may not have been a U.S. citizen, who knows? Obama’s father was definitely not a U.S. citizen.
I cannot find what the law was at the time of the immigration.
I don't think George Romney's run for president ever got to the point of determining natural born status. I don't remember specifics of 1964 but by spring of 1968 it was pretty much settled that Nixon would be the candidate.
Does that site quote the CITE of the act and the applicable language.
The Edmunds Act did not do what he claims.
Thus the whole point of that story is moot.
Both his parents were citizens when George was born. The Edmunds Act did NOT take away USA citizenship.
The article is historical Fiction!!
Only in Romney’s demented mind does fugitive polygamist = Mexican
How Mitt Romneys Mexican-Born Father Was Eligible to be President

The laws of this country [Mexico] do not permit polygamy,`` but it`s legal for you to have as many mistresses as you can afford. {Polymistressy]
Off topic but just realized: Heaven help me, this is the first election cycle in which I am older than all the presidential candidates!
OOPS! Newt is a few months older, and I never checked on Ron Paul since I don’t consider him a serious candidate. More coffee!
Fascinating. Really, very interesting. However, it would seem that mitt is an American citizen. Not a naturalized one. There are many Americans, like my son, who are born outside the country to an American citizen. Even if their births happened outside this country. Even if they are automatic citizens of the birth country. Citizenship is a zero sum game.
But is he a natural born citizen? This is a question that needs clarification by the courts. Is my son? Was john McCain? Would an anchor baby be one? We need an amendment to the constitution. It is not as crystal clear as it should be.
Another reason for an addendum to the constitution. What about adopted kids? From other countries, under the age of 5? Could they ever e president? Adopted, with only one birth certificate, but from originally another land?
It shouldbe ok, like its opposite, barack’s mom, who was too young to even confer ANY citizenship to her baby if he had been born, as many suspect, in Canada at a home for unwed mothers.
But, what about their children and their grandchildren? For how many generations does our law countenance citizenship being passed down from parent to child, in families that are living overseas?
Bingo. That, now, is a real other issue. Does mitt have any ties to Mexico today.
You can read about Romney’s ancestry here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pratt%E2%80%93Romney_family
From the early 1800s until now. His g-grandfather Miles Park Romney had 6 wives.
>If this is true, and I have no idea if it is or not, then it would explain why the establishment Republican party has continually avoided the birth certificate issue surrounding Obambi.<
Romney said it during the debate.
Newt attacked him on an immigration issue and Romney said his father was born in Mexico.

This headline is untrue. There was no jus soli in Mexico when George Romney was born. George Romney was not born a Mexican.
I have a suspicion as to why Romney is the elitists’ guy and why they are so desparate for him to be the candidate against Obama. The writing is on the wall for Obama. The birthers have been held back with the “no standing” game but now, it is different when canidates are qualifying for the ballots again.
When Obama gets nailed and blocked from a ballot, the elite will screech, Romney isn’t qualified either and make their power to ignore the constitution it into a massive bi-partisan circus. They don’t want to talk about the crimes and treason involved in both parties - putting an unconstitutional man in the white hut.
I think this is why Romney is the heavy, fire breathing candidate of the Rinos who conspired with the DNC to put an illegal president in the white house.
Mitt was born in the U.S. and has a U.S. citizen mother and therefore has two of three criteria for natural born, each one which is sufficient. I don’t know about his father. O.K., so maybe Mitt’s grandparents retained their U.S. citizenship. But, regarding his father, George, Gov. of Michigan and a presidential candidate in 1968, did citizenship pass through his parents to him? I’d say that’s questionable. But, it wasn’t questioned in ‘68.
The idea that U.S. citizenship passes through, generation after generation, to people like Mitt’s cousins still in Mexico, who do not participate in the civic life of this country, at some point, no, it shouldn’t. But, I don’t think there’s any precedent of this. I think the Congress can easily straighten this out, with no prejudice to anybody overseas thinking that they are U.S. citizens, by promulgating a rule governing such situations.
I thought I’d give another example: about a 1,000 Confederados migrated to Brazil after the U.S. civil war. For a generation or so, they remained an isolated community within that country. But, gradually, they intermarried with other Brazilians, came to speak Portuguese, and lost their U.S. identity. I don’t think any of them, today, claim to be U.S. citizens by reason of the passing through of citizenship from parent to child over several generations. But, what if one of their descendants did? Wouldn’t that be a curious thing?
Let's get back to reality, Mitty is a flaming progressive liberal. Let's just support Newt and let HIM wax that suckers' tail. No sense veering off into the rhubarb on some wild snipe hunt.
