Obama Tells Woman It Is "Interesting" Her Unemployed Husband Can't Find Job
realclearpolitics.com ^ | January 30, 2012

Posted on 01/30/2012 7:23:08 PM PST by grundle

During his Google+ hangout Pres. Obama tells a woman that her husband shouldn't be unemployed from the growth he has seen in the economy. Obama said he finds it "interesting" because he is getting "the word" that someone in her husband's job field "should be able to find something right away."

Obama offered to do something if she would just send him her husband's resume.

The woman wants to know why Obama is extending visas for foreigners when there is tons of demand for American jobs by Americans.

"I don't know what your husband's speciality [is], but I can tell you that there is a huge demand around the country for engineers," Obama told the woman.

"I understand that," she responded. "But how am -- given the list that you're getting, I mean we're not getting that. You said in the State of the Union address for business leaders to ask what can they do to bring jobs back to America

During the back and forth between Obama and the wife of an unemployed engineer, Obama asked for his resume.

"Can I ask you what kind of engineer your husband is?," Obama said to the wife of the unemployed engineer.

"He's a semiconductor engineer," she responded.

"It is interesting to me -- and I meant what I said if your send me your husband's resume, I'd be interested in finding out exactly what's happening right there because the word that we're getting is that somebody in that type of high-tech field, that kind of engineer, should be able to find something right away.

He's right...as long as the husband doesn't mind relocating to Taiwan, Japan, Korea, China or Europe.

The United States does lead the world in one category, however: closures. In 2009, 27 fabs closed worldwide, with 15 of them in the United States (followed by four in Europe, four in Japan, two in China, one in Korea and one in Southeast Asia). The number of closures last year almost doubled from the previous year, when 15 fabs were shut down worldwide, again, with the largest number in the United States (at four).

Why is the United States losing out on the next phase of the semiconductor boom? "It's not direct labor," says George Scalise, president of the Semiconductor Industry Association. "It's not materials -- they cost the same everywhere. If you go down the list of expenses, every-thing is the same, except for tax policies and subsidies."

Interesting...your semiconductor engineer husband is not, by chance, a minority is he? Well...that’s his problem ma’am. You see, we have to level the playing field and provide opportunities for people of color who were, for decades, disadvantaged in the work force because of white folks like your husband. So folks like him are going to have to step aside until my administration provides that economic justice that was denied to black folks like me. You see, this is all part of the ‘fundamental transformation’ of this country I promised and the folks who voted for me were looking for. You just hang in there. Soon, you’ll be eligible for food stamps and we’ll have done what we could to bring down your standard of living so the economic justice I promised will be complete.

There is a lot of H1B visa competition in that field... for the engineering slots that haven’t already been off-shored. Advanced semi-conductor design is a field that requires constant study to stay abreast of the latest technology too... meaning if you get sidelined for a period it’s darned tough to get back in.

The unemployment rate among those with advanced degrees is around 5%.

This guy may need to move to find employment, but there should be no reason why he can’t find a job in his field or some other field.

Lady husband cannot get work because guest workers from India and China are much cheaper and more compliant to bosses. American workers cost too much and have rights. I have a friend whose parent was from India but she was born in US. Despite her Indian surname, companies will not interview her after getting the resume. She being not a dummy decided to change her resume to read born in India, not US citizen, willing to work 1/3 less. She immediate got an interview and even a job. Once she told them she is actually a US citizen but still willing to work for 1/3 less. The company within a month dropped her. Guest worker program is another tool corporate America intends to enslave all American workers.

Anyone recall that conversation where Steve Jobs told Prez Zippy the “jobs aren’t coming back!” Zippy did not like being told something he did not want to hear. Oh yeah, what are we thinking — Prez Zippy will always think he was smarter and more creative than than Steve Jobs ever was!

Didn’t TI just announce layoffs of about 1,000?

obastard doesn’t care about the bourgeoisie. An engineer is too close to this and like Stalin, he wants to purge any of the intellectual class. He just wants mind numbed robot trolls who live on the dole he “gives” them in exchange for their freedom. Freedom they are to dumb or ignorant or lazy to appreciate.

The guy is an engineer and unless he has some type of defecency, he should be able to find work.

The fact is, that there are jobs out there for people taut are qualified.

Here is a link to more than 4300 oil field jobs, and yes sometimes you hit to get on an airplane to get to the work site.

As for me, I have worked in some crap holes like Nigeria, Saudi Arabia and South Louisiana.

Nifty!
So, like, if everyone who is unemployed, like, sends Barry their resumes he'll, like, take care of it?...Neat-o

Everyone who is unemployed should send their resume to the White house - a sort of BarryList.com (like Craig!) - he is a job-creator after all, isn't he?

/Huge obvious sarc (but it would be cathartic for all of the unemployed to send him their resumes - now -wouldn't it? */evil snicker*)

No disrespect intended, but have you ever interviewed a candidate for a position? A degree is not even close to being the most important aspect for the "winning" candidate. Everyone has a degree interviewing for his job. The guy might be an obnoxious a** h*le. Once I saw Kennedy campaign worker on a resume. There are lots of ways to blow a great opportunity.

Yes, there may be something dark in this guy’s history, but even with that he should be able to find a job in his field or get in some other line of work.

And yes, I interview people quite frequently and it is difficult to find qualified people who are willing to travel for work.

Besides being qualified, the one reason I was offered my job was that I told them I would go any place on the planet to work.

If you would go anywhere, that is a huge signal to a company. Good for you. Maybe this guy wants 2 twenty minute breaks per hour, a company car, and unlimited sick days. And 125K for his entry position. Who knows, but he might be the future cabbie or waiter in Boston. (if he has a doctorate)

YOU ARE 100% RIGHT!!! Companies can get 3 H1B workers for the price of one American.

3:08 the person asked "I work 40hrs a week and there is one problem, I barely makes ends meet.... Question, do you support a living wage". 5:24 into the video Obama said "I am a strong believer in the minimum wage".

Mr President there is a huge difference between living wage and minimum wage.

Jackwagon's 'Winning the Future' economic policy continues to shove our economy off the cliff.

2011 GDP: A 'final, pathetic' 1.7 percent

C'mon, 1.7%? Even Jimmy Carter did better than that...

That stimulus and investment in green tech is really paying off. All hail Obama.

Can't wait to hear the excuses -- oil spills, volcanoes, earthquakes, headwinds, etc...

The real GDP is more than likely, negative.

Driving a truck, 12 hour days, 2 weeks on, 2 off at $30/hour is $60,400. And perhaps the MOST important thing - they have a trailer to live in! (At no charge it seems?) Now if they through in meals at the rigs, that is REALLY a great deal.

My brother was saying the trouble is that guys see this kind of money and after the first or second pay check are either too drunk, or head back home.

For someone young and single and level-headed, they could turn it to some real good.

"North" Dakota water hauling? A.K.A Ice delivering service?

I visited a friend in "North" North Dakota (He could wave at Canadians from his front porch) He had Square water Pipes in his house to allow the ice cubes to flow freely... ;-)

I thought I would never be warm again of course when he visits me in Ohio in the dead of winter he walks around outside in a t-shirt.

When my brother uses the term "that's interesting," by context, it seems to mean:

"I hate that you said that. You are wrong. You are vile for saying that. I disagree with you and this statement. Don't ever say such a thing again and by the way, your socks don't match, your tie is ugly, and your mama is fat."

Translation: "That's interesting," is a polite way of saying, "Buzz Off!"

... as long as the husband doesn't mind relocating to Taiwan, Japan, ...

It's not that easy at least with respect to Japan. The large majority of jobs in Japan require that you are fluent in Japanese, though certainly not all. The 人事 folks certainly don't want to be writing every edict both in Japanese and in English.

For that matter, there are traditional Japanese hiring practices aren't going to work so well for any foreign hire that isn't a very recent college graduate, even if the person is fluent in Japanese. Then there are also the Japanese government documentation requirements for foreign hires that the 人事 need to be conversant with.

The upshot is that it is possible to get hired in Japan, but it's not usually trivial. (Yes, I know; some people just hop on an airplane and manage to pull it off, but they often end up breaking Japanese immigration laws — usually the strictures on guest visas. I myself don't think that it is a good idea to go to a foreign country and blatantly violate their laws.)
