Anyone But Romney: The race by the Republican right to find an ‘ABR’ continues
National Post ^ | Jan 31, 2012

Updated Jan. 31, 2012: Support for former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney has remained one of the few constants during the Republican nomination race. But as contenders to Mr. Romney have emerged and then faded, the GOP still seems hesitant to embrace him.

The most recent candidate to play the Anyone But Romney role is former House speaker Newt Gingrich, who recently finished first in the party’s South Carolina primary.

The National Post’s graphics team takes a look at the ups and downs of the race so far.

Paul’s visit to Maine did help it for him.

“Newt isn’t Tea Party...”

Sorry, Newt is tea party. He was a featured speaker at an early tea party rally back in 2009. Saw him with my own eyes.

“With the Tea Party out of the way of BOTH parties for 2012 and 2016, Romney out of the way for 2012 AND 2016, the dems TOTALLY despised after 8 years of Obama, Rove and “the boys” can run Jeb for 2016 with NOBODY in their way.”

Wonder what kind of backroom deals Jeb will be brokering in Tampa?

What does it matter? The Republican Establishment overlords will get their Romney/McCain/Dole.

I will not vote, work, or donate to any "Republican" group -- candidate only. I can't wait for the RNC to call my house again!

Those of you who buy books from Coulter and the other Establishment drones ought to feel shame, because I feel contempt.

The Establishment got what they wanted, and Obama will sail right on through to another 4 years.

Or like an old boss of mine would say, we’ll jump off that bridge when we get to it.

Trouble is, you have us immanentizing the eschaton over here, and the leninists and maoists of the obamanation doing it over there. Both sides think if the system collapses, they’ll be able to take power. It is going to lead to wrecked cities, lives, and rivers of blood. Not that I’m advocating violence, mind you.

Well said. I would add that Obam will continue to bag tens of millions of dollars from Wall Street and other high rollers at the same time he is pilloring Romney as being another unseemly rich Republican. So the Democrats and the corrupt MSM will be able to continue their sham narrative of Republiocans being the Party of the rich... all the while Corzine and the New York elite deliver bags of money to Democrats.

I want to see Ann Coulter shill another book. I want to see Matt Drudge play us again. I want to see another picture of the Bushes suck up to Obama. Yeah, there need to be serious wholesale changes.

Conservatives need to withhold every dime of theirs and every vote from these scum sucking RINOs.

I do not care if Romney is the nominee. I WILL NEVER CAST MY VOTE FOR ROMNEY. I don’t care how much the Establishment types think I have no where else to go, or that I loathe Obama so much I’ll end up coming back into the fold. NEVER!

Do you know any CT teapartiers who would go to Maine on the weekend? How about any contacts in Massachusetts .... as it is close for them?

I wonder if the fedgov would even put up a fight if a state declared them personae non grata.

There are plenty of registered Republican voters who don’t really pay attention to what’s going on, and only look for superficial attributes in their candidate. This is where Romney’s support comes from.

But Gingrich is in this for the long haul. The fight is far from over.

We don’t have any political allies, you know - only sympathizers. Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, Mark Levin, and yes, even Newt Gingrich will all turn their backs on us if Willard Romney the open socialist wins the nomination and we don’t want to play along.

If we’re going to do something in the worst-case scenario, we’ll be on our own.

Personally, I’m in favor of peaceful secession. Even considering violence is just unconscionable to me. It won’t get us what we want, and we should know by now that the statists will use any civil unrest as an excuse to clamp down on the population at large.

The establishment like Perino , Tantaros, yes she is one now etc all must not read sites like these because they are so out of touch with what the base wants and the way they have pissed on us and attacked Newt has made me sick.

They actually think that many of us will unite to beat obama and say we have to otherwise obama wins

well you know , screw it, Romney is the same as obama but will just give different people kickbacks and pay offs.

The man has done nothing for the conservative cause, heck he ran to the left of Kennedy and that is some feat.

"...he's absolutely cash poor..."

Wrong - I guess you didn't see the news that a Las Vegas billionaire gave Newt a ton of money. The story was here on FR.

0bama and his puppet-masters are following the Cloward-Pivin template. They are well on their way to causing an economic meltdown which will lead to violence and chaos. The American people will beg for a dictator to restore order and that is exactly what they will get.

Rick S has a sick daughter but he’s in Vegas and there is no way he will drop out even though he and his supporters know there is no chance in winning and no way can he beat obama.

Perry I’;ve got a lot of respect for but Rick S has lost my respect.

To keep running knowing he is going to lose and to split the vote thus help Romney and obamacare has pissed me off to no end

Jim's house. Jim's rules. Right now, he wants us all pulling for Newt as hard as we can to defeat Romney.

I retain my skepticism but will keep my teeth together because I see the logic of what he is trying to do.

Romney wins the nomination and I'm sure we'll be having a much different conversation. Let's not borrow trouble...

FReegards...

seems we’re being told that we support a guy who cheated on his wife and who got sick from cancer.

Today all I’ve heard is that kind of stuff or you support a guy who is not conservative etc.

First the paulbots, then the Romneybots and now Rick S lot

I actually like Rick S but why he stayed in and hurt the conservative cause here in FL is beyond me
