Santorum up in Colorado, Nevada with anti-Gingrich commercial
The Hill ^ | 1-31-12 | Sink

Posted on 01/31/2012 3:37:09 PM PST by VinL

Fresh on the heels of announcing January fundraising numbers in excess of $4 million, Rick Santorum's presidential campaign announced a new television ad that will begin airing Tuesday in Colorado and Nevada.

The ad attacks Newt Gingrich as being too liberal for the GOP nomination by arguing that he shares many policy positions with President Obama and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

"All three supported radical cap and trade legislation that would destroy American jobs and drive up energy costs. All three supported giving illegal aliens some form of amnesty. All three sported the government health mandates which take away our freedom and is the core of ObamaCare. And all three of these politician's supported the Wall Street bailouts that was a slap in the face to the Tea Party," the narrator says.

It goes on to refer to the trio as "cap and trade loving, bailout supporting, soft on immigration, big-government mandating politicians."

The commercial is a sharp indictment of Gingrich, with whom Santorum has split more conservative voters in early primary contests. But the ad does little to attack Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican front-runner who is expected to lead in Nevada polling.

"Rick Santorum for President: he doesn't just talk a good conservative game, he lives it," the narrator says.

Nevada will caucus Feb. 4, with Colorado voters gathering 3 days later at caucus sites across that state.

Looks like it wasn’t a very good idea for Newt to tell Santorum to get out of the race so he could compete with Mitt. (Second time Newt has told Santorum to get out of this race). Payback is not fun.

"I vow to fight this man with everything I got. He is a dishonorable bottom feeder."

That makes two of us.

Santorum must never hold another elected office anywhere. Centainly he has earned my eternal enmity.

If you look hard enough, you can see how well Rick Santorum exposes Romney(care):

And Rick Santorum has a way of expressing himself plain and simple like no other.

............Governor Rick Perry did the right and honorable thing, and he put the Country first by endorsing Gingrich.........

I can not begin to tell you how much I admire Rick Perry. He saw that it was not his time , withdrew and supported the best of the rest. Perry is a true patriot and genuinly wants what is best for the country.

Santorum endorses Romney, the proChoice candidate.

Rick voters are an endorsement for Romney, the proChoice candidate.

His candidacy is now an endorsement for Romney, the proChoice candidate.

“Mr. Santorum attacked Mr. Romney’s claim that the individual mandate affects only
‘the 8% of people who didn’t have insurance.’

Mr. Romney insisted that
‘92% of the people in my state had insurance before our plan went in place. And nothing changes for them.’

Mr. Santorum blasted back that
‘what Governor Romney said is just factually incorrect,’
because the mandate affects 100% of the residents who are forced to buy health insurance
‘as a condition of breathing in Massachusetts.’ “

And that was a salient point.”

Darn that Rick for critizing Newt. Oops, my bad, Rick Santorum was criticizing ROMNEY!

Welcome to politics (which is not for thin-skinned folks).

No, no, keep him away from here! He’s already done enough to shame Pennsylvania.

Let him take up residence in one of his best buddy Mitt’s legions of mansions.

Respectfully, Longbow, point me to 1 negative ad run by Newt against any conservative.

It doesn't matter what ads Newt is running. Newt's angle was to be positive back when no one was paying attention to him - and through attrition still be standing so far into the primary. Not so long ago Newt was an afterthought.

The point is, Santorum is doing what candidates tend to do - which is, fight for the winnable votes (often using negative ads) and hope they can outlast the competition. Santorum is trying to win over the anti-establishment/conservative block of voters that have been going to Gingrich. Rick's goal is to stay in the race and hope Newt implodes. It's really not so far fetched either. Remember just a few months ago Newt's name was a laughing stock around here after he called Ryan's budget "right wing social engineering". Paul can't win the nomination and at this point all it would take was for some big piece of dirt to come out on Newt or to bait him into saying something he shouldn't. If Gingrich implodes the only one left standing to stop Mitt the chameleon is Santorum - and at that point he'd try to coalesce his votes plus what Newt is getting for a winnable majority.

Politics is nasty. People should stop whining about negative ads. They are fairly effective and are not going away. The reason the conservative candidates largely ignore Romney is simply because they know they aren't going to win over his "moderate"/RINO voting block. They've all assumed all along, I believe correctly, there that is a conservative majority to be had - which is why they fight one another for it until such time as we are legitimately down to Romney versus not-Romney. We just aren't quite there yet.

I am supporting Newt and have been since Perry proved he did not have the communication skills necessary to win the nomination. But just because many/most of us are supporting Gingrich doesn't mean we should adopt silly conspiracy theories about Santorum trying to secretly help Romney. I wish Rick would drop out too, but the reason he isn't is because he still sees possible scenarios remaining in which he can win.

Santorum is positioning himself for the ticket as Romney’s Veep. I used to like Santorum, but in the last couple weeks I have soured on the guy. He has become a whore. He says he is a conservative, but does everything possible to help the most liberal guy running.

Rick Santorum on Palin and CPAC no-show

“I wouldn’t have turned it down,” Santorum said of Palin’s decision not to attend, “but I don’t live in Alaska, right, and I’m not the mother to all these kids, and I don’t have other responsibilities like she has.”

“I have a feeling that she has some demands on her time, and a lot of them have financial benefit attached to them,”

**************************

Palins reply...

“I will not call him the knuckle-dragging Neanderthal that perhaps others would want to call him. I’ll let his wife call him that.”

Then Santorum is not running to win but running to defeat N.Gingrich ? Thanks for admiting it and making our point....

Santorum is running to stay in the race...for now. That is half the battle, just stay alive and wait/hope for your opponents to self destruct. We've already seen it happen to Ames Straw Poll winner Bachman with her over the top HPV blather. Then we saw Cain implode. Santorum's strategy is to hope Gingrich does the same - and if he can help push him there with negative ads he will.

What do you think would happen if Newt has a meltdown? Say, a "Dean scream" moment? Something that makes it clear he can't win the nomination? Where do you think the anti-establishment/conservative vote would go? Certainly not to Romney. And that is what Santorum is counting on. And the fact that he is still in the race and actually won Iowa shows that just about anything could happen.

I like Santorum, but I don't think he is electable. It's too soon after his 18 point drubbing in his home state. I personally wish he'd drop out, but I can see why he doesn't. Because what I want to happen (Santorum throwing in the towel) hasn't yet doesn't mean there is some conspiracy afoot.

Why doesn’t he attack Mitt? Hummm. I wonder who is paying for the ads? Ricky ain’t got no money.

You want to know why? Newt slammed him hard in Florida telling him to get out of the race. Romney has not done that. Newt should have just shut the heck up and treated Santorum as a friend instead of being a jerk. That is why he is doing nasty commercials about Newt. Newt does not know how to run a campaign. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that he has never ran a difficult race. He has not even run state wide. It is a lot harder than Newt thought I believe. Newt needs to talk with Santorum immediately and smooth things over. There was no reason to bash Santorum today at all.

My question to you was- can you reference a negative ad promulgated by Newt against a conservative? And, apparently, you cannot- which is proper- because Newt hasn’t aired any such ads.

In an interview, when informed of negative attacks by Rick, Newt dismissed them- saying that Rick had a long political history, and if Newt wished to reply in kind- it would be only to easy to do so. But, he would not bring down a fellow conservative. And, he still hasn’t done so.

Finally, you make the point that Newt was at one point an “afterthought”- a “laughing stock”- . You’re right, to the extent that you mean he wasn’t in the top tier. But, guess what? He didn’t run negative ads and smear opponents to tear down everyone else to claw his way to the top- despite the fact that some here think that’s “politics”.

Newt is for a conservative cause- and if the situations were reversed, I do believe Newt would have followed Gov. Perry’s lead and withdrawn.

But, if not that, I’m certain that he would not have gone on the attack against Rick, so long as Romney was still the front runner.
