Romney's Cheap and Empty Win
The American Spectator ^ | February 1, 2012 | George Neumayr

Posted on 02/01/2012 4:32:22 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

Mitt Romney's plastic and philosophically vapid campaign secured an easy victory in Florida on Tuesday night. Sunshine state GOP voters swallowed his "electability" argument whole, according to the exit polls.

It appears that country club Republicans have succeeded again in duping the GOP electorate into crowning a "centrist" Republican. Never mind that "centrist" Republicans rarely win the center. They usually lose the center while sapping the spirit of the party's conservative base.

Out of Bob Dole's and John McCain's tattered Big Tent steps another "reformed" RINO, Mitt Romney, who will receive, should he win the nomination, a similar thumping from the Democrats.

But let's say that he is "electable," for the sake of argument. Who cares? The purpose of politics in a republic is not simply to win but to win on sound principles. A party that pursues victory by scrapping or sidelining its platform will have no truth left with which to govern once it does.

If "electability" is the goal, why don't the politically correct plutocrats of the GOP just call for a one-party state? That way they could win every time.

The "electability" argument is bankrupt on both philosophical and practical grounds. It destroys the party's soul and guarantees defeat.

Even though Romney paid for this Florida win on his debit card -- outspending Newt by millions -- he still couldn't nail down the rank-and-file vote. Seven out of ten self-described conservatives didn't vote for him. This foreshadows the boredom and disgust that will keep conservatives home in the fall.

I hate to say it, but I think the seniors did have a lot to do with Romney’s win, especially older women.

They vote faithfully and he targeted them in a big way. I think he’s creepy looking, but they actually thought he was handsome (one of their criteria for voting, apparently) and just such a nice young man.

And he scared them about Medicare and SS; we may think Obamacare/Romneycare is completely undesirable, but a lot of these people actually want it.

“Very good observation!”

It is an interesting question; but, the author misses the point. Having two major “parties” allows more of the elites to “feed at the taxpayers trough” while creating the ILLUSION of opposing forces.

The elites at the top actually have the same goal; to maintain and increase their power while moving the rest of us towards the same socialistic goal ...which means NO MIDDLE CLASS and a ruling aristocracy; because its easier and cheaper that way ...FOR THEM!!!

Rage against the machine!!!

I believe Romneys nasty attacks permanently destroyed his own image.

I also believe the attacks by the party exposed their own image, and it isn’t pretty. Time for another party .

The last time you and I voted (in Tennessee) during the 2008 primary, it was all but over with. McCain was already steamrolling along and half the candidates on our ballot had already dropped out.

I want my vote to count. I’m tired of being effectively disenfranchised.

That would be interesting. I wouldn’t put it past the RNC.

A third party is free to emerge anytime.

I think it's time.

I think it's time.

If Romney ends up the nominee, then it's undoubtedly time. Let's see how they can do without the Tea Party and other conservatives and republicans.

One of the big things I think we will see is the ‘sudden’ reversal of the RNC to sanction Florida for ‘violating’ the RNC rules and moving up their primary. Thereby giving Romney double the electors that Newt would have received if Newt had won the primary.

Yes. They will be forgiven.

Who toyed with conservatives until the last minute all the while collecting $$$ that could have been used to provide the financial foundation for lesser known but solid candidates? Who sucked up media attention that could have been focused on those same candidates?

Romney as POTUS? No thanks. It’s terrific that he is a successful business man. Is that a reason to have so many tax sheltered off shore bank accounts? Not if one aspires to the presidency. Romney, who fled to Paris during Viet Nam, his dad George along with his 5 able bodied sons have all avoided service to the USA. This man with his Romneycare, his once pro abortion views, his once anti-gun stance, his solidarity with establishment pubbies, must be defeated.
