They should also elimnate all restaurants, all snacks and candy and pastries, all luxury foodstuff (lobster, caviar, etc) and allow ONLY staple food items.
Make living on food stamps HARD and not easy. Basic instead of comfortable.
Provide incentive to make one’s own money.
I’m sure the deadbeat thieves have already figured out how to scam this. They use the card to buy someones normal groceries and the buddy give them cash less $5.

USDA research done during the George W. Bush years showed that food stamp users allowed to get any grocery item included a smaller, not larger proportion of salted snack and soft drink products in their food orders. You are “fighting as though beating the air” as the bible puts it. Even bums on a budget are frugal, it turns out, and the overhead to do what you say you desire would be large.

Look past the headline into the principle and you’ll realize that someday you will not be able to buy or sell anything without somebody approving it.
There was a story from early last year that EBT cards were being swiped on at least one cruise ship. I believe it was on the west coast.

Why don’y they just kick anybody using the cards there off the rolls and be done with it? Otherwise it’s just a battle of wits as these deadbeats figure out a way to get around each new restriction.

This won’t do a damn bit of good. Any time you hand out a pile of cash to a bunch of scamming deadbeats, they will find a way to use it for the wrong purposes. My brother likes to tell the story of how in the 80s when Reagan gave out surplus Army cheese to the poor, the bars in the bad part of the city started offering free grilled cheese sandwiches as an incentive to come in. People will take anything they are given and sell it for what they want.

My conclusion is that Communism is really just Capitalism to the ultimate extreme where products and services being freely bought and sold isn’t the model, it’s creating the ONLY OPTION via force; e.g. taxation, regualation, fees and permits that the true 1% of 1% enforce, the Nomanklatura (Obama, Reid, Soros, Buffett, Clinton, etc) enjoy.
A mini-fiefdom of Fascism, that eliminates all competiton by brute Government force (law) to squash the individual.

Most welfare recipients used to receive a monthly check for non food items. This is now loaded onto the same card.
The cash portion of the card may be used for any transaction in virtually any cash register or any ATM anywhere in the states.

It’s always much harder to fit those TANF cards under the stripper garter than it is a dollar bill.
Not an issue....go into any ghetto, and Food Stamps, EBT’s, etc. are exchanged for ALL the necessities: cash, crack, tatoos, liquor, pot, you name it. You can cash-out your handouts to nearly ANY grocer/convienience store/etc. in ANY major city, or barter them on the street in “da hood”.
But political donations will still be allowed.
Do not get me started on this one. Convenience store I work at (Branson, MO) just began accepting.
Evening prior to that acceptance, a slimy couple came in the door. Opening salvo of the _resident’s voter was used. “You DO take food stamps, right?” After indicating in the negative, female said “No biggie”.
Their purchase was two 20 ounce sodas (1.50 a piece), a bag of Cheetos (3.69) and a box of Condoms.
Before their is any lauding of her responsibility, I personally believe the responsibility was only for her fear of contagion.
Food Stamps are not for your CONVENIENCES. They are to give assistance to Basic needs.

As our economy grinds to a halt, I’m sure many vendors would be willing to accept baby seal pelts as payments. In some areas I’m sure those that didn’t accept food stamps are already out of business; when you read about the record number of Americans on food stamps, this is no longer the urban nightmare scenario, but more an indication of the plight of a large number of regular people.

Well dang, this should have been notice way before now. I’m not able to gamble at casinos so why should we pay to have others be able to do the same. I hope they are unable to use the cards for face lifts or tattoos either.

Let me more specific so as not to offend, (insert eye roll) Convenience stores should not be places that accept food stamps.
I am certain that the Founding Fathers, and some of the idiots who believed they were helping when program was established, did not intend to be stroking checks to 7-11, JoeBlo’s Ez Stop, or the Drop-N.
Since we live in the twilight zone anyway, I guess it makes little difference.
Walmart is a liquor store here. So are they going to stop debt purchases there?
I am well aware that one rule leads to others, but... if the program is to remain, it should be for only specific items. (That also will bring out shiners and Exception Bullies)
It used to be 2 for 1, I remember reading. $100 worth of groceries bought with food stamps nets the recipient $50 cash.

I am more concerned that along with munchies before an intimate encounter, any party has the thought “oh yeah, I have free money from the government.”
I have to disagree, HTR. All of the items are electronically scanned in almost every location in the country. The card is also electronic. Any attempt at scanning an unacceptable item would automatically kick it out. Besides, it doesn’t seem to be hard for folks to reject a cigarette purchase made on the card, so I see no big deal even if it’s done by the cashier.
That process would not be hard or costly. And the study you cite simply says some are frugal. Those who aren’t are still a sizeable number, and if there’s any way to plant the idea that good things happen when people use their own money, then that is a neat lesson to teach.
