Gen. Boykin Blocked At West Point
CNS News ^ | 2/1/12 | Ken Blackwell and Ken Klukowski

Posted on 02/01/2012 3:12:09 PM PST by rhema

A three-star Army general and war hero cannot speak at West Point because he’s an outspoken Christian. So the Obama administration’s hostility toward religion—and especially Christians—continues even to the detriment of our men and women in uniform.

Lieutenant General William G. (“Jerry”) Boykin is like an action-movie hero. When the super-elite Delta Force was formed in late 1970s—our top counter-insurgent military unit that the Pentagon still does not officially discuss—this ranger in the 101st Airborne unit was tapped to be part of it.

In 1983 he was in Grenada, where Boykin survived being hit by a round from a .50-caliber gun. (Many anti-aircraft guns are “.50-cal,” and a single round can split a human body in two.) In 1992 and 93, he was part of the Delta Force team hunting (and unofficially killing) drug lord Pablo Escobar. Then in 1993, Boykin was the commanding officer of the mission in the Battle of Mogadishu in Somalia forever memorialized in the movie “Black Hawk Down.”

After these heroics, General Boykin served as the commanding general of U.S. Army Special Forces Command, then commanding general of U.S. Army Special Warfare Center. He also served at the CIA and as Deputy Undersecretary of Intelligence at the Department of Defense.

Jerry Boykin has done it all. He’s been in battle as part of America’s most elite fighting force; then he rose to command those troops as a general, and also served in the CIA and Pentagon on the strategic planning and management side of this equation.

He is also a Christian evangelist who speaks at churches nationwide. As a private citizen retired from the Army, General Boykin was invited to speak at a prayer breakfast at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He seems like an ideal choice, as someone who has served as the tip of the spear at the highest ranks, who is also a man of profoundly deep faith.

But the Far Left exploded.

Boykin has cast America’s war against radical Islamic terrorists as fighting Satan. So his religious language has made strange bedfellows of various Islamic groups joining with atheists to call on West Point to disinvite this American hero who risked and achieved so much for this country.

Evidently, it’s not politically correct to suggest that blowing up children is the devil’s work.

After heavy pressure, General Boykin chose to withdraw. This soldier fears no foe, but the situation evolved in a direction where his message of faith and courage would be overshadowed by controversy to the possible detriment of the West Point cadets.

This sad episode is yet another example of the Obama administration’s ongoing hostility to people of faith, especially Christians. President Obama’s pick to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is a lesbian activist who says that homosexual rights should always trump religious liberty.

This is the same EEOC that argued it had the power to order a church to reinstate as a minister a person the church had fired for violating church teaching, a position the Supreme Court unanimously rejected. And the administration has enacted regulations under Obamacare forcing Evangelical and Catholic universities and hospitals to provide contraceptives against the religious beliefs of those church-affiliated institutions.

Now this hostility is doing a disservice to our military. People of deep faith are opposed and marginalized by the Obama administration’s civilian political appointees. Weeks ago, they were caught banning Bible reading at Walter Reed hospital, a policy they immediately reversed when the media picked it up and House Republicans demanded answers.

All this paints a picture of radical secularism. Many of the greatest heroes our military has ever seen were people of fervent prayer and deep faith. Many find their battlefield courage in their unshakeable belief that their sins are forgiven, their lives are in God’s hands, and that when they die they would go to an eternal reward.

Sounds like the kind of people you want at a prayer breakfast for those who may soon land on one of those battlefields.

Inaccuracy alert.

Two friends of the General (high brass themselves) appeared on Megan Kelley’s show today. It was the good General’s decision to make. He wanted to avoid any media ruckus and has stated that he was not pressured by anyone...including any staff at West Point.

What do you expect him to say, and not risk his Military Career and Retirement, by not doing the "hinted" bidding of The Messiah?

Calling the towelheads Terrorists is NOT in the Lexicon of the Socilaist Muzzie-in-Chief....have you EVER heard The Usurper mention "Islam" with the word "terrorist" in the same sentence?

Ah, yes it’s the old “protect the Cadets” gambit while the Army circles the wagons.

What a shame that a man with such distinguished credentials should “decide” to forgo the opportunity to speak the truth.

Reminds me of the time Zero turned down an invite to speak at Notre Dame....not.

Or the time he backed down on forcing the Catholic Church to pay for abortion pills...not.

Respectfully, You do not know Jerry Boykin. This would not have been on his short list of things to be considered.

Obama, just like with the attack on Catholic hospitals, is hiding murder behind antichristian labels.

Maybe he is not an ideologue and a “genius” as liberals foolishly want to believe.

My religion is none of his business.

These are DIRECT ATTACKS on the military and medicine so as to pump funds from Catholics and the military.

Mark my words, this is a Jesse Jackson murder shakedown moment, with race and religious paranoia to boot.

They are all communists and the American people are acting stupid again

Thank you for the video links. Bookmarked for later review.

I suspect I will be quite interested.

If LTG Boykin ever gets sick of the nonsense and decides to take his skills and lessons elsewhere, I suspect the new government in South Sudan might appreciate an American general who can teach counterterrorism methods to people who fought Islamofascism virtually without help for decades. Same for several other nations, probably including a lot of the senior officer corps of the South Korean military. Israel might also bend a few rules if they decide they like him as much as he likes them.

I don’t believe that he did such a thing. Perhaps you can find a video of Ms. Kelley’s show today and listen to what was said. I happen to believe that the truth has been told by three officers and gentlemen.

This seems unusual. The Army is drawing heat from pro-Islam and anti-discrimination groups for inviting retired Lt. Gen William G. Boykin to speak at a West point prayer breakfast in early February. Boykin has come under fire in the past for comments many have characterized as anti-Muslim. Source for this article: Controversial General to speak at West point

When CAIR speaks the White House jumps. You can bet a quiet call was placed to the SecArmy telling him (not asking him) to fix the problem.

The SecArmy then gets the CSA & VCSA in the room to provide the WH guidance: “Don’t let the Academy get embroiled in this ‘needless’ controversy.”

I can visualize the subsequent conversation with the Superintendent and the inevitable circling of the GO wagons as the word went out to Boykin: you need to withdraw. Then, what do you know, he decides not attend or speak at the prayer breakfast.

I am reminded of the Hassan killings at Ft Hood....you know, the one the Obama administration has refused to identify as being in any way related to Islamic terrorism. Do you recall what George Casey, then the Army CoS, had to say? He didn’t want the incident to have an adverse impact on the Army’s diversity program. Huh?

There are many other examples that could be cited where the Obama administration goes out of its way to avoid any controversy when it comes to Islam regardless of what a cold, impartial assessment of the facts might reveal.

Diversity Obama-style, especially when it comes to religion, is a one-way street that only runs to Mecca. Those with other views need not apply....especially decorated heroes like LTG Boykin who has looked terrorism in the eye but happens to be a Christian

Sir-

I am not what most would consider “highly religious.” (I am not an atheist or agnostic; I'm just not “conventional” in my beliefs.)

Having said that, you sound like you have “seen the elephant” and your premise sounds extremely plausible. I believe you.

It used to be that the GO’s were highly politicized at the 3-Star level and above; now it seems to have become much more widespread. This is a byproduct of the global scope of the military-industrial complex and the quest for control of the wealth and power invested therein.

As far back as the 1920’s we were warned of this peril by no less than Lt.Gen Smedley Butler. Sadly, after retirement from the Marine Corps, "Old Gimlet Eye" (who was a legitimate war hero and a decent man) became so disenchanted with this situation that he eventually joined the far Left of his day. (My guess is that the U.S. government's extremely brutal treatment of the “Bonus Marchers” pushed him over the edge.)

As the Chinese curse implies: we are living in interesting times.

Regards,

-Geoff
