Alabama immigration crackdown costing state billions: study

Reuters) - Alabama's crackdown on illegal immigrants, widely seen as the toughest in the United States, could cost the state's economy up to $10.8 billion, according to a new study.

The Alabama law, passed in June, requires police to detain people they suspect of being in the U.S. illegally if they cannot produce proper documentation when stopped for any reason, among other measures.

The cost-benefit analysis by University of Alabama economist Samuel Addy estimated up to 80,000 jobs could be vacated by illegal immigrants fleeing the crackdown, costing Alabama's economy up to $10.8 billion.

The lost jobs would cost Alabama up to $264.5 million in lost state sales and income taxes, and as much as $93.1 million in lost city and county sales taxes, it found.

At the low end of the range, Addy found the crackdown could cost Alabama's economy $2.3 billion.

“lib BS”
Yep. http://cber.cba.ua.edu/director.html

Citizen in 2007, made director that same year, background, training and education is in rocks and “global warming.” Conclusions presented as `science.’
Looks like another Obama story: no relevant qualifications, an agenda, complete lack of professionalism and no shame.
In other words, a liberal.

The bias in this article is clear from the headline and the lead.

I would suspect that "The Birmingham News" and its sister paper, "The Birmingham Post-Herald," are just as liberal as any other city newspaper. That would explain the bias.

Likely a lot more than the $10.8 billion they claim the crackdown is costing.

For obvious reasons, the Goebbelists at Reuters don’t say who paid for this study. Money talks, especially in academia.

The assumptions in the study include that no job vacated by an illegal would be filled by a legal worker, that illegals were paying taxes, and that illegal families were not consuming social services (schools, medical, etc) in excess to any tax revenue coming from them.

This is bullsh!t. Alabama’s job situation is improving. We have a saying here in Mississippi:

“If Alabama isn’t careful with this new immigration law... every single person in Alabama is going to have a job”.

I haven’t read the whole article and this is just shooting from the hip but when the only reason the unemployment rates are not around 20% or higher is because the government no longer counts people who have given up on finding a job.... there shouldn’t be any jobs “lost”; they should just go to the people who are here legally.

Somebody tell me what I’m missing here.

TOTAL BS. What, are they assuming when an illegal alien leaves a job it won’t be filled by a citizen? BULL CRAP! LIBERAL BULL CRAP, the worst kind. Can’t wait to see how losing Illegals will contribute to global warming....

Legal residents will fill the positions, reducing unemployment.

It’s really simple to see.

Wow. Notice how one thing:

...jobs could be vacated by illegal immigrants...

turns into another:

The lost jobs...

literally in the next sentence.

That's as dishonest as it gets. An illegal alien vacates a job opening it up for a legal resident of the U.S. and that job somehow becomes a "lost job".

University of Alabama economist Samuel Addy, you are a charlatan. Your mother was a hamster and your father smells of elderberries.

I lived in Mobile for a bit. I agree with you. I know a lot of people were having problems finding work. Legal citizen types. 80,000 jobs created imo.

Take the $10.8 billion and divide by 80,000 jobs and you get $135,000 per job. Yet the article claims the $15-35,000 was used for study. These numbers don’t match up and many of these jobs are NOT paying state income tax. Does study assume no citizen takes any of the 80,000 jobs? Most of these jobs would have to be at low end of wage scale since most ILLEGALS fall there. Take a 40 hour week times $10hr times 80,000 workers and it only comes to $1.6 billion in wages yet the study magically grows that number to 10.8 billion. There is no way they would spend 100% on income and sales taxes. Sounds like Obama economy numbers to me.

Do you mean this study? The study done by “Sam is a native of the West African country of Ghana, where he obtained a B.Sc. in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Science and Technology”

Check for yourself:

THe Entire article is pure BS.

Yes there was some pain and adjustment when the law went into effect, but now the proof is in the pudding.

Alabama’s unemployment rate has dropped almost 2% since the law took effect (IE people getting jobs illegals had), crime rates have dropped, food stamp and welfare rolls have gone down, and a nice thing I have noticed SERVICE and QUALITY in restaurants around Montgomery has markedly improved (including the Mexican Restaurants).
