Two Bad Days for the GOP
The American Thinker ^ | February 3, 2012 | Steve McCann

Posted on 02/03/2012 6:15:10 AM PST by Cincinatus' Wife

.......The Democrats and the Obama re-election machine have sat by and watched the Republican Follies over the past 48 hours, and by doing nothing they have gathered manna from heaven for the upcoming campaign.

First, Gingrich is carpet-bombed in Florida, reacts petulantly is taken off his game and forgets what won South Carolina for him...

.....Then Romney is seized by foot-in-mouth disease. By claiming he doesn't care about the really poor and would fix any holes in the safety-net he has reinforced the image of a greedy Wall Street banker out to make money at any cost.

....Mitt Romney then digs the hole deeper and thoroughly alienates conservatives by stating that he would index the minimum wage to inflation and thus raise it every year. This is said in an effort to mitigate the damage from his earlier faux pas. It is common knowledge that the mandatory minimum wage is a disaster for those entering the work force. The unemployment rate for those in the 16-20 age group exceeds 21% and is far worse for minorities in the same category. It has been a rock-ribbed tenet of conservatism that the minimum wage is anti-business and more importantly kills job creation so necessary for upward mobility. Why, if Romney is a true conservative, doesn't he understand?

George H.W. Bush or Bob Dole or even John McCain, all the epitome of Republican moderates, were not this obtuse and devoid of basic conservative values.

However the pinnacle of all this foolishness is the image of a super-rich out-of-touch mogul (Donald Trump) endorsing a really rich out-of touch front-runner (Mitt Romney) for the Republican nomination. Has there ever been a better picture from central casting to reinforce the Democrat and socialist mantra that the Republican Party is the Party of the rich?...

The article sickens me. Newt is petulant. Romney is rich.

Meanwhile Obama is praying to Jesus for guidance 5 times a day.

Does anyone realize this is spin, not what matters, and by savaging each other the republicans bought right into it.

Obama. Obama. Obama. That is the issue.

Didn’t the eGOP warn voters that Newt might say something stupid if he were the nominee?

A Republican running for national office can hardly say anything more stupid than Willard did to a planeload of Democrat journalists. He obviously is going to be a disaster as a presidential candidate, should the eGOP have its way again in choosing another loser for the party.

He has started to believe his own press, instead of realizing that the MSM formed a protection racket to slide him to the nomination.

What he forgets is that this nomination process is far from over.

By September, it is entirely conceivable that neither Romney nor Gingrich will be the GOP nominee. Buckle your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

I sure get tired of “bad days for the GOP.” I’ll never understand why the Democrats are always playing their aggressive hand while the Republicans are always on the defense and babbling along the way.

Add to this the list of donors, a handful of multi-million dollar donors each, to his SuperPAC, including a few characters from Goldman Sachs, and Obama has his job nearly done for him. The polls don’t show it now because the general election campaigning hasn’t started, but a Romney win is going to be an uphill battle, both ways.

I certainly hope SCOTUS does its job and strikes down ObamaCare, or we could very well be stuck with it unless we can get a veto-proof congress. And I wouldn’t count on getting that kind of congress with an Obama win.

I was amazed that even many here on FR missed this point when they jumped to defend Romney’s comments:

“However, and more importantly, he has completely discredited the age-old conservative mantra that everyone should care for the poor by making certain they have the opportunity to rise into the middle-class.  The safety net is not the answer — jobs through economic growth and education is the solution.   It is obvious if one were a true conservative that would be ingrained in their thinking.  Instead Mitt hands a quote to be played over and over again by the Obama machine while further increasing the doubt in the Republican base that he is a true conservative.”

“Obama. Obama. Obama. That is the issue.”

Of course, in the long run, you are completely correct; however, don't be panicked by the stories that maintain: "We have to end the primary ASAP because Republicans are dropping in the national polls." It's a ruse driven by the GOP elites to get Romney nominated.

We're seeing a side of Romney that even most Conservatives had not anticipated; he repeatedly goes “off message” and makes very damaging statements that are “slam dunk” sound bytes for the opposition. Obama and the Leftist media will make mincemeat of Myth as he is COMPLETELY tone deaf and out of touch w/the average voter. Myth apparently has been isolated in a world where everyone agreed w/him and paid fealty in the past. He has no "clue!"

I’ve begun to think the same thing. Its entirely possible they’ll take each other out and then it gets intetesting.

Frankly, let’s hope so. Newt’s the best of the bunch, but we could do so much better. With Romney in control at this point, it couldn’t be much worse. Maybe Bloomberg would be the only worse situation. This should be a great year for our party, and we are all demoralized right now.

And why supposedly smart people like Trump don’t realize that Romney’s a loser against BHO is beyond me.

Most of Newts gaffes are due to emotional, heat-of-the-moment reactions to an unending and insidious attack mechanism against him. Mitt's inanities cannot be considered gaffes because he really believes the tripe he says - the real gaffe is in articulating it.

The only way for there to be a nominee other than Gingrich or Romney is for Ron Paul win enough delegates to deny Gingrich or Romney a first-ballot nomination, and for both Gingrich and Romney to be so unpopular that their hand-picked delegates peel off in later ballots in favor of a new candidate who would have gotten few if any first-round votes. The more likely outcome would be for the Ron Paul delegates to pick the winner between Gingrich and Romney. Not sure that is much of an outcome to be wished.

Joe Scarborough was on Larry Kudlow last night and gave a good take on Romney.

Can someone explain this to me? How does the minimum wage annoy Conservatives and create problems for employers? Sorry, but I’m not very savvy about this. And what is Mittens suggesting that is anti business? I’m sure his position is wrong..cuz just about everything he says is bad..but I need clarification.

Another way would be for one of those two to be forced to drop out and the other to face a growing party revolt, leading to one or more new candidates entering the race. Recent history and accepted wisdom says that cannot happen, but this year might be the one that breaks the pattern.

Taken in context, I have to respectfully disagree that Romney said anything stupid regarding the poor. It was nothing that the media has twisted around. There are far more serious issues regarding him and compared to them this is nothing but does divert from those issues.

Besides, the so-called poor are mostly Dems. Others have been thinking what he said but have been afraid in this PC age to state it.

Minimum wage laws act as barriers to entry for inexperienced people, and especially for young workers. As wages rise, employers increasingly cannot afford to risk hiring people with limited knowledge and experience, as well as a relatively high potential for failure. The initial expense of adding to one’s payroll often exceeds the value of output from each new employee, including expenses that are basically non-recoverable (e.g. - training, human resources, legal, compliance).
