Grocery store shooter not charged, speaks about incident(WI)

The Aldi customer who shot an armed robber in the store Monday won't face any criminal charges, prosecutors confirmed Friday.

Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm said the law allows use of reasonable force in threatening situations, regardless of whether the shooter has a concealed weapons permit.

"He disrupted an act that potentially exposed himself and others to great bodily harm," Chisholm said. Video footage from the store showed "he acted reasonably and in a controlled manner during the encounter," Chisholm said.

The customer, Nazir Al-Mujaahid of Milwaukee, held a news conference to discuss the incident. Al-Mujaahid, 35, called it nothing to brag about, but that "sometimes you have to do what you have to do."

Al-Mujaahid said he and his wife stopped at the store, at N. 76th St. and W. Villard Ave., for some last-minute dinner items. They'd never shopped at the store before, he said.

He said they had just walked in when he noticed the suspect approach the cashiers holding up a shotgun with the stock cut off and a bag, demanding money in a very agitated way. Fearing for the safety of himself, his wife and others in the store, he said, he unholstered his semi-automatic 9mm handgun, cocked it and kept it down at his side as he motioned another customer behind the robber to move away.

When the robber turned the shotgun toward him, Al-Mujaahid said, he fired six or seven shots from about 20 feet away. He said he hit the suspect in the leg and forehead. The robber then dropped the shotgun and bag, and fled the store. Police arrested a suspect and an accomplice later. They had not been formally charged as of Friday morning.

The whole process took less than 30 seconds, he estimated.

hmmmm....we have several Aldi locations around here.
Have never noticed a sign saying you can’t bring your gun in. Will have to check closely next time.

We had a similar incident at a Foodland store around here about 15 yrs. ago. A guy was in the parking lot waiting for his wife who was shopping there. Through the windows he could see 3 young punks approach the front and start pistol whipping a cashier. He waited behind the hood of his truck with a deer rifle and plugged the first one between the eyes when he came out of the store. The other two fled. They did not prosecute. The armed robbery rate around there plummeted after that.

Not sure of the naming conventions in the Middle East, but can we tell whether he may have been Middle Eastern Christian?

The only thing one can count on in these types of situations is the hope you're quicker than the bad guy, and hope the bad guy goes down first,

Right. I believe shot placement to have much more effect on downing the bad guy than caliber choice.

I was simply explaining to you the impact difference between 9mm and a .45.

No, actually, you were offering you unsubstantiated opinion on the topic.

If you want to go on believing it, that's your problem.

I no longer fight the "caliber wars" ... I just laugh at folks who believe in magic bullets.

Sure, we can all slag on the guy for the missed shots and his choice of caliber, but he did stop a felony, the only one who got hurt was the bad guy, the bad guys are in custody, our hero managed to not soil himself when the shtf, and he is free and alive to tell his story.

If I ever have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Nazir Al-Mujaahid, I will happily buy him the beverage of his choice.

Ditto. Thanks for keeping an eye on the ball.

5 out 7 misses, though, says that some extra range time is in order. Like that's a tribulation, esp if the beverages are afterwards. :-)

And the robber has now been charged with this robbery, plus two other robberies in the area.

I would suggest he jam the tang into the crotch of his thumb nice and tight and hold his wrist with the off hand.

Should straighten things out considerably.

Really? How grand!! They picked up an illegal around here on a traffic stop with a gun and his LEGAL permit!!! Just because it is legal, doesn't mean there is not a motive behind it. The bad guys KNOW we are armed. Even in WWII, the Japanese military leader, Admiral Yamamoto said that every American would be behind a tree with a gun! He had been here back then and knew way back in the 1930s that Americans were gun owners!!!

I understand your skepticism. Here's a video of the guy explaining what happened in the grocery store. He seems real sincere.

It's always the same crap on these threads. “Needs more range time”.

Range time and a gun fight are two different things. How many FReepers out there practice with someone downrange pointing a shotgun at them?

I don't care if I empty an entire magazine as long as I've at least put the guy down or stopped him. This guy stopped the threat without hurting any innocent bystanders. That's all that matters.

Nazir Al-Mujaahid did well. No kill shots, but Nazir did his duty to protect his family and other citizens.

Well done, sir.

Opinion?

Question, lets see if you can be honest. Hypothetically, if you had to take a round in the leg, would you prefer it to be from a 9 or .45?

My choice would be really easy, how about you?

but needs more practice at the range.

Or a nice Crimson Trace on his handgun.

Or a nice Crimson Trace on his handgun.

Well it might have helped with the first round.

But probably not. I am guessing that once the criminal turned his attention to Mr. Al-Mujaahid his adrenal gland dumped its load in to his blood stream and all of his muscles started to twitch, his range of vision shrunk down to the size of a dime so all he saw was the face of the criminal and his shotgun.

My guess is that the first shot hit the perp’s leg the second grazed his forehead and the rest landed in the upper shelves of groceries behind the perp or in the ceiling. I doubt that Mr. Al-Mujaahid had much thought of controlling the muzzle climb caused by the recoil of firing his weapon.

Unless you are competitive practical shooter you are not likely to practice the rapid fire shooting techniques that would help you keep your pistol on target in this type of situation.

Laser sights may have helped with the first shot but I doubt its usefulness with the other six.

I’ll side with 2111USMC in his post 32 when he says “Range time and a gun fight are two different things.”
