Europe freeze hits transport hubs

Freezing weather has hit transport hubs across Europe, closing airports, blocking roads and halting trains.

London's Heathrow cancelled 30% of Sunday's flights, and dozens of flights were delayed at Amsterdam's Schiphol.

Transport hubs in Central and Eastern Europe have been forced to close amid the biggest freeze in decades, which has claimed more than 200 lives.

Bosnian officials have declared a state of emergency in Sarajevo, where snow has paralysed the city.

In Serbia, a state of emergency is in place across much of the country.

Thousands of people are said to be trapped in their homes across both countries, and many travellers have been stranded.

"I've been waiting here two days and we don't know what we will do," said Turkish tourist Ducim Tahroglu, waiting at Sarajevo airport.

Ukraine has been hit hardest by the weather, recording more than 100 deaths so far.

How wonderful. The global warming crowd in London are freezing their nether bits off while I’m here in Ohio, and it’s relatively warm. Talk about a win/win.

The global warming crowd will still blame this on “warming”.

Heathrow?

Supposedly an American tourist visiting Windsor castle was overheard to say, "The castle is nice--too bad they built it so close to Heathrow."

It's been a mild winter in Western Europe, good for saving in heating bills. I missed a really cold day as today just for shutting up warmologists' mouths.

I thought all of Northern Europe was getting the cold weather.

What does Western Europe include?

That’s an illusion perpetrated by the commies who screech that we’re in an “extended minimum.” But we’ll just spread the word that they’re the same AGW lefties claiming that we’ll all be in an ice age, covered by glaciers several miles thick.

[Little irony and sarcasm there in regards to some recent, hysterical essays by various interests. Solar activity has been generally weak during this time for a solar maximum, and we’ve seen quite a bit of volcanism. Things might get more obviously colder than usual within three or four years...maybe.]

The truth is that most real estate interests and their associated local, bipartisan socialists/NIMBYs are commies. So are their brats in subjective (meaning personal, emotional, etc.), false research on AGW. Rednecks (like myself) and other undesirables without the latest fashions should head en-masse for the coasts, IMO, before the elite folks find even more ways to keep us out. ;-)

[Seriously, I’ll stay here in my land without summers, though things are probably going to get colder at times.]

I thought all of Northern Europe was getting the cold weather.

Here in Britain it's been one of the mildest winters ever. Only in the last few days have temperatures dropped down to normal or slightly below, with a bit of snow...but nothing exceptional, The parts of Europe which have had the exceptional conditions are mostly in the East and South-East (roughly speaking a band from Ukraine down to Greece and Turkey). This is because an unusually strong anti-cyclone centred over Finland (central pressure 1060 mb) has driven Arctic air a long way south on its eastern flank.

Received an email today from a friend who lives in a village near the New Forest in Southern England. As you probably know, there are ponies, cattle and horses that roam freely in the New Forest.

She said they had snow and ice there and that some idiots in local government decided to SALT the roadways through the New Forest, instead of laying down grit. Now they have massive vehicle backups on the roads because the animals are all over the roads to lick the salt! ....lol

The overuse of road salt here is baffling. It’s triggered solely by temperature - which means salt is spread totally unnecessarily when, as in the last few days here in England, we’ve had sharp frost but dry air and bone-dry roads, without the slightest risk of ice. The ice risk only arrives today, with a warm front coming in from the west with wet snow followed by rain which will then freeze overnight tonight.

Glad I made it to EUrope before the ice shelves move in..

Talk about a ruinous event that will be..

Snow in Roma? What a sight. I’d gladly weather a topside ride on a tour bus.. some great shots.

snow on the Acropolis next? who knows what else is in the forecast?
