In a move that was decried by the U.S., France, and Arab countries, Russia and China on Saturday vetoed a U.S.-backed proposal at the UN Security Council to condemn Syrian leader Bashar al-Assed for violence against Syrian citizens. The resolution that had demanded that Assad resign was backed by the Arab League, and the League on Saturday night called on Arab countries to shut down their embassies and consulates in Syria, and remove Syrian ambassadors from their countries. U.S. Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice said that Washington was "disgusted" by the vetoes.
The vetoes followed a particularly bloody night in Syria, as Assad-controlled forces opened fire on crowds in the city of Homs, killing over 400 people. Human rights groups said over the weekend that some 7,000 people had been killed in Syria since March 2011, when the uprising against Assad began.
In response to that attack, U.S. President Barack H. Obama issued a scathing condemnation of Assad and his regime. “Assad must halt his campaign of killing and crimes against his own people now,” the statement said. “He must step aside and allow a democratic transition to proceed immediately. The international community must work to protect the Syrian people from this abhorrent brutality.”
The veto was slammed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said that it had been “difficult to close the gaps” with Russia and China. Visibly angry, U.S. ambassador to the UN Susan Rice went further, saying that the U.S. was “disgusted” with the vetoes. “The Security Council has been held hostage for months by two member states, at least one of which is still supplying Syria with weapons,” she said at the Council meeting after the vote. .....

Unless we want to see Syria go the way of Libya and Egypt, we should support Assad.
In this case, the MB would be an improvement, because that would cause a rip in the Syrian/Lebanese/Iranian blanket. MB is Sunni and has no tolerance for Allawites and Shiites. Assad really must go.
But Bush went ahead without the blessings of the international muckety-muckery. Obama will remain paralyzed like a good little boy.

I doubt it. IMHO, a Syrian/Libyan/Egyptian MB axis would be more dangerous than the Lebanon/Syria/Iran blanket.

There already was once a Syrian/Egyptian axis. It fell apart. Not being contiguous will do that, along with losing a war to some Jooos! Blankets are more dangerous.
Even under Clinton, I trusted the White House in almost all such disputes, and under Carter I assumed (perhaps foolishly) that they were trying. Today, I trust Putin and Hu to look after America’s interests a whole lot more than I trust the Occupant of our White House. In general, I assume that any position taken by this administration is more likely than not harmful to the United States as a free and independent country.
Whatever happened to our affirmative action Ambassador to the UN, Susan Rice?
She has been quiet and out of the spotlight since the White House became the White hut - quite unlike the times when Bolton was the UN representative.
Now, it seems that Cankles is onstage whenever a UN-related event is in the news.

But you assume only in the particular, rather than on the premise. Why must the US wait on the UNSC just to say that Syria is bad. Does Russia and China vetoing the resolution mean that Syria is good? The Arab League and especially Tunisia aren’t so hampered. They’re even cutting off diplomatic relations. Is BHO cutting off diplomatic relations with Syria? Did we ever have any? Is he sanctioning Syria? Is he helping the rebels? All he does is ask the UNSC to say that Syria is bad. Phooey.

Personally, I’m pretty sick of dumping bad governments for worse governments. There are still 2,000,000 Christians in Syria. They will marched to the ovens if the bearded ones take over. While I don’t like the Assad clan, I have a bigger problem with the bunch sympathizing with Iran that is trying to take over.
Can we just leave the U.N. already? Then again, I could not give two sh*ts what happens to the “Syrian opposition”. It is like trying to root for the Nazi SS vs. the Brown shirts.

It is only half true.
In fact Saudis are who mostly supporting global jihad and muslim brotherhood who are in charge over uprising are their dog in this fight.
Look what happens in Egypt and Lybia right now, under MB they have constant degradation of civilization itself. Not only they are killing Christians and burning libraries which was predictable, in Egypt they even issued fetwa prohibiting selling and driving Chevrolet, guess why? Just look at Chevy symbol, it looks like a cross to them.
Assad government with all it’s cons are secular people who recognize some liberties and sane enough to be a part of some agreements. They aren’t killing minorities for their religion.
Dictators like this are ideal ME leaders. You won’t get any better under process under way now.
There are numerous way to put secular dictators in line and no way to contain nutjob jihadies.
Just look at A-stan under Taliban. What kind of sanctions could you use on that regime?

The Saudis have lost in Lebanon, although that may change; they lost in Iraq, though I don’t think that’s over yet either. They’ve even lost in Afghanistan; their opponent in the struggle for control is Iran, its proxies, and some bit players, one of which is the Muslim Brotherhood, which is independent (even the individual national chapters are; they are opportunistic feeders as far as getting financing in exchange for influence or alliance).
The Saudi dynasty fears internal challenges to its power, and there have been a number of them, including at least two serious ones over the past fifty years; their response time to serious internal threats has been poor. The power structure bears a superficial resemblance to the early Kingdom of Israel, when Saul struggled with the prophet Samuel; the Wahhab leadership is independent of the dynasty, and have more leverage the more serious the threat is to the regime. Also, after the OPEC embargo, the vast oil fortunes accumulated in a service class (like the bin Laden family, or Yamani, a commoner who used to be oil minister, and wound up “Sheik Yamani”) which privately finances little wars like Afghanistan (against the Soviet occupation), jihad around the world (via al Qaeda and a number of smaller or short-lived cells), hijackings, murders, and other fun and games, entirely outside regime control.
The groups fighting Assad include Christians and Druze, as well as Sunni Moslems (even some Shia; finding some minor sects like Sufists in the mix wouldn’t be surprising). This erroneous “Syrian Christians are better off under Assad” idea comes up once in a while, and it’s simply not true. As with all dictators, the Assad dynasty has been an equal opportunity oppressor.
Well US kept India out of the permanent security council and not have the veto power. Well I hope US is having fun with Russian and Chinese veto power.
Sadly, I agree 100% The Russians and Chinese have the sense to see that more chaos in the middle east is in no one's interest at this point. Teenagers playing online strategy games make more sensible decisions than Obama and co.,
When Assad is gone in Syria the instability will start to spread to Saudi Arabia and the gulf states.
If Israel left, they’d have nobody left to make angry chimp noises at. Surely not Syria.
