The battle is joined on religious liberty
The Commercial Appeal ^ | February 4, 2012 | Kathleen Parker

Two of the top news stories this past week have revolved around reproductive rights, though both raise far more troubling issues than a woman's right to contraception or abortion.

The more compelling questions concern a person's or an institution's freedom of conscience and the right to act upon one's moral beliefs without fear of intimidation and/or government coercion.

Both cases -- one involving the Catholic Church and the other, Susan G. Komen for the Cure -- deal with the ongoing conflict between the pro-life and pro-choice camps. And both are exposing the dangerous extent to which some pro-choice advocates, including the president of the United States, are willing to tread on fundamental freedoms in order to impose and secure ideological purity. . . .

On a far more serious level, Catholic institutions are under siege by the federal government vis-à-vis the Affordable Care Act, which requires nearly all employers to provide health insurance that covers contraception, including in some cases abortifacient drugs. The Obama administration insists these offerings are part of women's health and should be made easily available; Catholics, both liberal and conservative, feel these requirements are the edge of the wedge.

Essentially, the new law forces them to either forfeit their most fundamental beliefs or face prohibitive penalties -- or close hospitals, schools and other charities, with catastrophic consequences for millions who depend them. For perspective, one in six patients in the U.S. is cared for in a Catholic hospital.

The Obama administration has given Catholics a year to adapt to the new rule, which is a laughably obtuse approach. The Catholic Church is a 2,000-year-old institution that has faced more severe persecutions than a government mandate to provide funding for morning-after pills. But this politically inept and morally fungible step does reveal utter disregard for religious liberty.

I spke to my neighbor about his last week and she said it wasn’t Obama’s fault. I saw her in Church last Sunday and the Priest spoke on this situation. It went right over her head.Either some Catholics don’t listen or they don’t care. The democrat party has become their religion as it has with Nancy Pelosi who stands with Obama against the Church.

The Church itself is not innocent.

They stood for the health care mandate and Obama care, but when it bit them in the ass they whine and cry. Many Catholics voted for Obama even though they knew of Jeremiah Wright and his bigotry, racial hatred, and anti-American rants, they knew Obama sat in his Church for 20 years and listened to his crap, and believed it. Yet they voted for him.

Many of us have sat stunned while Catholics such as Biden , Pelosi, and others have voted against Church policies by voting for abortion and watched as a Cardianl put Ted Kennedy in the ground. A murderer, drunk, and pro-abortion so called Catholic. The upper ranked clergy couldn’t wait to be there to be seen burying this trash. We wondered why they didn’t excommunicate these people ,but played politics with them.

Now Obama has givent the Catholics a year to think this over. Just happens that the year ends after the election.
Pretty obvious isn’t it?

My priest said today that we must fight. He received a standing ovation.

Obama and his fascist friends have awakened a sleeping giant.

Obama hates Christainity .
He belonged to a Black revolutionary sect that aligns itself with
Marxist Muslim agenda .

Doesn’t anyone recall when this radical did not want to have a
Christmas tree or celebrate Christmas at the white house in 2009 and the Dem party aides stepped in and told them to do it !
On Christmas day these radicals went to the gym
and did not even e change presents with their kids !
It was reported in the Wash Compost !

Our priest said the same thing. I know that he is not a fan of Obamas from having attending right to life meetings with him. Then again, I don’t really think anyone in our parish is either. On the way home from Mass this morning, I explained to my 13 year old daughter (who had just finished serving her second Mass) what it was all about. For the life of her, she can’t figure out why anyone voted for Obama. Smart girl ;)

IIRC, the US Conference of Catholic Bishops stated they would close Catholic hospitals if they were forced by the government to perform abortions. This is just a step in that direction, for Obama and his Administration to see just how much they can get away with. It will be up to some future Obamesque Administration to take it the next step.

Ironically, were that to come to pass now, Georgetown Hospital would be closed. It is the closest hospital to where the Obama children attend school and where they would be taken in an emergency. Shame if there were no G’town Hospital there to save his kid’s life.

This recent speech by Newt addresses the issue:

Newt Gingrich Slams Mitt Romney as “Fundamentally Dishonest” in Nevada Press Conference; Says He Can be Frontrunner Again by the April 3 Texas Primary – Complete Video 2/4/12

At 9:38 minutes in the video he makes this statement:

Newt Gingrich: “The Obama administration has declared war on religious freedom in this country”

Newt is correct.

The situation is very good now: scary, but energizing, bracing. Born-to-be-cautious Bishops are saying words like “civil disobedience”. Pink-faced usually-smiling white-thatched Irish-surnamed gentlemen are searching their closets for their Knights of Columbus swords.

My only fear is that Obama will realize his tactical error and offer them a way to finesse it. The upper clergy will grab for a compromise the way drowning men grab for the nearest flotation device.

One can’t hope for evil. But I *almost* hope Obama gets his Herod up and says “NO compromise.” Our bishops, our priests, our Catholic selves need to face the Moment of Decision now, rather than wait until we’ve finessed so much we’ve forgotten how to fight.

Obama has usurped a number of powers not delegated to him and Americans have done nothing. Even if he is voted out of office next year - and it doesn’t look like that will happen - the next President will keep those powers and expand them. No government (or tyrant) has ever given up power without a fight... EVER! This is going to require a whole lot more than voting to reverse. As for writing to a congresscritter — don’t waste the postage, buy bullets.
