A player drafted by a team does not have to play for that team. I assume >90% of players drafted are ecstatic that they have been drafted and couldn't care less who the team was. But there have been players who have been drafted and refused to show up to Summer camp seeking a larger signing bonus. A player can ignore the team that drafted him, sit out a year, and then become a free agent. I remember outstanding players in the past who let it be known they would not play for a certain team who had a high draft pick and that team would affect a trade for draft picks with another team. On Draft Day you commonly hear about teams trading up or down to guarantee a player goes to a certain team.
I can only repeat what I have said previously, if you have a resume great enough on draft day you can attempt to dictate your own terms. It is the nature of the beast that the NFL has created.
One last thing. The players you focus on, Elway and Eli Manning certainly have proved their elite status post draft. Elway's heroics are legendary and Manning now is a 2X Super Bowl winner and a 2X Super Bowl MVP. Both have proved their worth.
The comment was about SEC option quarterbacks ...
BOTH Mannings played in the SEC, as drop-back quarterbacks - Peyton at Tennessee and Eli at Ole' Miss ...
The reason Giants won the Super Bowl. And no hand was in his face to make him drop it. Brady was right on the money and the receiver dropped that he could catch in his sleep.
“NBC commentator Cris Collinsworth said Welker makes that catch “100 times out of 100.” I’d argue that 99 out of 100 would’ve been more accurate.
The Giants went ahead with a touchdown on the ensuing drive, and it would prove to be the last score of the game. 21-17 Giants was your final.
According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, Welker’s having a tough time dealing with it. “It’s one I’ll have to live with,” he said as he fought back tears.
The Patriots did have a chance to come back after the drop and the Giants touchdown. They took possession on their own 20 yard-line with :57 to play, but again, drops buried them. Deion Branch dropped a ball on first down, Aaron Hernandez dropped one on second, and the Patriots were behind the eight-ball. They did get close to midfield for a Hail Mary attempt, but it was a pipe dream that wasn’t meant to be.
Of all things, the Pats were done in by a drop by Wes Welker. He was targeted eight times on the day, and caught seven balls. That’s the one he missed. He’s made a career out of having terrific hands and coming up with big-time catches in traffic. Not that this catch would’ve been the easiest one in the world, but it’s one you can usually depend on Welker to make. If you could pick any receiver in the world to make that catch, Welker wouldn’t be far down your list”
Not a good Super Bowl match-up.
I would have preferred the Ravens, Texans, or Steelers from the AFC and Packers, Saints, and 49ers at least from the NFC.
Since I’m from Pittsburgh, I’ll make some obnoxious comments in favor of Pittsburgh qbs:
Montana > Brady as a plain old winner
Namath > Eli as lucky champion that plays in NY
Marino > Peyton statistically for his time
I think about some of the great players of the 50s and 60s and they must be absolutely aghast at what the game has become. Especially the amount of money that is tossed around. These kids that celebrate a big play when their team is down by 20 point are a disgrace. Yeah, you are so special that your team is losing. Its less about the team and more about the individual.
I taped the game in the hope that the Giants would lose. Then I could have sat back in leisure as I watched the ever so slightly less hated Pats do it to them. Oh, well. Instead I will watch last years SB between the Packers and Steelers!
I agree totally with the penalty. However, the NFL seems to be totally embracing the whole “gangsta” mentality.
And the pink shoes this year made my head hurt. Its a good cause stopping Breast Cancer but could you see someone like Mean Joe Green or Jack Lambert or Randy White wearing pink? LOL. Or Dan Dierdorf or Mike Dikta?
I guess we should just go and watch NFL Films and remember the Good Old Days.
I missed the palm trees Friday night when I was downtown in this MESS!!
We were just getting ready to park (after taking 45 minutes to go 3 blocks!)
Lmao I legitimately laughed at this
Make some real $$$$$$$$
You saw it here!!!
Hope you didnt put the mortgage on either one of those!
Joe Biden is calling San Fransisco right now to congratulate their Mayor.
This deserved more love. Best laugh on the thread!
Overall it was an exciting game from start to finish.
1st. Congrats to the Giants for winning the SB.
2nd. Why there was the call for good sportmanship on the part of some posters here is because just because it two pro football teams is because good sportmanship must be practiced by fans be it pro teams or kids football, and that extends to championship games. I make no apologies for this. NONE.
It was. LOL.
Q. What do you call a Patriots fan with a bottle of champagne?
A. A waiter.
Got a Patriots fan in your life? Sic 'em. (Lots of John 'why the long face' Kerry types around New England this morning...)
Makes no bit of difference, both NY and NE is FULL of liberals!
One difference...the New England liberals LOST!!! It’s a beautiful morning in America!
With the sun coming up, it is going to be a beautiful day, with a very mild winter which has been very kind to northeasters indeed. :)
Enjoy your day...I KNOW I will...
Me too! Win or lose, this is BEAUTIFUL DAY! :)=^..^=
Plus I look forward again to college basketball games again and pitchers and catchers reporting in the next few weeks. :)=^..^=
I thought the same thing.
Congrats to the Super Bowl Champion Giants.
And to the Cheatriots, Tommy Cry-Brady and Belicheat, thanks for the laughs for choking to the underdog in the Big One yet again.
LOL. And what a a class act, blaming Tommy Bridgit's-Brady-Daddy's teammates for the loss. Brady's Wife, Gisele Curses After Pats Loss .
Cry me a river in your Mao bikini.
Hi. I’m here but not nearly as much as before. Working way, way too many hours to survive the Obamaconomy.
Watching Tom Coughlin with his hat over his heart, singing the Star Spangled Banner before the kickoff, just gave me goosebumps. Then what a great game! The Giants really deserved the win, it was awesome! Certainly out-classed the patriots by a great deal more than the point spread.
Posh. Piffle. Balderdash. NY didn’t give you Hillary. Illinois via Arkansas gave Hillary to all of us. We were just trying to give her back. Although it seems she forgot to take that randy billy goat Bill with her when she went back to D.C. Anyway, that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.
Obviously you have never played the game. The pass Manning threw on the sideline fade at the end of the game was perfect. The pass Brady threw to Welker was 2 feet behind hin and 3 feet high. When a quarterback throws a pass like that to a receiver it is generally because he doesn’t like him because those kinds of passes end careers. Eli 2, Brady 0.
Great post in #926, Lucky9teen. I hope you're right! :-)
Brady 5 Super Bowls, 3 Super Bowl wins.
Eli 2 Super Bowls, 2 Super Bowl wins.
I’m not sure either - I guess I should go read whatever’s on Wikipedia’s ST page. They did several albums I liked, no doubt.
If you like music from that era, see what you think of these (old artist, new material)
(He’s not a great singer, but he is a great writer. And that slide guitar (played by his understudy) - how sweet is that?? It’s stuck in my mind and I can’t get it out!!)
(great message by an old rocker who turned to Christ)
I got my ST albums confused. The one that I have and fell in love with is ‘Brother Where You Bound’. Not played like their earlier stuff (put out in 1985) but it is an awesome album. I like all of their work but Brother where you bound is different but the best (It’s after a change in band personnel too).
Thanks for the links! I’ll be listening.
If you have time later in the evening, check this out.
I’ll be listening to the links you sent this evening as well (on dial up here :O ) lol Doesn’t load too well when I’m surfing.
Well, finally getting back to this! (And very OT, but I suspect almost no-one is still following this thread.)
BWYB is great stuff! Appropriate too! Too bad THAT was not played at the Super Bowl. “Dedicated to our President...”
I should try to find a copy of the 1985 release (better recording in some ways):
P.S. The DR site is clean at present, but the last time I was there, “justice for audio” (a link on the DR site) had been hit by some sort of malware. :-(
I don’t know if you’ll see this (maybe I should just PM you), but I wanted to “publicly” thank you for your mention of Supertramp’s BWYB — I only had it on vinyl until your post, and your post about it prompted me to A) Check the Dynamic Range Database for a potentially better than average release on CD; B) Having found a well rated German release on the DR database, I looked for that release on eBay and was able to snag it.
On a really good hi-fi system - oh, my goodness!! This is an incredibly good recording, which just brings out the musicianship all the more. “Brother” smokes most modern pop music so badly that I don’t even know how to describe the difference. (Sorry, Adele fans.) Maybe saying that it’s like comparing a powerful thunderstorm to a mewing kitten covers part of it, except that BTWB’s quieter and delicate sections are terrific too.
It’s also pretty interesting how BTWB’s lyrics, originally written for a much different political season, still strike a chord, though not in exactly the same way the band originally had in mind!
Anyway, I’ve been enjoying the heck out of my new copy of Brother Where You Bound, so, thanks again for bringing it up! :-)
Hey..what a great post. Thanks! I read it and you know what? I could (can) hear that song, each chord, the footsteps all of it. Of course it’s not ‘quite the same’ as playing it but for now it will have to do as it is late, I’ve lost an hour now because of the stinking time change, but wanted to wind down and check FR out before heading in.
Anyway, as one former colleague used to say: well darlin’ thank you for thanking me... :)
Take care my FRiend.
