NJ Robber Dies After Trying to Steal Phone from Former HS Wrestler
NBC New York ^ | Sunday, Feb 5, 2012 | Brian Thompson

Posted on 02/05/2012 2:48:24 PM PST by nickcarraway

A Newark man died after a tussle with a former high school wrestler he tried to rob early Saturday, NBC New York has learned.

Law-enforcement sources told NBC New York that 30-year-old Gian Davis approached two men near Bloomfield Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. and asked for change.

When the men said "no," he then asked to borrow a cell phone, grabbed it and tried to run off with it, sources said.

One of the men lunged to get the phone back and Davis put him in a headlock, according to sources. Then, sources say the other man, a former high school wrestler, pulled Davis off his friend and put the would-be robber in a headlock.

It was strong enough that Davis apparently choked to death, sources familiar with the investigation said.

A source said the two men called police and then stayed on the scene until authorities arrived. Davis was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

Tom Fennelly, chief assistant Essex County prosecutor, would only confirm that an investigation is ongoing.

No charges have been filed against the former wrestler or his friend. Their names have not been released.

Fennelly said they are cooperating with the investigation.

Davis had prior arrests for aggravated assault and theft. He was released from his last stint in jail on July 22.

...I am not sure that the victim will not face legal charges for using excessive force. p> Excessive force, LOL.

If a cop, with all his training, fears for his life, or even just his safety, he can shoot the dog, taze the perp repeatedly, call for backup, have the backup help him beat the crap out of the perp, and then they can all unload 50 rounds into the perp - and they all get an administrative leave, while the DA determines they did no wrong because they feared for their lives and/or safety.

If a civilian, with no training, is attacked by a violent criminal and uses one two many bullets, or the criminal gets injured while the victim is trying to protect his life or safety, the civilian victim is either arrested for excessive force, or sued into oblivion for excessive force.

What a world.

Like Ted Nugent once said.... I’d rather have the bad guy be dead.

Yeah, and the wrestler probably put him in just such a hold, not a “headlock”. I don’t know a wrestler worth his salt who would EVER use a headlock. First, it’s clumsy, ineffective....oh, and illegal in wrestling. It also leaves one HIGHLY vulnerable; your “victim’s” arms and legs are completely free to wail on you....or in wrestling, even if it was legal, the guy would simply pick you up and slam you down as you try to hold onto his neck/head. Stupid.

No, this guy, rightfully so, I guarantee you put him in a proper choke from behind: one arm across the throat, that hand grasping his other bicep; the other arm....hand to the back of the head pushing forward....all the while flexing the bicep of the arm across the throat.

The result is a devastating “scissoring” type action that will incapacitate ANYone (and a personal favorite, I must admit). Takes practice, but a wrestler can get behind you in the blink of an eye and engage that hold....and it’s all over.

Of course, we know nothing about the guy. but the “ wrestler either “overestimated the strength of the would- be robber, or underestimated his own, or just got too excited. Moral of the story: be careful who you mess with. I know of a case where a big-guy picked on a former professional featherweight fighter and ended up in the hospital.

I’m thinking the perp was lucky. He probably died quickly.
He could have suffered greatly had the wrestler used the claw!

Just before the robbery attempt, the suspect may have said to himself: “I’m gonna get me a cell phone or die trying.”

I should hope he doesn’t. It would be a travesty but since when do the PC police care about the sensibilities of us.

Too bad for the robber, but live by the sword, die by the sword.

To say nothing of the fact a headlock is not eficient in a life or death circumstance, if ever. It is a great way for an unsophisticated user to get their nose pushed up into their skull if used on the wrong guy.

I wonder if he had a license for that headlock? They need to outlaw headlocks. You got too many people out there putting headlocks on people..somethings gotta be done.

It’s pretty clear from watching choke holds applied in MMA that unconsciousness can come very, very quickly.

More surprising is how difficult to tell if someone is out. It looks tough enough just for an experienced referee, for the person applying the hold, it must be almost impossible to be sure.

In a related story Gian’s Mom sobbed to reporters that her son did not deserve to die. He was a good boy and had been turning his life around.

Right, and these kids should have known all of this before-hand or arrived at these conclusions during a fight with someone that probably wasn’t observing H.S. wrestling club rules. These kinds of critiques about how good or bad these kids were at wrestling are idiotic. It wasn’t a wrestling match, it was personal self-defense.
