Japan: Temperature rises at Fukushima No.2 reactor

Temperature rises at Fukushima No.2 reactor

The operator of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant says the temperature in the No.2 reactor remains high despite the injection of additional water.

A thermometer at the bottom of the reactor showed 73.3 degrees Celsius on Monday morning. It was around 45 degrees on January 27th and 71.7 degrees at 4 PM on Sunday.

Tokyo Electric Power Company began injecting 10.6 tons of water per hour from around 1:30 AM on Monday. That's one ton more per hour than before.

The utility says 2 other thermometers placed at the bottom of the reactor have been giving readings of about 44 degrees.

It says the flow of water in the reactor may have changed after plumbing work, causing difficulties in cooling the nuclear fuel.

In December last year, the government and TEPCO declared the 3 reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant had been successfully put into a state of cold shutdown as their temperatures had fallen below 100 degrees. But the situation inside the reactors remains unknown.

TEPCO says the regulations set after the state of cold shutdown was achieved require the utility to keep temperatures inside the reactors below 80 degrees. So it says the No.2 reactor is still in the state of cold shutdown.

Ten tons per hour, it isn’t like filling your bath tub.
Say, just where is it all going......anyway?

The sun is way hotter than that so why is everyone getting so worked up about three nuclear reactors. I want a nuclear power plant next door to my house because I know that what happened in Japan could never happen anywhere else and besides 71.7 degrees would be nice during the winter instead of snow and cold.

So it says the No.2 reactor is still in the state of cold shutdown.

Well, I sure it's reassuring to the folks that TEPCO is technically correct.

10 tons of water, 10 tons of hazardous waster to deal with.

2500 gallons and hour. A fire truck and pump 1500 a minute.

The utility says 2 other thermometers placed at the bottom of the reactor have been giving readings of about 44 degrees.

Hmmm. If the other 2 thermometers are near the same location in the core as the indicating sensor and both of the 2 thermometers read the same, does that sound all that frightening? Indicator error? Sensor breakdown?

Would you rather have a coal power plant next door?

10 tons of water is just under 2400 gallons

TEPCO just announced in their nightly briefing that they will be injecting 960 KG of Boric Acid into reactor number 2. The gas tests showed very little Xenon gas (XE135), but they are also going to increase water injection by 3 tons.

In the meantime Number 4 is smoking like a chimney tonight. Really gets going at about 44 seconds on this video (2/6/2012 at about 18:15:08 JST).

Just hoping they can hold the place together for 4 more weeks myself. Does not look good right now.

The info on #2 was reported at the link below by a Japanese exile translating the meeting. Sometimes the translation into English is not done very well.

Tepco is going to inject boric acid

Ten tons per hour, it isn’t like filling your bath tub.

Actually it's not far off. 10 tons per hour is 2500 gallons per hour which is 41 gallons per minute. A low flow shower head uses 2.2 gallons per minute so that means they are using the output of 18 low flow shower heads. It's not a whole lot of water.

“Say, just where is it all going...…anyway?”

It’s being continually filtered and reused.
