Hawaii's legislature is weighing an unprecedented proposal to curb the privacy of Aloha State residents: requiring Internet providers to keep track of every Web site their customers visit.

Its House of Representatives has scheduled a hearing this morning on a new bill (PDF) requiring the creation of virtual dossiers on state residents. The measure, H.B. 2288, says "Internet destination history information" and "subscriber's information" such as name and address must be saved for two years.

H.B. 2288, which was introduced Friday, says the dossiers must include a list of Internet Protocol addresses and domain names visited. Democratic Rep. John Mizuno of Oahu is the lead sponsor; Mizuno also introduced H.B. 2287, a computer crime bill, at the same time last week.

An unconscionable invasion, and, clearly a violation of Constitutional prohibitions against illegal searches, IMO.
But, as always, I’ll defer to the fine legal minds here on FR.

We are heading toward an abyss that only the strong and prepared will manage to traverse and survive...

So does google, your ISP, and pretty much any hack who manages to get spyware on your machine.

This following so close on the heals of Hawaii’s vexatious requestor bill for anyone requesting public records about their boy wonder. Can’t have someone posting the REAL bc or letting out the big state secret.

When did Hawaii secede and become part of the PRC?

If they’re going to log websites visited, surely they will follow with tracking who you call, who you vist, where you pray, what you buy, etc.

I don’t use google. I use IZQ. No cookies, no storing of you IP. Can they still track you if you’re using this for searches?

To me, this is just plain weird, boardering on bizarro. What in the world would they do with all that data? Who’s going to have the miserable job of going through that data and how many people would they have to hire to sift through all of it?

Yes, and they can send a hefty bill to Hussein and us for keeping his secrets safe.

Yes, exactly. And what business is it of theirs? What is wrong with these people?

If we get through reforming our governments with out putting anyone’s head on a pike I’ll be pleasantly surprised.

What in the world would they do with all that data? Who’s going to have the miserable job of going through that data and how many people would they have to hire to sift through all of it?

Computers have become so powerful that it would be relatively easy to set up a search program to sift for keywords within huge masses of data. They only need to use various negative phrases about their Messiah, for instance, or words like "Tea Party" or pro-Life" to get billions of hits. Then, sift again for other sets of words, and so on until they have developed their enemies list that will be scanned frequently. With supercomputing, millions of users can all be scanned in minutes.

Pretty soon you will have to sign out every time you leave your home. And you will have to sign in every time you reach a destination. Digitally over the internet of course.

In a related story, every time I go to a store with computers up for internet access, I give Free Republic a “hit”, and then leave it up on the screen. :)
