Nearly 90 city employees were suspended Monday and face potential firing and prosecution for receiving unemployment benefits while holding their city jobs, District officials said.

In addition, about 40 former city workers cashed unemployment checks they were not entitled to and also face sanctions. In all, the city estimates it has paid out as much as $800,000 in unemployment benefits to working city employees since 2009.

Employees accused of wrongdoing worked in various arms of the District government, including the public schools and the D.C. Council staff, according to a high-ranking official to Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D) who was not allowed to speak publicly on the investigation. Some of the employees, Mallory said, received $20,000 or more; others received only a few hundred dollars.

I live in the region...over in Virginia. The problem with the DC city employees is that they’ve got a hire-DC mentality....so they hire marginal employees, even as managers, and you end up with a staff which isn’t that capable. They will go after the $800k and probably waste over $5 million in lawyer/court fees....and most of the people involved who owed less than $2k...will just pay it back to avoid any issues. The folks with over $20k? I imagine most are not in a position to pay it back.

If you had to pick a city in America that requires constant oversight...this would be my number one choice. They need a full-time staff of fifty people looking over their business every single day.

How could this happen in the most ethical, honest, and wonderful Democrat-controlled bastion on the Potomac? I am shocked . . . shocked!!

And so, having expressed moral outrage through an official spokesman to the WaPo, Mayor Gray (D-DC) quietly moves to bury and dismiss the charges.

Nothing to see here, folks. This is just more honest Donkey government at work, so move along. [I think I'm going to vomit.]

I thought they were under the oversight of Congress. That’s why they don’t get to vote. Or, has that changed?

This is what always happens in the WDC area: Corrupt government employee musical chairs. Corrupt government employees get caught. Corrupt government employees get paid administrative leave. Corrupt government employees fade out of the news. Only a few corrupt government employees make any restitution or are fired. Many corrupt government employees are allowed to retire. Corrupt government employees get other government positions. Corrupt government employees are replaced by more corrupt government employees. Nothing new here...move along. (By the way, get to work, stop complaining and...keep paying your taxes to support this vile corruption)

(Lawyer) 'My clients plead Not Guilty yer Honor. After all Judge, is working for the city of DC like really working or having a job with anything to do? So technically they were 'unemployed' yer Honor.'

(Judge) 'I concur. Not Guilty. Case dismissed. Your clients are free to go.'

They get fired for collecting unemployment checks, now they will collect unemployment checks again.

LMAO. DC Government what a joke.

DC is the corruption of Zimbabwe with a check coming in from the feds.

Jeez, you're right. Until they go to court and get convicted, if it evens goes that far, they're eligible for unemployment if they get fired (though Firing makes it more difficult to collect vs being Laid Off).

In any case, that is a joke. A sick one, but it's on us since we fund DC.
