Catholic leaders upped the ante Monday, threatening to challenge the Obama administration over a provision of the new health care law that would require all employers, including religious institutions, to pay for birth control.
As CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer reports, it could affect the presidential elections.
Catholic leaders are furious and determined to harness the voting power of the nation’s 70 million Catholic voters to stop a provision of President Barack Obama’s new heath car reform bill that will force Catholic schools, hospitals and charities to buy birth control pills, abortion-producing drugs and sterilization coverage for their employees.
“Never before, unprecedented in American history, for the federal government to line up against the Roman Catholic Church,” said Catholic League head Bill Donohue.
Already Archbishop Timothy Dolan has spoken out against the law and priests around the country have mobilized, reading letters from the pulpit. Donohue said Catholic officials will stop at nothing to put a stop to it.
“This is going to be fought out with lawsuits, with court decisions, and, dare I say it, maybe even in the streets,” Donohue said.
But pro-choice groups said they will fight the church and fight for the right of employees of Catholic institutions to have birth control and other services paid for.
“The Catholic hierarchy seems to be playing a cynical game of chicken and they don’t seem to care that the health and well being of millions of American woman are what’s at stake here,” National Abortion Rights Action League President Andrea Miller said.

He probably isn't that familiar with American history and doesn't know how we got government schooling.
Still, if Catholics would follow their religion and its conscience you'd not see another Democrat elected this century.
This Protestant will be standing in full support of the Catholic church on this one.
Catholics and other religious leaders must realize that this President can not be trusted and even if he changes course he will continue his war on religion once elected.
The Catholic Church hasn’t been “informing consciences” for decades. The obvious results are divorce rates, Mass attendance, lower birth rates, etc.
They’ve so minimized the concept of Hell it will be difficult to resurrect true Catholicism for this fight.

I don’t get it. Is it no longer possible to buy condoms and other forms of birth control? Oh! This is about making OTHER people pay for one’s condoms, including people who have religious objections to birth control itself. Now I get it.
As far as that goes, I don’t know why religious objections are the main point of contention. The REAL problem is people who think they have a right to force everyone else to pay for whatever they want and use the federal government as a tool to browbeat their fellow citizens. Religious objections, although important, are not the larger issue which is tyranny!

All Christians should. Yesterday I heard a radio report that Imams in Texas had at last Friday’s call to prayer called for civil disobedience over forced indoctrination of homosexuality in schools. When was the last time your pastor or priest demanded you stand up for your religion?
Americans have a fundamental right to conscience. It’s why we’re Americans and big government is an enemy to that and always has been.
Until Catholics and other Christians recognize that you cannot solve the problems of poverty and justice using the tools of Mammon we’ll continue our downward spiral.
Most Catholics lean to the left. The Church teaches health care as a “right”, so in the view of many in the pews Obamacare is a good thing.
While I support the Catholic church in their protest of the mandate, I do have to ask what did they expect? The State views them as a competitor, and as the biggest target.
There is wheat and chaffe in every religion. Recall that Revelations opens with a list of infractions committed by the churches and an asking for them to turn away from their failings.
The Catholic Church seems to be turning ...the question will be what will be left of the pseudo-faithful in the end?
Look forward to the ugly women and "chic" women to start marching in the streets for "Women's Right to Choose", "It's MY body", etc. signage.
(As opposed to the right to choose to act responsibly and morally).
You KNOW it's gonna be 24/7 on the State-Run-Media, with "reproductive Rights" being the buzzword, and AVOIDING the term "Abortion funded by others".
But I understand, protecting Planned Parenthood funding was much more important.

Children aren’t ‘viruses’ that need to be ‘cured’ or elminated.

They’re correct. It is their body, but the baby isn’t their body and there can be no private murders.
True. Those 70 million Catholics keep big city Democrats in power. If they would turn back to their religion and follow its precepts America would be a much better place.
The fact is: Christians are wimps. We’re so compromised that we give up before even trying and Mammon wins every time. America is suffering from Mammonism and the cure is more, not less Christian faith in action.
