American kids denied food stamps in Alabama under immigration law

By Liz Goodwin

Some U.S.-born children with parents who are illegal immigrants have been denied food stamps under Alabama's new immigration law, Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen told Yahoo News on Monday.

Five people have called into the group's Alabama hotline to say they were denied food stamps because they couldn't prove they were legal residents, even though the food stamps are for their children, who are citizens.

Cohen says the civil rights group, which has already filed two lawsuits against Alabama over the law, will most likely bring another suit over the denied food stamps.

The law makes it a felony for a government employee to engage in "business transactions" with illegal immigrants, which some government employees have interpreted very broadly. Illegal immigrants have been told they can't pay their utility bills or even their taxes because it would count as a "transaction" with the government, according to Cohen.

You cannot deny something when they have no right to the same. Go home illegals, mexico will give you food stamps.

Well, cry me a river.

Maybe this will get some focus back onto the government’s ridiculous interpretation of the 14th Amendment which allows for birthright citizenship in this country. How unreal it is for a country to allow any pregnant woman from any part of the world to come here and give birth to her child and that child becomes a citizen of that country automatically, regardless of the mother’s citizenship?

No wonder we can’t get a handle on this illegal invasion! Our so-called “representatives” are either too gutless or too power-hungry to enforce the laws and then we have these businesses who all want cheap labor. To top it off, all these invaders have to do is plop a kid out on American soil and voila! That kid is now an American, entitled to all the benefits America has to offer and ... lookie here! Why, we can’t leave Mommy Dearest out of the loop so we have to hook her up with with American bennies too!

We know 0bama won’t do anything to stop this (as he needs these invaders’ votes) but who in the GOP will do something about this? Can’t believe Romney, though he sounds tough on immigration. Mr. Newt doesn’t believe it’s “humane” to send back these criminals who have been here for 20 years or more. Mr. Paul ... hmph! Give me a break, that guy probably just whines about how it’s our fault because we probably stole the Southwest and Mexico has a legitimate grievance against us. So where does that leave Mr. Santorum?

I’m just getting real fed up with this whole issue. Just when it seems like states try to do something about this, the “Hate America First” crowd comes out of the woodwork to find ways to further the rot in this country.

It is crazy to me that these liberals don’t see their own hypocrisy. One one hand they are so concerned about the rights of children of illegals, but aborting the unborn children of U.S. citizens is an issue they would fight tooth an nail for? How does that make any sense?

"There are plenty of churches, food banks, and other charities who would see that the kids get fed, if it really came down to it."

Bump that!

Good. The law is working as intended. Go to Georgia and mooch off of them. We in Alabama don’t want to feed you or your kids anymore.

Richard Cohen is a lying sack of sh** poverty pimp of the worst kind.

NO children in Alabama - LEGAL OR NOT - receive food stamp. NONE, ZERO, ZIP, ZILCH, NADA!!!!! Their parents receive Food Stamps -- and in these cases their Parents are ILLEGAL and are INELIGIBLE. A person with the IQ of a thumb Tack can understand that -- which shows just how low Richard Cohen's IQ is.

I wholeheartedly agree! There should be a provision that states - If citizenship occurs as a result of breaking the law, then citizenship can be revoked.

I disagree somewhat with the anti “anchor baby” sentiment I see on this forum. My Grandfather was born here but was taken back to Hungary as a baby. As he was a jus soli citizen, he was able to migrate back to this country as a young man and begin working as a blacksmith for the railroads. He worked very hard and was proud to be an American. My Grandmother, also a Hungarian immigrant, was a proud American citizen and wouldn’t let my father and my uncle speak Hungarian because they were American.

The issue is not with jus soli immigration, it has to do with the amount of benefits and the attitude of those who migrate here who have no desire to assimilate to the American culture and work ethic.

I don’t believe you. A single parent with seven kids in Florida doesn’t get that. Quit spreading false information.

Before you call someone a liar; it's usually best to have a clue that YOU have an idea of what you are babbling about ... obviously, you don't.

But, never fear; I'll do the footwork for you, because you are too ignorant to use Google.

Do some math ... Let's start with the Federal mandated SNAP program - which by itself provides a base that is higher than what most families who actually work, have for monthly grocery bills.

Household Maximum Monthly Benefit*
1 $200
2 $367
3 $526
4 $668
5 $793
6 $952
7 $1,052
8 $1,202
Source

Now, let's add the cash card you can get for incidentals, free Health Coverage and Child Care Assistance

Provided by the State

And last, and this is the neatest part ..... College students qualify. So, just because you are going to college and taking out loans - doesn't mean that you can't start a family and get a good jump start on living off the taxpayer teat. Why get a job? Why bother coming here legally? Then we wonder why we are going bankrupt. It's well over $900/month ....

See post #20

It’s actually well over $900 when you figure in Food Stamps, plus the cash card. This doesn’t include the free health care, free child daycare provisions, free mortgage assistance and WIC programs.

If that is not true (and I believe it is) then all they need to do is to feed their spawn cough syrup and then go to SS dept and get them diagnosed with a disability of ADD.

Instant $700 PER CHILD PER MONTH.

Actually, that might be a way around this problem, because (at least public) education is required by law, of US citizen minors, it is not seen by the courts as a parental benefit.

Many schools have long offered free breakfast, as well as lunch, to poor children. The lunch is federal, paid for by the National School Lunch Act of 1946, with the cost of breakfast paid for by the state.

This means the only gaps that exist are for children under the age of five, and for all on weekends. Their illegal alien parents should be able to pick up most of that.

There is an additional twist to this, in the news just a week ago. The state of Arizona is considering a law that would allow its public schools to no longer be a part of the federal school lunch program.

Though it has had very little publicity, this is a public school nuclear weapon, because for decades the federal government has demanded all sorts of things from schools under threat of taking away their school lunch program money.

Over time, this has resulted in huge administrative costs, and burned up huge amounts of student time, to conform to all these federal demands. But if schools choose to kiss off the federal lunch program, they will be freed from tons of federal bureaucracy and save a fortune.

At the same time, they will continue to feed their children, saving more than enough money to do so. But when the feds realize what is going on, they are going to freak out, because this would end their endless interference in the schools.

Instead of being a smart ass, your numbers are correct. I am a TANF/FSET case manager. I was correcting disinformation. I appreciate your research efforts. Btw, these laws need to be revisited.. 48 months is wayyyy too long. It needs to be cut in half for cash recipients.

I’m a smart ass? Please re-read your post ... you called me a liar and told me to shut up.

I simply answered with some FACTS with sources. If you had asked me how I came up with those number, your response would have been far more civil.

If you want civility; act civily. When you call someone a liar - don’t expect a kind and courteous reply.

As a case manager - you SHOULD HAVE KNOWN my numbers were accurate. But, your knee-jerk response was to call me a liar and tell me to shut up. Now, I’m a smart ass?

That’s what the losers do when they time out on tanf benefits. I’ve been home sick for two days. This whole country makes me ill... im tired of supporting shitheads in our society while I work hard and pay taxes. Yes, in bitter...

I can’t recall whether it was just California, but here a family making 15k per year and receiving public assistance has more discretionary income than a family earning 60k without assistance.

We now have a national news story because five people (probably all here illegally) called the Southern Pimp's Law Center?

Despite the screaming headline, it appears the only connection these kids have to America is that their parents invaded the country and popped them out here.

How does that make them Americans more than a cat having kittens in an orange crate makes the kittens oranges?

Good. We need to start that here in GA also. It took me awhile to figure out why I was watching illegals swiping peachcards in the grocery. Than it hit me that they are running down and registering for welfare for their anchor babies. Our new immigration law does not allow illegals to get welfare but thats how they get around it.

Re-read my post. I concurred with the amounts. I was discrediting a prior post. I could write all day about the truths of tanf recipients. You would be amazed at the fraud. Simmer down now...
