American kids denied food stamps in Alabama under immigration law

Some U.S.-born children with parents who are illegal immigrants have been denied food stamps under Alabama's new immigration law, Southern Poverty Law Center President Richard Cohen told Yahoo News on Monday.
Five people have called into the group's Alabama hotline to say they were denied food stamps because they couldn't prove they were legal residents, even though the food stamps are for their children, who are citizens.
Cohen says the civil rights group, which has already filed two lawsuits against Alabama over the law, will most likely bring another suit over the denied food stamps.
The law makes it a felony for a government employee to engage in "business transactions" with illegal immigrants, which some government employees have interpreted very broadly. Illegal immigrants have been told they can't pay their utility bills or even their taxes because it would count as a "transaction" with the government, according to Cohen.

Why cash at all? If mortgage assistance is given, a clothing allowance is given - what is the cash for? So they can go to the movies, buy alcohol? It seems pretty cushy to me - I work, my wife works, and we don't spend this amount of money on our 'fun stuff' - I guess we are fools.
Are unemployed bums entitled to movies and popcorn? Why are we giving them cash? We are paying taxes, we are paying off our debts, we are both working full time jobs and trying to get ahead. Our grocery bill is less than what the bums are spending on SNAP. I've got a generic bread sandwich in the fridge right now, with 1 slice of bologna, 1 slice of Cotta salami and 1 slice of Pepperjack cheese with miricle whip dressing. That's my lunch, same as yesterday, tomorrow and the rest of the week. For breakfast I feasted on a blueberry bagel with blueberry cream cheese. Same as yesterday, tomorrow and the rest of the week. Tonight, I'll have some manwiches and baked beans. My grocery bill is like $250/month for my wife and I. But, when you are working to support bums, who eat better than we do - I guess we just don't know our place. We should just quit being smart Asses, work double-shifts and stfu, right?
I'm just an engineer, making more than the average person - but my expenses in these areas are far below what the bums are getting; and it makes me mad.
The snopes version of the story, of course, tries to nitpick on the details, but the general analysis is basically correct.
Let me fill you in on something. They get the food stamp amounts you stated. They get cash on there ebt card, free child care through Early Learning Coalition, free rent(I’ve seen $1200the a month), free electric, free cell phone, $9.99 internet, gas cards, bus passes, and they are lard asses. Welcome to America!! Makes me want to throw in the towel..
I can easily believe that. When you figure in the amount paid for taxes, mortgage/rent, food and then in many cases free bus fair or car assistance - this sounds fairly reasonable. And it's even more aggregious when you figure in the illegal issues.
Consider, family A and family B - both with 2 kids, both parents working. Family A is legal, family B is illegal. Family A pays taxes on their income - as they are here legally. This income then deducts from the total elgibility for Gov't assistance. Family B, pays NO taxes - thus their income on paper is $0 - thus they qualify for maximum assistance. Then, we wonder why we have an illegal alien issue.
My wife and I don’t spend a THIRD of that a month....

There are way too many people on Food Stamps, period. Legal, illegal, whatever. The program needs to be cut in half. That will get rid of pretty much all illegals and a lot of legal moochers too. Food Stamps is the most abused program in the government. The only criteria to get food stamps is to be lazy.

Indeed they should be given the option of being deported or placed on a work farm until papers are cleared.Law is law not an suggestion.
According to the IRS filings for this "charity" Cohen makes about $340,000.00 a year including benefits. That was in 2009. He made about the same in 2008. They take in about $34,000,000.00 a year.
They have a $22,000,000.00 building. Over $350,000.00 in vehicles, etc. If you look at their 2007 IRS 990 they gave thousands and thousands to numerous schools for "Tolerance Community Education". The big "unpaid" cheese in the organization is Julian Bond.
I have been complaining about these nonprofits here for years. We should not allow such entities to exist where they do not pay taxes unless they feed, house or put clothes on the backs of humans. This entity is a lobbying entity that spends taxpayer subsidized money to sue all sorts of people to satisfy the political desires of the handlers of this "charity". Just a few years ago when I started posting about nonprofit ofganization abuse there were about 500,000 US nonprofits. Today it is over 1,500,000. Many of these groups are in business to enrich their handlers, push a political agenda or to simply compete against or destroy regular corporations. Some, like in the case of the Southern Poverty Law center, and yes, Judicial Watch seem to be nothing more than lawyer support groups.
I'd suggest that whenever you see one of these groups mentioned go to guidestar.org sign up, and look up their financials. The financials can give you an idea what the entity is all about.
The abuse of American nonprofit corporation laws is a huge problem. FYI, in countries like Mexico do you know how many such "charities" that get government subsidy and tax breaks there are. Effectively - ZERO!
We need to seriously re-think how we allow charities to operate in the USA or just do away with corporate taxes period!
I really shouldn’t jump into this argument, but your original post did say that the family was receiving $900 in FOOD STAMPS. Now you say to add in the other benefits which are not FOOD STAMPS. So your numbers were not accurate to what you stated.

I have an awesome idea. Why doesn’t the Southern Poverty Law Center do some actual good and feed those kids instead of using them as props? Then, they should move south of the border and help them change things in their own country so that there would be no need for them to come here illegally. Work on the problem at its root.
Many people on this forum have reported people in the grocery line in front of them with several carts filled with groceries and paying with food stamps. (I refuse to call it by the PC name they came up with to make them feel better about getting welfare)
The carts contained food the taxpayer couldnt’t afford. One poster even reported a welfare recipient trying to pay with food stamps from a couple of other states before finally getting together with the other shopper they were with to come up with the right state and right amount.
Dems are the scourge that are in the process of destroying a great nation. These are ‘their people’.
Sorry Cohen. No matter how you spin it, illegal aliens' kids are not Americans. I don't care what the interpretation of laws has become.
If the insane asylum passed a law asserting that Norwegian Rats arriving as stowaways are also Americans, to me they are still rats.
Survival food.. rice, beans, pasta, soup, flour, and milk. The poor shouldn’t be living high on the hog. They should be getting by, like I am...
