Anonymous releases Oakland officials' personal information

OAKLAND -- The hacker group Anonymous inserted itself into the feud between the Occupy Oakland movement and the city by releasing the personal information of top city officials this morning.

The international cyber-clique gained notoriety last year when it launched a similar move against BART after the agency shut off cell phone service in its tunnels to thwart protesters. It released a statement on its website admonishing the city for its treatment of Occupy demonstrators.

This time, they posted a page displaying personal contact information for Mayor Jean Quan and her husband, City Administrator Deanna Santana, police Chief Howard Jordan, City Attorney Barbara Parker, and all eight City Council members. The format and metadata included in the Anonymous post appear aimed at highlighting that the information was obtained by computer hacking.

One official -- at-large councilmember Rebecca Kaplan -- was spared from intrusion. The site only posted her public office number along with the message: "Thank you for your support and being a true leader in the community."

The group's words for other officials were not as laudatory.

"Anonymous has been watching. Since the inception of Occupy Oakland, We have been actively monitoring your behavior, and exposing the identities and sensitive information of Officers of the Oakland Police Department; as they have continued to act in an unprofessional and violent manner," the website statement read.

The statement goes on to denounce violent tactics used against Occupy protesters, and also criticizes the city for budget cuts that have resulted in school closures and reductions in city services such as libraries.

"The people on this list are supposed to represent the best of what the City of Oakland has to offer. If they are the best, why is there so much trouble within the Police Department, and in the City of Oakland?" the statement says. "We are shocked and disgusted by your behavior. Before you commit atrocities against innocent people again, think twice. You should have expected Us."

City officials could not be immediately reached for comment. Check back later for updates to this story.

The irony is that Mayor Quan is a communist.

Normally, I would be for slapping Anonymous in jail, but since it is the city of Oakland officials, I’d be willing to let this one ride. :)

Have the chickens come home to roost?

What should the mayor say to pacify the “occupiers”?

“Go ahead, I support your effort to destroy personal and public property in violent protest of (not sure who they are protesting). Please vote for me again as we will need to raise taxes to fund the rebuilding of our crappy city.”

When liberals attack, there is no arguing or discussing with them and now liberals are feeling the pressure of stupidity within their own base.

American college students should go on strike! They are being enslaved by the college professors! The college professors shackle them to debt for most of their lives! You want change! See what happens when no college students show up next fall. College students should demand that their tuition be reduced by 75%. University professors can drive Volkswagens instead of BMWs! Free the university students! If university students don’t strike against the universities, then they’re just a bunch of whiny crybabies with lots of mouth but no guts!

Fundamentally, I see no problem with this. Why we would allow Public Servants to HIDE behind a veil of Secrecy is Outright STUPID and can only lead to Tyranny, for they are now Agents of Tyranny. Just look around at what are Public Servants have become. But I also believe that Every Public Servant in America should be from the community he or she works in and should be required to be a Resident in that community, otherwise we end up with Los Angeles, where virtually 90 percent of the City Employees live in Other Cities and a Large portion live in Ventura County. Making them Outsiders to the very Neighborhoods they are supposed to keep the peace in, and by definition CANNOT represent the People they are charged with Protecting. They Are AGents of Tyranny and should be known to ALL

I am wondering what “personal” information they have? Salaries should be in the public record. Their home addresses shouldn’t be that hard to find. What stuff could they publish that might be dangerous or embarrassing.

Sounds like Ms. Kaplan must be a commie par excellence ...

“Every Public Servant in America....”

Should be “service” i.e...a temporary “sabbatical” from a real career to help run the civic functions required in the community..for 2-3 years..after which they can go out and live in the real world again...with the consequences of their decision-making...

Does Anonymous take requests? Like maybe the home addresses of some of the 9th Circuit Court justices?

Government SHOULD fear the people. Instead, the government feels it should threaten the people and keep them in fear for control purposes. So, we now have a government that is out of control.
