Republican presidential contender Rep. Ron Paul (Texas) said Monday that the sanctions put in place against Iran are "terrible" for the United States and its allies.
"I voted against them and I think they're terrible and I think it's going to hurt the people who are trying to overthrow [President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad. People, when they're attacked from the outside and made to hurt, become more nationalistic," Paul said on Fox News's "On the Record" Monday night.
President Obama issued an executive order Monday calling for new sanctions against Iran and its central bank, which were included in the defense authorization bill that Obama signed into law last December.
Monday's order says that Iranian assets possessed by any U.S. citizen or company, including banks' foreign branches, cannot be "transferred, paid, exported, withdrawn."
Paul told Fox News that he believes decades of sanctions imposed on Cuba have "backfired" against the United States.
"People who don't like my foreign policy say, 'Oh, he's an isolationist.' People who put on sanctions are the isolationists," the presidential hopeful said.
Paul, a staunch fiscal conservative, has argued repeatedly on the campaign trail for a more limited U.S. military role around the world.
When pressed on what he would do about Iran given the current geopolitical climate, Paul said the United States should stop attempting to overthrow the Iranian government and allow Israel to "deal with it."
"I think what we should do is let Israel deal with it. They have hundreds of nuclear missiles. They took care of Iraq's nuclear power plant back in the '80s. I defended them for it."
The Texas congressman said monetary assistance from the United States "inadvertently" hurts Israel and constrains its ability to develop peace treaties and defend its borders.
"This idea that we have to automatically go to war and start a war against Iran, it's crazy," he added

Monday was Ron Paul: I would discourage attack by Israel on Iran
Wednesday, who knows what that brings in wonderland. Go ask Alice, she's ten feet tall or something like that.
Okay, Congressman Paul. That kind of talk is very close to the “adhering to (the USA’s) Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort” clause in Article III Section 3 of the Constitution. Kindly desist.

Dr. Winkie ... what ever will you do after 2012’s whorehouse media circus for you ?
Dr. Ron Paul ... aka ... “Dr. Winkie ... better yet ... (drum roll) ... “Dr. Quisling” ...
The surrender monkey will encourage anything that will strengthen our enemies, or weaken America.
They are terrible. They won’t work and will act as a placebo in lieu of military action.
Ron Paul knows that what we do to Iran today will happen to us once Obama and his supporters destroy this nation and create a third-world status for us.
He is just preparing us for our future.
He is a dolt.

What a buffoon.
And the classical Greeks should not have been doing provocative things like living their own lives, because that’s what provoked the Persian invasion. Thanks SJackson.

We should go to war against everyone, yeah war war war.
Which country is he running for president of again?
Obama will destroy our military if he starts another war with the rules of engagement determined by the UN and NATO.
Hillary was at the UN last week begging for permission. They never ask the American people about any of this.
Ron Paul’s “run for president” is simply a vessel to get campaign for liberty (CFL) platform points into the Republican platform in June. Paul is just collecting delegates to broker later on in Tampa when it is time to release them and he’ll make conditions. One of the conditions is that he’ll want certain CFL points in the GOP platform and the other will be that Rand gets a prime speaking spot at the convention.
RuPaul is the one who’s crazy, where Israel and her enemies are concerned. Shame on him.
He doesn’t get that Iran is our enemy. In fact, from all he spouts, he doesn’t think ANYONE’s our enemy.
But he sure does seem to empathize with those rogue regimes who consider us as THEIR enemy.
