Marines 'assault' US beaches in amphibious drill

By Paul Richards (AFP) – 1 day ago

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina — With beach landings, 25 naval ships and an air assault, the United States and eight other countries are staging a major amphibious exercise on the US East Coast this week, fighting a fictional enemy that bears more than a passing resemblance to Iran.

After a decade dominated by ground wars against insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, the drill dubbed Bold Alligator is "the largest amphibious exercise conducted by the fleet in the last 10 years," said Admiral John Harvey, head of US Fleet Forces Command.

About 20,000 US forces, plus hundreds of British, Dutch and French troops as well as liaison officers from Italy, Spain, New Zealand and Australia are taking part in the exercise along the Atlantic coast off Virginia and North Carolina.

Hope the beach was free of civilians, otherwise the beach would be covered in fear induced human feceses.

We had better be ready.
Anyone that does not see a war in Iran happening in the next 1-3 years has their head buried deep were it should not be!

I hope I am wrong but I feel that O’Dumbass will start it to get re-elected. He will do it half a$$ like in Afghanistan and get alot of our friends and family killed for nothing. He is such a fraud he will do it so it does not hurt his Muslim buddies. This guy is just plan evil.

Uh, guys? Does anyone see a possible more ominous side to this?
Why not somewhere else? As a coach told us years ago, NO practice is just practice and execute like it was real, because it could be.

The military has always had contingency plans. No way the Marines or army will be involved in a land war in Iran. We don’t have the manpower.

On the other hand....I can see 0bama sacrificing a few American Divisions.

No my thought is it was an attack on the us but not for training on any other country but the U.S...... this is practice for attacking us. Expect to see more "exercises" on our soil.
As I noted, a coach I had years ago said that NO practice, is just a practice against a made up enemy, always consider it real until the coach or ref says it is not.

When my husband was a pilot in the Navy, these exercises were practice for their deployments.

Why do you think this one isn’t?

I once exercised a Soviet invasion of Louisiana.

I always suspected it was to get the Popeyes chicken recipe.

Not unusual by any means. All our services practice for their expected role in war.

“this is practice for attacking us. “

Interesting. An amphibious assault on the Republic of Texas?

As I noted, a coach I had years ago said that NO practice, is just a practice against a made up enemy, always consider it real until the coach or ref says it is not.

I'm not sure I understand your point here. Wouldn't the coach/ref be their commanders? And they are obviously saying it's practice.

Also, this coach, did you not practice against your own team? That's making up an enemy. When I played bball in HS I was in a few practices were I was told to be a certain player from another team.

So to be honest, that quote makes no sense whatsoever. Where is our military supposed to practice?

Possible alternative reason: Given Panetta’s budget cuts, the Marines need to justify that beach front property.

I wouldn't read too much into it.

We were performing desert warfare exercises regularly back in the mid 70’s. As you know, we didn't get our boots sandy until 20 years later.

We do battle drills all the time. Sometimes on a large scale.

You have to train somewhere and train correctly.

This weekend, my unit will be practicing raids on an actual airport. Doesn’t mean we’re taking over LAX or DFW any time soon.

I wonder, do people think we would never practice using all those new San Antonio-class LPDs we just built?
