Madison - Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald said Tuesday he will challenge thousands of signatures this week - enough to prevent a recall election against him if state officials agree.
Fitzgerald made the comments Tuesday as the state Government Accountability Board disclosed it is considering using statistical sampling to determine how frequently duplicate names have appeared on petitions to recall Fitzgerald, Gov. Scott Walker and four other Republicans.
The board's director, Kevin Kennedy, said the board is committed to creating a database of those who signed the Walker recall petitions to find people who may have signed twice. But the board has not made final decisions on creating databases for the other five, he said.
Also Tuesday, board members indicated they would stick with Kennedy's plan to review challenges made by the recall targets, but not ones made by tea party groups and others.
"Just like a court, you don't just allow people to walk in and say, 'I've got additional evidence,' " Kennedy said.
Representatives of the tea party groups said they were disappointed in the decision. Campaign laws prevent them from sharing their find ings directly with the campaigns of the recall targets.
But the groups can make material available to them by releasing their findings publicly, and the tea party groups plan to do that for the senators on Thursday, said Larry Gamble, spokesman for the Wisconsin GrandSons of Liberty. That's the same day the senators have to submit their challenges to the accountability board.
Other recalls may survive
