Santorum Sweeps
Red State ^ | 02/08/12 | Leeon H. Wolf

As of today, Rick Santorum officially has no more delegates than he had yesterday. That said, as CNN is just now this moment calling Colorado for Santorum in a stunning upset, his clean sweep of the states who voted/caucused today is a stunning rebuke to both Romney’s purported march through February and Newt Gingrich’s position as the favored not-Romney candidate.

Santorum’s performance was impressive in each state, vastly outperforming his position in the polls, which had him losing by 9 points in Colorado (he won by 5) and winning by only 9 in Minnesota (he won by 18). It is hard to tell who got clobbered worse – Romney, who fell all the way to third in Minnesota, or Gingrich, who finished well behind the flailing Romney in every state. Newt Gingrich didn’t even bother to give a speech tonight, which was probably a good idea if Romney’s shell-shocked and confused concession was any indication of what we could have expected. Although Santorum didn’t get any official delegates tonight, he certainly has bought himself one heck of a news cycle, and has in one day sucked the oxygen out of virtually every other campaign with the stunning results.

The case for Rick Santorum

  1. Who has won the most states without the benefit of their own money, last election's organization or a billionaire casino sugar daddy?
  2. Who is everybody's second choice when he isn't their first?
  3. Who can get both the Romney people and the Gingrich people, who hate each other, to vote for him?
  4. Who has the best record on immigration?
  5. Who has the best plan for repealing ObamaCare? And is the only GOP candidate who didn't help write or approve legislation which helped spawn this fiasco?
  6. Who has the best plan for expanding the American economy and strengthening American families.

When and under what circumstances did Aldo Santorum naturalize?

You're spamming every thread with this. Why don't you just start your own thread on this subject, then anyone who has a concern or interest in it can discuss it in one place without spamming or irritating posters on other threads.

Great post. I wonder if Romney pulls California? Santorum will be strong in the midwest and rust belt, Newt in the South. Not sure where Mitt would call home other than the NE. Looks like a 3 way dog fight to the end.

Perspective: Total turn out all three states combined last night: 365,000 Total turn out South Carolina alone? Over 600 thousand. Turn out last night Versus 2008: DOWN 50%.

Thanks for putting it into context. And do you happen to know the delegate count for the candidates so far? Also, what do you think will happen with the Florida delegates -- do you think they'll all go to Mitt, or will they be proportioned per winner?

Hey, I'm as much a professing Christian on FR as anybody, but my stink meter pegs when I hear ANY candidate claim, "God told me to run."

And did you hear the radio clip of Santorum's "rousing" speech after winning last night, where he talks about how he's not for 99 percent, he's for everyone, rich and poor ... talk about lack of charisma! The crowed tried its damndest to offer a big cheer, but, like Santorum's speech, was about as flat as a three-day-old beer.

Now we’ll get Ann Coulter telling us all how stupid we are. Like a law degree gives you secret powers to read everyone’s mind.

When a former POW named McCain can barely win SC and other Southern states, a young Northerner who never served in the military will not do better. If Santorum had been declared the winner of Iowa he would have still been destroyed in SC. Newt Gingrich won by 12 percentage points. A few months before that he was leading by 20 points or more. Santorum barely registered. Newt is from Georgia and if there is a qualified Southerner on the ticket (especially one with the credentials of Gingrich), he is not going to get beat by a Northern politician. Ain’t gonna happen. Now if Newt were to drop out and endorse Santrom and campaign with him then Santorum could carry the South. If not, no way in hell he beats Newt Gingrich in any Southern state.

Let's see. Who lost their own state by 18 pts the last time he ran for office? Who got a lower percentage of the vote in Pennsylvania in his last run than McCain managed against Obama in 2008? Yep, that would be Santorum.

While I'm glad to see Romney lose, I shudder to think what would happen if Santorum was the nominee.

Be careful there. Newt had huge momentum out of SC and yet fizzled in FL. Granted FL isn't a traditional southern state, but still. Also the military is an influence in the South, but so is religion/morals and there is the gender gap where Newt suffers. The biggest surprise to me from last night was that the “more conservative” strength of Romney in ‘08 shifted to Santorum in ‘12. It may only be true in the Northern states, but clearly Santorum has his slice, and that was a surprise.

LOL! I’m listening to Rush right now and he’s coming as close to endorsing Santorum sa he can without actually saying “I endorse Rick Perry for President”. He’s slaying Romney on romneycare and his aobam-like assault on Catholic hospitas. He also said if you want a conservative candidate who doesn’t have any skeletons in his closet like sitting on a couch with nancy pelosi then Rick’s your guy!

My mother's parents were northern wetbacks that never became citizens. Does that mean my mother (born in Michigan) is not a natural born American? If that is true, then am I? (born in CA when it was still an R state)

You are so incredibly transparent, why don't you go back to liberal blogs where your fiews are really appreciated?

BTW, I haven't got a dog in this hunt.

This is a bubble that will soon pop.

Granted, I am very pleased that Santorum knocked Romney on his butt, but there is no way Santorum should become the nominee.

I will continue to support Newt, but I an very pleased to see Santorum knock Romney down a few pegs.

Now we will watch the Romney wrecking machine attack Santorum.....

GO NEWT GO—it’s about the survival of our country!!

No Newt's campaign isn't imploding by any means. Newt stepped back....Santorum did what the "tag team" planned for....as one poster wrote...A one two three punch on Romney, which is exactly what was needed to stop him.

This was a brilliant move and accomplished the purpose....SAntorum gets a Huge bump to keep him in the race....Newt, you note did not comment but let Santorum take the Glory and rightfully so.....The two, Newt and Santorum ,are opposiing not only Romney but his gatekeeper Paul.

So now we do indeed have a race....Brilliant move!!!! and sent Romney to the corner.!!!!

Let's see. Who was Speaker of the House who was run out of office by the conservative wing of his party becasue of his dismal leadership and half hearted support for conservative issues? Oh yeah. Newt Gingrich!

Not only Should Santorum become the nominee but he likely WILL. Thos of you who support Newt need to push back from your keyboards and get out in the real world for a little while. Newt Gingrich is one of the most despised politicians of his generation. He has +90% name recognition and +60% negative approvals. That translates into none, zero, zip, nada, upside potential. Even if he were, by some miracle, win the nomination he wouldn't carry 35% in the general.

True about Rick and skeltons. I’m trying to imagine what the dems will use to try and scare people when it comes to Rick. His children? He’s a good dad. His wife? He’s a loving husband. His career? He was a lawyer. His religion? He’s Catholic and so is the Hispanic population. He is a man of character and family values. He loves America.

I think PA would vote home-town boy Santorum over Obama. In the SuperBowl mentality of elections - Santorum will win his home state.

I could vote for Rick. I will vote for Rick if he wins the nomination. But I will never vote for Romney. If the GOP forces Romney on us I will assume that means they are fans of Obama’s policies. And there would be no point in voting at all. Go Rick! I’m making another donation to him today.

Nicely done. I give you a sucinct and concise arguement and you reply with juvenile name calling. That's a winning strategy!

My wife and I did the same this morning!
