This is not good. Famine is made out of aggressive diseases like this. It seems to be spreading across Europe pretty fast.

True enough. There were rumors of a disease wiping out deer populations here (small herds of 20-30 animals) that I heard from ranchers and hunters who get further back in the boonies than I do. I have seen no 'official' confirmation of this, and whatever it was did not appear to affect cattle herds--at least not that I know of.

That brought home to me the idea that the concept of living off the land if things get rough, even where the people are spread thin, is a fragile plan.

(Of course, the tinfoil hatter in me mutters that this could be 'arranged' by a government or other group who wished to herd the humans to food distribution points or refugee camps. With little or no forage, few could endure/resist the crying of their own hungry children.)
