The White House struggled Wednesday to contain the growing uproar over its birth-control mandate, with Democrats peeling off one by one in what has become an increasingly divisive election-year controversy.
Still, one senior Democratic aide said the plan has put some lawmakers in an awkward position.
A lot of Democrats just dont want to talk about it and be in the position of defending it, the aide said. Its horrible timing.

If Obama gives a waiver will the uproar cease? Or will it have legs?
He should have Pelosi speak about it some more.
People just love her.
Almost every article about this issue calls it a “birth control” issue. While it does concern birth control, it also is about abortion and the “morning after pill” which is abortion.
Never fear, the media will be in CYA mode. “Nothing to see here, move along”.
The peasants are getting angry ... der 0berFuhrer Emperor Hussein 0bama’s unconstitutional muslim edicts don’t set well!
More appropriate title: Obama and his socialist minions refuse to refrain from trampling on Americans’ religious freedom in defiance of the Constitution.
I hope 0bama tries to defend this one for a while; he needs to not back down too quickly. Let those with torches and pitchforks gather, and let it be timed such that the rest don’t forget in November.
My fear is that this issue is like the football team that scores the go-ahead touchdown with 2:34 left to play. They leave too much time on the clock. I want to see 0bama cave with only 0:04 on the clock.
It is time to separate the State of Obamanation from the United States of America, by IMPEACHING their Constitution-Bashing Leader Obama.
Arrogant and sneering Dictator , (in his own mind), Obama tees off all those who put Country above politics.
What becomes of the controversy??
Probably Planned Parenthood will set up offices in every school & college in every town in the USA.
Rochester NY high schools are now giving out condoms.
Oh, one other point. The whole concept of “waivers” granted by the Executive branch is completely incompatible with the Rule of Law. Just more proof that the constitution is a dead letter.
The notion that Obama can simply issue a “waiver” is almost as upsetting as the rule itself. What part of the balance of powers does this jerk not understand? Hussein cannot make law, and he cannot apply the law unevenly. The Affordable Healthcare Act is law, and Hussein is bound by it, or get the Congress to repeal the law. Better yet, repeal the law at the same time you ride his sorry butt out of town on a rail, covered with tar and feathers.

Alan Keyes: Obama Defended Infanticide
Yeah...like his edict that NASA is now to help the Arabs boost their "self esteem".....any GOP candidates on top of this....crickets
Obama passed this regulation to rally his base. He absolutely needs his base unified and enthusiastic if he hopes to win reelection. He cannot risk alienating his base by “backing down”. Yet if his internal polls are detecting some erosion of support due to this decision, it will be necessary to find a solution. Look for this “rule” once published to be brought before some accommodating federal judge. The judge will do Obama a huge service by declaring the rule “void” for some obscure reason. The base will be notified that the real “tragedy”would be if Obama loses the election. The Obama justice dept. will then not challenge the ruling. End result no back down, no rule , Catholics mollified, base intact, get on with the election.
It's NOT about "birth control." It never was.
It's about Freedom of Religion!
It's about governmental usurpation of our God-given rights.
“Almost every article about this issue calls it a birth control issue. While it does concern birth control, it also is about abortion and the morning after pill which is abortion....”
While I agree with the last half of your statement, the real issue is one of freedom of conscience regarding religious objections - which brings us to the US Bill of Rights and that pesky Amendment #1.
Too bad that many citizens do not understand basic civics. Instead they are mostly concerned with getting something for free (contraceptives), &/or bashing the Catholic Church. Our society worships at the false god of sexual license.
I feel as though I am an observer in Germany in the mid-1930’s!!!
Totally the wrong question. He understands it very well and he is getting away with it. You should direct your question to the so-called leaders of the so-called Republican Party.
I think this is calculated by the media. The HHS Abortifacient mandate is most definitely about killing new persons with unique DNA. They don’t want people to have this in the forefront of their minds.
Exactly, we should not be directing our wrath at the commie that ignorance elected.
We should be directing it at those we elected to stop him.
It is not just a “birth control” issue, nor is it only a “morning after” pill issue. It is not even only a freedom of conscience issue for religious organizations. It is a LIBERTY issue. It shows how the passage of Obamacare suddenly allows the Government to utilize its awesome coercive powers to control people’s most basic choices (nothing is more basic than control over your body, what goes into it, and who pays for it whether they like it or not). This is just the beginning. Roe v. Wade was just one issue and you can see how it has divided this country to this day. Obamacare will be a thousand Roe v. Wade’s. The Government will be able to tell employers what insurance they can or cannot provide, for free or for a fee, and wait till they approve or not approve payment for “controversial” drugs. This will show how the Government literally has life or death power over its citizens. This will finally show the nature of liberalism free of artifice: a jack booted ideology that thinks nothing of enforcing its preferences by force.

The one thing that may save him will be if the Supremes toss Obamacare in it’s entirety this summer, rendering these policies moot.
Irony, the Mark of Quality Literature.
Pelosi is God's gift to Republicans. Yes, let he speak some more on how Courageous it is for Democrats to oppose the Catholic Church (her church).
It would make another great Ad along with "We have to pass this bill so you can find out what's in it"
You mean the Progressive/Liberal/Democrats Sacrament.
We knew long ago...look at the date this was posted:
Okay...so you don't want to do that....so we'll have to bring in MORE Planned Parenthood bases and "we the governnment" will pick up the tab.
Because our Senators and Representatives, elected by we the people, think it is a good thing to do.
John Fund pretty much settled the question on Hannity. If the federal government wanted to assure universal access to contraceptives (and abortifacients), it could give them out on street-corners. There are hundreds of solutions if access is the problem. But that’s decidedly not what the Obama administration has in mind. It’s not even a matter of getting someone else to pick up the tab (Planned Parenthood & local state- and community-funded clinics are already doing exactly that—on tax-payer money, of course). Pure and simple, it’s an attack on the enemies of abortion.
The thing that I see missing is all this is what about the RIGHTS OF ALL EMPLOYERS (not merely religious institutions).
Why should a Roman Catholic hospital be exempt from going against conscience, and individual employers are not?
Why should an evangelical, or Roman Catholic, or heck, and atheist, business owner be forced to pay for services of any kind—especially if he (alone...as he is paying the bill...) considers them unethical?
So now religious GROUPS are more free in their conscience than individuals? What kind of 1st Amendment protection is that—which leaves individuals out?
“Exactly, we should not be directing our wrath at the commie that ignorance elected.
We should be directing it at those we elected to stop him.”
AMEN!!! Although our fury is big enough to be directed at both.
Exactly. This is what the Progessive/Liberal/Democrats want to do. They wish to eliminate individual rights and replace them with a socialism that expresses Progressive/Liberal/Democratic beliefs only.
The biggest trouble I have with that socialism is that it is strongly atheistic and strongly anti-Christian in it's current form. Christians are singled out as 'Extreme' and 'out of touch' right wingers who need more liberalism. It's gotten to the point where this administration is trying to label them as terrorists to be put in the jails at the very least.
So you are exactly right, it is an attempt at wiping out individual liberties and rights.
"I am dumbfounded that in the year 2012 we still are fighting about birth control," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand of New York
"It is sad that we have to stand here yet again to fight back against another overreach and intrusion on women's lives," said Gillibrand, a Catholic. "The power to decide whether or not to use contraception lies with a woman, not her boss."
Dolan urges Obama to back down on birth control
And I am dumfounded at her ignorance of the faith she claims to embrace.
Wikipedia says she is a Roman Catholic.
When will the church use church discipline? Will it come after it is forced out of the United States? What does it take? An outright denial of faith?
Opposing your own churches key doctrines is usually enough in most churches. Why not here??
He can't stop quickly without loosing his nutroots. The KOSaks, The DU'ers, and the Progressive Mainstream media will have a kanipsion fit.
Remember, he is campaigning in the Democratic Party. And the party is wild for abortion right now. It is their Sacrament.
I am amazed that ALL of the NY dems seem to hold this very same view. It’s sickening. I’m not Catholic but I truly feel the Church should excommunicate any and all of these bafoons.
