LINCOLN, Neb. An American Indian tribe sued some of the world's largest beer makers Thursday, claiming they knowingly contributed to devastating alcohol-related problems on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota said it is demanding $500 million in damages for the cost of health care, social services and child rehabilitation caused by chronic alcoholism on the reservation, which encompasses some of the nation's most impoverished counties.
The lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court of Nebraska also targets four beer stores in Whiteclay, a Nebraska town near the reservation's border that, despite having only about a dozen residents, sold nearly 5 million cans of beer in 2010.
Tribal leaders and activists blame the Whiteclay businesses for chronic alcohol abuse and bootlegging on the Pine Ridge reservation, where all alcohol is banned. They say most of the stores' customers come from the reservation, which spans southwest South Dakota and dips into Nebraska.
"You cannot sell 4.9 million 12-ounce cans of beer and wash your hands like Pontius Pilate, and say we've got nothing to do with it being smuggled," said Tom White, the tribe's Omaha-based attorney.

If they succeed, it opens the door for millions more and another industry is strangled.
I am going to sue Dr. Pepper, Frito-Lay, Oscar Meyer and Mrs Baird Bakeries for making me fat!
I wanna sue the government for making me poor.
Hmmmm, I wonder if one could sue the Indian tribes and their casinos for causing people to lose lots of money, become addicted to gambling, and in some cases ruin marriages.
Let’s HOPE some activist judge doesn’t rule in favor of the indians. How absurd this suit is....I go to the casinos in Oklahoma which are run by indians and they sell alcohol and smokes.
This is the Oglala Sioux finally pushing back against the failed Progressive god worshipped by Teddy Roosevelt and his running dog lackeys.
White Clay used to be the BUFFER ZONE in Nebraska that protected the more populated area in South Dakota from the liquor vendors.
Roosevelt gave away their reservation land to illegal immigrants and opened the door to widespread destruction of tribe members.
These folks really can't deal with alcohol anymore than Roosevelt could handle concepts of national sovereignty, private property, limited government or moderate tax laws.
I noted earlier that when you don't have the enzymes to metabolize liquor you can drink a couple of six packs and be drunk for weeks, and that's the problem here. It's like almost everybody around there is a binge drinker ~ no cocktail parties for these guys. That's not what's happening.
You sure as hell can. If the Injuns don't like the firewater heading into there territory, maybe they should get out there and put check points going in to the reservation. This is the most outrageous lawsuit.
I was a drunk and managed to quit.
I’m going to sue the company that makes Fiskars. I have this bad habit of running with scissors, and I just can’t seem to cut it out...
Is it too hard to not drink? Blame the beer companies is as about as stupid as I have ever heard. Personal responsibility seems to come to mind. How about suing the car companies because cars can kill. That should be worth at least a few billion.
And what would have happened if this liquor/beer store refused to sell alcohol to any Indian who requested it?
Yes it does, just makes me wonder exactly where they got the idea?
Not many choices, so "if they succeed" all that means is that the federal courts are open to handle federal suits.
HISTORY NOTE: The Pine Ridge Reservation extends all over the place. There are a couple of ancient sacred sites that show up as little outliers South in Nebraska further East. Those are graveyards. Just about anybody ~ white, black, Indian, whatever ~ who dies in the area ends up there. Folks doing geneology may be surprised to find a non-Indian ancestor on the list of burials.
My post earlier....
While I'm not sure about your six-pack and drunk for weeks idea....
But I know for a fact...alcohol effects American Indians differently.
The more the money, the more consumption of fire-water.
Ah, now you have made me think a little deeper...that kind of defense didn’t work out so well for the tobacco companies. At first I thought this was absolutely ridiculous and would be tossed. Now I’m not so sure.
The federales should simply return the land to the Indians, pay off the present owners, and pull outta there.
If they manage to cut off the alcohol supply, I guarantee that the stills will be up and running inside of a month.
Victomhood appears to be genetic.
Oh, pulllleeeeze. “I can’t control myself so therefore it’s their fault.”
Alcohol & tobacco. We’re even steven.
There are Europeans, Africans, East Asians, South Asians, North Asians and American Indians with this problem.
One of the more famous studies focused on Northern and Skolt Sa'ami for a substantial period of time and demonstrated that there were extended families that simply couldn't metabolize alcohol. Some Sa'ami nations have a lower than normal incidence of alcoholism because they adhere to the dicta of a very conservative church that fights alcohol 24/7.
The Oglala Sioux have a widespread problem that can be solved if and only if someone gives them new livers with some new genes.
Pine Ridge Rez is in SoDak.
Your Indians must be diffferent than Oklahoma Indians. Our Indians get free housing, free food, free money....and don't have a damn other thing to do except bitch and drink and do dope. And yes, I'm an Indian....except I have a job.
I was an easy case per day drinker myself for years and managed to quit cold turkey.
With Socialism’s creation of the entitlement culture, people think they are entitled to life without consequence. This is the fantasy world of the Unicorn Farm where people will take a walk down the Santa Monica Pier for a trip on the Mother Ship. Does anybody have three quarters and a five-dollar bill for these Pine Ridge Indians?
Smokers should sue the tribes for their medical problems.
You do know the Osage, Comanche and others arise out of the same Assinoboine group as the Oglala.
I’d hate to be siouxed by an indian
That door was opened long ago with the suits against the tobacco companies.
Yea, yea. Let me guess. I'm Indian and German. German side makes me want to drink and Indian side doesn't let me stop. Or I might just be a big, fat loser that wants to get billions more so my tribe can dish more FREE money my way....
Yes ut dies but you must be a racist for saying so.s/
We are all talking about that same place ~ 400 miles West of Omaha!
Yes it does but you must be a racist for saying so.s/
Your last sentence is quite out there.....
You have the choice to abstain from drinking that beer, jackass.
No, you'd know the problem if you had it. You don't know it. You don't have it. Again, you make a mistake in thinking it's about QUANTITY. It's not. It's about DURATION.
I'm finding it difficult to believe that we have so few Freepers who've ever known a chronic drunken Indian. Don't you guys get out?
LOL! That’s really funny.
I've flown over that area for what seemed hours and hours and hours and there's nothing there.
There's this trail still eteched across Nebraska that goes on for an infinite time and then you come to this big rock ~ Scott's Bluff or something. Only rock for hundreds of miles.
Why those guys gotta' have a beer store at White Clay is a good question ~ there are hundreds of thousands of square miles where they could put it and nobody would be bothered (that's a joke BTW).
Any Judge worth his salt would smack that sound block with his gavel and pronounce this case dismissed! Are you
I want to sue the government for giving me a headache.
Well. We have chronic drunken Indians that have spent their entire life living on welfare, driving new trucks and sitting on the porch and going to the casino....allllll day. And we we have Indians that work. Apparently the Indians that work don't have time to drink....allll day.
That must have been a rough couple of days.
But my cousins were Muscogee..and Bodéwadmi...and I am Bodéwadmi also.....or Anishinaabe as they called themselves.
I happen to live on a Rez....that is not my own. But in Oklahoma, yes.
When I lived in northern Michigan I knew lots of indians who didn’t drink at all.
Honestly I can’t help but wonder why the north American indians ended up so primitive compared to the rest of the world.
