Skip to comments.Santorum: 'Concerns' about 'emotions involved' for women in frontline combat
Posted on 02/09/2012 8:25:12 PM PST by Tailgunner Joe
Rick Santorum, in an interview with CNN's John King a bit ago, was asked whether he thinks it's a good idea or a bad idea for the Pentagon to relax some of the rules about women taking frontline roles in combat, "perhaps opening the door to a broader role for, ultimately, women in combat."
His answer was both praising of women serving the country, and as a part of the armed services, but he went on to explain why he would take issue with women on the front lines.
"Look, I want to create every opportunity for women to be able to serve this country, and they do so in an amazing and wonderful way. They're a great addition to the - and have been for a long time - to the armed services of our country," Santorum said. "But I do have concerns about women in frontline combat."
He added, "I think that can be a very compromising situation, where people naturally may do things that may not be in the interests of the mission because of other types of emotions that are involved. And I think that's probably - you know, it already happens, of course, with the camaraderie of men in combat. But I think it would be even more unique if women were in combat. I think that's probably not in the best interests of men, women or the mission."
It's not clear exactly what Santorum meant by "other types of emotions that are involved" for women who would be serving in frontline situations. I've emailed a spokesman for a clarification, but haven't heard back yet.
Nice to see there’s at least one candidate that doesn’t look at women as cannon fodder...
And he’s helpfully providing quotes for Obama campaign commercials if he gets the Republican nomination, too.
Here we go how dare he link women to emotions. /s
Don’t you know women are cold hard killing machines just like any man in fact more so? Stronger too. And having them around men in some wasteland far from civilization raises no tensions. /s/s
Oh, I forgot. Santorum was never in the military. Another empty suit.
No way women should be in combat! It’s stupid beyond a doubt!
We say we want a conservative, oh why can’t we get a conservative for a change? One finally shows up and we all say oh no no no! He just can’t win. We don’t want him.
I didn't know we had a form of Govt' that demanded people from the military lead it.
Many men who see combat never want to talk about it and spend the rest of their lives wishing to forget it. I’m not sure it is a good idea to subject a woman to that, not because she is less emotionally stable but because women are often the nurturers and comforters of our society. How difficult it might be to show that side of themselves after witnessing the brutalities of war.
Since when has this election been about all this moral/emotional mumbojumbo?
Lets get back to the crux of this debate, socialism vs capitalism.
Soup lines Vs Jobs
Prosperity Vs crushing debt
Home brew cheap energy Vs High cost Energy alliances with enemys.
“Lets get back to the crux of this debate, socialism vs capitalism.”
So if the unemployment numbers go down a few points, Obama wins.
When a woman’s man gets messed up due to the brutality’s of war, she gets messed up too.
Well the numbers just went up.
I spent over 1/4 of my life wearing this nation's uniform. I agree with Rick.
I hear you, but we need someone who has some experience doing something, someone with accomplishments.
What does Santorum bring to the table? He says the right things, but then so does my conservative-leaning barber.
What is Santorum's experience? What has he done? Well, I'll tell you. He was a sitting Senator who lost his seat in a swing state. That's bad, really bad.
Here's the problem. There's no real alternative here. Mittens? No way. Newt? To this day I can't figure him out.
Personally, I'm hoping for a brokered convention.
So Johnny comes back from war missing his legs and an arm as well as an eye, and maybe his manhood is gone too.
How is this not a bitch for the Woman married to him?
How is this worse than her having been in battle?
And if she dumps his ass because he is broken and no longer a producer, how is this good for him?
I’m not making judgements. I’m just asking serious questions.
Tailgunner Joe, the Rachael Maddow fan, posts another hit piece with a negative spin on legitimate conservative comments.
Some of us remember how Newt stepped in it, when he pronounced women would get infections in the trench on a monthly basis.
Another Paul not attack !
So you peddle Romney AstroTurf here ????
Romney bot ???
You’re smoking some serious crack if you think Joe Is a Maddow fan Newb.
Are you a DU troll too ??
Donald is that you?
Romney attacks areunleashed now !!!
This same tired story had been posted twice from the
Usual Dem party front groups !!!!
And Romney bots are posting here now !
The real issue here is that of physical strength; which is an important factor directly related to survival in a combat environment. Of course, it is possible strength will not be required due to the advent of modern equipment/weaponry; however, when things go wrong or equipment breaks down; physical strength can mean the difference between success and failure ...or even life and death.
Of course the real reason for all this is to allow more females to be able to document some sort of combat experience; thus “getting their tickets punched” and giving them greater potential for promotion.
Knock off the ad hominem attacks and stick to the article.
If you dislike all of the choices, then why do you want a brokered convention? One of these four dudes is going to be picked by the delegates if there is one.
The last hit piece on conservatives he posted was from Rachael Maddow's blog.
While the slant of the article implied it was female emotions, it was clear from the context of his actual quote that Santorum was referring to either the protective instincts of men toward women or possibly to romantic feelings, which involve the emotions of both.
Don't buy the spin.
“Some of us remember how Newt stepped in it, when he pronounced women would get infections in the trench on a monthly basis.”
I remember that. I guess he’ll also lose the bra burner vote.
Your one to talk about attacks !
Your tired comments are full of threats and put downs .
Get a grip .
So he posted an article that highlights how Santorum pissed Maddow off.
Because I'm a hopeless dreamer. If none of the four can get a majority, maybe, just maybe, the convention will pick a compromise choice that everyone can live with.
While I'm dreaming, wouldn't Gen. McChrystal be an interesting choice? I have no idea if he's even a Republican, but it would be a real slap to Obama. Middle America would love it.
He's posting liberal spin attacking Santorum, some from extremist liberal sources. Probably just a bitter Newt fan.
Santorum was referring to either the protective instincts of men toward women or possibly to romantic feelings, which involve the emotions of both.
With the repeal of DADT, doesn’t that leave the possibility that there could be fella for fella romantic feelings?
This DADT repeal really has made a mess of things.
“He’s posting liberal spin attacking Santorum, some from extremist liberal sources. Probably just a bitter Newt fan.”
But once you go that route, you can come up with all kinds of fun things that Newt said about orphanages, monthly infections, moonbases, etc.
Santorum wants to revert that policy.
I take your point; but, I’m really not “buying” the “spin” I just honestly believe that using the term “emotions” in this context will create a negative connotation in the minds of most women. Rick is trying to “skirt” the issue (no pun intended) and, in doing so, he only makes it worse.
So you want the party bosses to choose the nominee for you? You do know that that's what a brokered convention entails, right?
“Santorum was never in the military”
Neither was Obama; at least Santorum isn’t volunteering another group of Americans to fight. He’ll be in charge of the military if he’s president; does that allow him an opinion?
Anyone who pays taxes can have an opinion on the military; we pay for it, and (theoretically) they can draft us & our children.
I have two very good friends currently in the serving in the U.S. Army, in different units and locations. Both are combat vets with time in Iraq and Afghanistan. One’s a staff sergeant, and the other is a 2nd Lieutenant, and both have told me the same thing-—that the women in their respective units are just about useless for combat-related training and missions. They say that most are just in the service to have a good time and to find a husband.
I agree with you completely. All we need is to have women with children being sent into battle and coming home missing limbs and so emotionally spent that they can't care for their families. That would be an incredibly stupid thing to do, but it seems to me that we are smack in the middle of a stupid era in this country. Just take a look at the current administration.
So you love Santorum.
Ignore Joe’s steadfast posts on communism /s.
I don’t think Santorumn’s all that much.
I dont hate him or nuthin, but I think he is way to narrowed to govern.
Yep. And I'm so disheartened by the choices we have now that I'd be willing to roll the dice.
Santorum = Goldwater. We know how that turned out.
Romney = McCain. We know how that turned out.
Newt = ??? He could be anyone from Abe Lincoln to Jimmy Carter.
Paul = forgetaboutit
So yeah, I'll take my chances at the convention.
Actually I support Rick Santorum and I am against sending women in the combat zone to use our military as some kind of feminist social experiment. The drive-by media thinks Santorum sounds like a nut but I don’t think so, I think he sounds like a FReeper!
Gingrich tough on women, gays in military December 11, 2011 The former House speaker also does not favor women in direct ground combat units.
For the record I was for Barry Goldwater when I was 5 years old because “I liked gold and I liked water”
Not a lot has changed in elections
People are goobers ruled by emotion.
Glad to hear it. When an article has an unfavorable spin for conservatives I like to set the record straight in the initial comment - as you see, this post and a similar one have spawned many “Santorum hates women” type comments.
My great-grandmother, amusingly enough, used to use a similar argument as to why women shouldn’t be allowed to vote. Excluding herself, of course.
