TACOMA, Wash. - A rabidly anti-gay church known for its loud protests is planning to picket Saturday's funeral for the two sons of missing mom Susan Powell, who died in a raging house fire Sunday.
Margie Phelps of the Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church sent out a tweet saying the church will attend the boys' memorial service as a protest against the pending legalization of gay marriage in Washington state.
The two boys, Charlie and Braden Powell, were killed Sunday in a gasoline-fueled house fire set by their father Josh Powell after they arrived for a supervised visit. Powell himself also died in the inferno.
Alina Powell, Josh Powell's sister, called the church's planned protest "a horrible, disdainful act that serves no purpose other than to continue the years-long objectification of those little boys."

Puyallup, WA is nothing like Seattle.
These folks are likely to get hurt and the Pierce County Sheriff may not notice.
Y’know, I wouldn’t be surprised if gay rights groups bankrolled Fred Phelps.
I cannot even think of words bad enough to describe the members of this so-called “church”.
There’s a special place in hell for people that insert themselves into funerals like they do.
Ditto. IMO, they’re litigation trolls, intentionally “cruisin’ for a bruisin’” so they can sue for a bundle. Most of the adults in the family are lawyers.
REAL friends PING their friends to threads!!!
There is no respect here and obviously no grief for the boys.
There are few churches where humanism hasn't taken over, ergo, the “great falling away” that is prophesied.
Christ said that many will say they did this and this in his name, and he will say....depart from me, I knew you not.
Really sad....so also that church that goes around and protests military funerals.
You know, I hope you’re right. What these pieces of filthy trash plan to do at those poor little innocent children’s funeral is a travesty.
If they want to protest Washington State and gay marriage, why the h*** don’t they go to the state capital where the leftist politicos are???
They deserve whatever happens to them - they’re despicable, mean bullies who are long overdue to be taught a lesson.
A church they are not, Westboro is just a gaggle of Democrat lawyer goons. Their leader, Fred Phelps has received multiple awards for his service in the advancement of racism from the utterly corrupt NAACP and other so-called "civil rights" outfits.
I heard on the news that the “Occupy Seattle” group will be protesting against the Phelps. I imagine many conservatives will be there as well - should be interesting.
“Phelps earned a law degree from Washburn University in 1964, and founded the Phelps Chartered law firm. The first notable cases were related to civil rights. “I systematically brought down the Jim Crow laws of this town,” he claims. Phelps’ daughter was quoted as saying, “We took on the Jim Crow establishment, and Kansas did not take that sitting down. They used to shoot our car windows out, screaming we were nigger lovers,” and that the Phelps law firm made up one-third of the state’s federal docket of civil rights cases.
Phelps took cases on behalf of African American clients alleging racial discrimination by school systems, and a predominantly black American Legion post which had been raided by police, alleging racially based police abuse. Phelps’ law firm obtained settlements for some clients. Phelps also sued then-President Ronald Reagan over Reagan’s appointment of a U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, alleging this violated separation of church and state. The case was dismissed by the U.S. district court. Phelps’ law firm, staffed by himself and family members also represented non-white Kansans in discrimination actions against Kansas City Power and Light, Southwestern Bell, and the Topeka City Attorney, and represented two female professors alleging discrimination in Kansas universities.
In the 1980s, Phelps received awards from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government and the Bonner Springs branch of the NAACP, for his work on behalf of black clients.
What on earth does the despicable murder of these poor children have to do with gay marriage?
They provide one useful purpose, EVERYBODY, from FR to Daily KOS, to Ladies Home Journal to GQ thinks they are disgusting.
Some people are just crazy.
“In the 1980s, Phelps received awards from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government and the Bonner Springs branch of the NAACP, for his work on behalf of black clients.”
WOW, that’s amazing I never heard any of that before.
But, it’s WIKI, is it well cited?
You mean, the guy actually used to be functional enough to show up in court?
I can’t believe the NAACP is supportive of him today.
What happened to him, when and why did he go off the rails?
I had heard that this is less of a church that it is a little cult.
How strange they really are.
Algore still probably thinks the Westboro goons are just peachy. As DemoRATS, they share the same socialist creed.
They are “officially” an odd kind of Old Testamentish line of purported prophets. I don’t understand more about their official theology. Many believe they are really nothing but attention hungry money chasers — they pick fights then they sue when they get retaliated upon. They are not Christians and are light years apart from any kind of Christian Baptist.
Evil, litigious attention-mongers.
This is the same mob that protests military funerals.
I do hope that many Patriot Guard riders choose to spend a little weekend time in Pullayup.
That’s no church. It’s a hellhole made “human”.
Not a church. There’s nothing remotely Christian about that organization. They may call themselves “Baptist”, but that’s all it is—a bunch of demented attention seekers calling themselves Baptists. Hell, that “preacher” is probably a closet homosexual himself, and this is how he expresses his denial.
Does WBC actually show up for all the protests they say they’re going to hold? I know they travel around the Midwest from their base in Topeka, but transporting a big group all over the country has got to be cost-prohibitive. I’ve heard the theory that they make money with lawsuits, but I’ve never seen any court records that substantiate it.
This “church” gives real Christians a black-eye with their hate-filled, litigious activities.
I believe God expects us to learn from his words, to teach and to forgive.
Me, I’m not perfect; but I try always to share my love for the Lord and not judge (there are so many things I do wrong and could learn to do better).
” should be interesting.”
Very. And what day again will that be?
Thanks for that, I went to Wiki for their full article....I had no idea of his back ground and it has never been mentioned on any “News” report that I have ever seen...that want him portrayed as wacko christian.
What is the difference between him and the Saul Alinsky disciples....rhetorical question.
He uses his obscene and hurtful Anti-gay Protests because he knows that he will get better national coverage as a hater than as a Civil Rights and Community Organizer. It fits in with the narrative the MSM wants to distribute.
