GOP needs bold agenda for campaign, Ryan tells activists

Washington - Republicans should base their 2012 campaign on an agenda so bold and ambitious that victory would hand the party a transformational governing mandate, House budget chair Paul Ryan told a gathering of conservative activists here Thursday.

"This election cannot be just a referendum on President (Barack) Obama's failed leadership," said Ryan, of Janesville. "Americans deserve a choice - a choice between two dramatically different visions for our country's future. As conservatives, we owe Americans that choice."

The Conservative Political Action Conference kicked off its annual event Thursday, a mecca for presidential candidates, leading lawmakers, conservative celebrities and the activist grass roots.

This year, there's a distinct Wisconsin strain at the gathering. Ryan, well-established now as a national figure in the GOP, was the banquet speaker Thursday. Gov. Scott Walker, a new hero on the right after warring with organized labor, is the banquet Speaker Friday night.

Ryan assailed Obama's record, describing his agenda as "debt, doubt, and decline." And he made what he called the "moral" and "political" case for "going bold" in this election, for pushing historically controversial ideas like entitlement reform in an effort to draw sharp lines and win a defining victory.

Ryan cited his own success in getting House Republicans to unify behind his far-reaching plan to restructure Medicare.

"Everybody knows this is politically risky territory. Republicans have their battle scars on entitlement reform," said Ryan, who argued that waging a "a campaign focused solely on the president and his party" is a mistake.

"Boldness and clarity offer the greatest opportunity to create a winning coalition," he said. "We have a unique opportunity to sweep and remake the political landscape."

A little vision? This won’t make the GOP elite happy.

Didn’t Rep. Ryan get the memo? The GOP is all about get in line, don’t make waves, wait your turn to belly up to the public trough.

I watched some of this yesterday but got so turned off (thus I did the same) when some 4-eyed, Establishment, RINO, A-hole (whose name I don’t know and could care less) began excoriating the T-Party and instructing it/us NOT to attack Dear Leader as that was (para) bound to “allienate” the mods/centrist.

Forget about bold agenda. The only way Obama can be beaten is to find some really damaging information about his mysterioous past. If the information had come out in 2008 Obama wouldn’t even be in the picture in 2012. The Republicans would be talking about defeating Hillary.

What’s more damaging than his own admission that his father was not a citizen and therefore he is NOT eligible to hold the office of President? That really made waves, didn’t it? NOT!

FTA: "The only thing Republicans control is the House," said Ryan. "We can help set the agenda. We can't set it entirely, but . . . the House and the nominee can work in concert with each other in framing this choice and giving the country the respect of letting them chose from two competing visions."

FTA: Speaking earlier in the day, GOP Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin told the gathering: “President Barack Obama is not someone we can compromise with - President Barack Obama is someone we must defeat.”

Johnson, the Senate freshman who has become an outspoken voice in the Senate for cutting government, spoke Thursday morning and was part of a panel on federal spending.

Saying government spending in the U.S. wasn’t too far behind Greece and Italy, Johnson declared, “Congratulations, America! We have arrived at the lower level of European socialism!”

really damaging information about his mysterioous past.

It wouldn't make a bit of difference.

It might have in 2008 but the people who are going to vote Baraq won't be swayed now.

They are looking forward to 4 more years of government gravy.

I have bad news for Paul Ryan. As long and Tammy Faye Boehnor and Mitchie The Kid McConnell are in control of the GOP legislature there isn’t going to be much of a vision for America. Unless you consider go along, get along, don’t make waves a visionary philosophy.

And your solution is what? Vote for Obama and Democrat of the Month for Senate? Do nothing? Gripe?

I suggest that it is foolish to toss rocks at those who are trying to fix things, unless you have a better suggestion.

Apparently Ryan thinks the public is demanding entitlement reform this election cycle, and the issue is a political winner for Republicans. While nobody argues that reform of Social Security and Medicare will not be required at some point, a lot of conservatives think this is the wrong time for this particular “bold” initiative.

Based on the timing and politics, I disagree with Ryan.

My solution is forget about the Dems. We need to clean our own house so Paul Ryan will have a chance to perhaps advance some of his ideas successfully. Until that happens the cause will not advance.

The Republicrats just overwhelming voted to extend the payroll tax waiver with nothing in return, pass the Armed Forces Defense bill which allows US citizens to be grabbed off the streets and held without trials indefinitely, allow drones to start patrolling the entire country surveilling you and me at will and I could go on and on. What’s wrong with that picture?
