Eastern Europe: Cold Spell Freezes the Danube and Black Sea, Hundreds Die of Hypothermia
International Business Times ^ | February 9, 2012 11:41 AM EST | IBTIMES STAFF REPORTER:

As the European cold front is about to enter its third week, the Danube River and Black Sea have frozen over in many countries, with La Repubblica reporting that 420 have died across Europe.

...

The Black Sea waters around the Ukrainian port city of Odessa were completely frozen for the first time since 1977, and Ukrainian ports will remain closed until at least Feb. 15. Russia's Novorossiysk port, usually an ice-free port all year round, was closed for two days last week because of ice. In the Romanian Black Sea port of Constanța, the waters were frozen for up to 400 meters from the harbor.

Why is it that the distribution of the world’s population tends towards “warming” and away from “cooling”?

And, how many deaths annually occur around the world due to “extreme heat” and how many due to “extreme cold”.

For the ansers, whatever they are, don’t go to the bishops of the school of “man made” global warming. When they are not ignorant of the answers, they are uncomfortable with them and would rather you did not find them.

For those who think the solar cycle has a bigger impact on climate than "global warming", the last three months give some cause for concern that things will get a bit cooler:

Wish they’d send some of that action down here to southern Louisiana. We haven’t had a good freeze this winter, and the mosquitoes are going to be absolutely miserable this spring/summer.

I just blame radiator cat. I'm really stealing Europe's heat to keep Ohio relatively warm. Today might be the first snowfall of more than an inch, so it has been a pretty warm winter.

It has been remarkably mild in Pennsylvania this winter. We are halfway through winter and hardly any days (or nights) have gone below 20 degrees. One snow worth digging, and even that got washed away by rain the next day. In the past two weeks we’ve had several days above 50 degrees, some near 60. New York City has experienced similar balmy conditions this winter.

To: Lady Lucky; All

The mildness here in the Eastern US and the very cold winter in much of Europe (as well as other weather) has common cause. The Global Wind patterns (jet stream, etc) have been severely affected by the current LaNina. Expect more of this type of weather over then next decade or two. That is because the Pacific Decadal Oscillation changed phase from warm to cold a few years ago, and LaNina will be much more frequent and more severe than ElNino until the PDO changes back to warm phase. In addition, the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation recently changed phase, but I am not up to snuff on the ramifications of that.

The Danube River freezing news has me quite interested in discovering any history of that happening over the last century or more. As far as I can discover, the last time that happened was in 1985, and I have been able to locate no other historical references and records. I would appreciate it if people would ping me or link to me anything you run across having to do with history of Danube freezing.
