To be or not to be the science of theology at Russian institutes and universities? At a meeting with a group of spiritual leaders, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposed to introduce this subject to their curriculums. However, the possibility of the doctrine of God appearing in the curriculums of higher educational establishments has already stirred controversy in Russian society.

The introduction of theology in curriculums in secular institutes and universities is necessary, says the rector of Orthodox University, Hegumenos Pyotr Eremeev in an interview with the Voice of Russia.

“This will help students to get acquainted with the treasures of spiritual culture that our country is famous for. When a student of a secular university or academy is getting acquainted with the culture of Islam, Orthodoxy, Buddhism and Judaism, he will get an opportunity to understand those who live under the canons of their religions. Moreover, students who are studying the science of theology will become more educated and cultural people,” Pyotr Eremeev said.

In Russia, theology has long been considered the queen of science. The first European universities in Paris, Bologna and Padua rose up from theological schools. Since the medieval times, theology has been an integral part of university education at all leading secular higher education establishments in the world. For one, a prestigious degree Doctor of Theology is awarded not only to the clergy but also laity.

Many/most of our major colleges were originally religious colleges.

A comment from an old teacher: “The best way to kill a subject, to make it an object of scorn and ridicule, detested by students and a dumping ground for poor teachers, is to make it mandatory.”

We give Putin a lot of crap on this site. But he’s also the person requiring that high school students read “One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich”, which is fictional (but very accurate and realistic) story of life in the gulag. If this book were required in US schools, OWS simply wouldn’t exist, it’s that good.

Russia needs to get its religion - it’s post-Christian society has been a disaster, starting with Communism, then the break up of their empire, then the collapse of their population. It’s a good move for them.

{It’s a good move for them}

So it is a bad move for us? We surely are proceeding down the same path that they did, why would you expect a different result?

Can’t argue that, I just didn’t want to go there.
