Quick Hits from CPAC ("Seriously Conservative" Romney won't win the CPAC straw poll?)
American Spectator ^ | 2/11/12 | W. JAMES ANTLE, III

Like my colleagues, I've spent the past couple days at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the nation's largest gathering of conservative activists. A few random thoughts:

1. There is a heavy Rick Santorum presence this year. His mometum with conservative activists is still noticeable. I'll be surprised if he doesn't win the straw poll.

2. Ron Paul, by contrast, does not have a large presence here this year despite winning the last two straw polls. Paul is the only major Republican presidential candidate who didn't address CPAC. The wisdom of this decision will be evaluated in large part based on how well he does in Maine.

Santorum will win the CPAC poll, Romney will start his downward spiral into oblivion.

Then it's either Newt, after he rolls over Santorum, or a brokered convention.

“Then it’s either Newt, after he rolls over Santorum, or a brokered convention.”

If it’s brokered, then look for Jeb. Two finger nose hold at General election.

You may be right but damn that would be stupid. Even if Jeb was Ronald Reagan but had a last name Bush—no way would that win. Obama has been running against bush for the last 4 years and blaming all his problems on Bush.

As ridiculous as I think the Republican Establishment is, I cannot for the life of me believe that they would be STUPID enough to bring in a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT candidate at the Convention. If they brought in someone that had not received SINGLE BALLOT VOTE in the primary, all hell would break loose. My bet is that the pressure would be HEAVY for Romney unless he drops out before then.

Willard said he was, “Severely conservative,” whatever that means.

All I said this morning on FR was that Romney proly got his "Severely Conservative" expression from inadvertently reading one of his sons' computer screens as he sneaked a peak at Free Republic.

Somebody was talking about "Hugh and Series"

Romney's had that on his mind ever since, so here he is trying to talk before a bunch of those same Conservatives and what does he say?

Well, he didn't say "Seriously", but he did remember "Hugh" ~ and as he said to himself "How do you pronounce HUGH?" out tumbled SEVERELY.

I get the idea the headline writer also saw "Hugh and Series", and balled up "severely" with "series" and there you get "seriously".

Cain't them people read nohow"

Who cares! At this point I’d vote for anyone or anything over Obama. I’d vote for my pet poodle over Obama. I’d vote for a ham sandwich over Obama if it was a choice!

The delegates are going to be able to vote for whoever they want if the first vote fails, and Ron Paul delegates are trying to get signed up to represent Newt, Rick and Mitt at the caucuses. Each state still gets to select from that pool when sending to the national convention, so I suspect establishment types will be able to influence the delegate selection with as many of their loyalists as they can. I think Paulites are most likely to vote for Romney, because they are probably really turned off by the social conservatism and anti-drug policies of Newt and Rick.

I think we can expect Newt and Rick’s delegates to go for each other, especially since I would think either one of them would agree to be each other’s Vice President (hopefully the delegates could be made aware of this during the process). So I would say unless the combined delegates of Newt and Rick would make a 2/3rds majority, enough to make up for planted cronies from Ron Paul or the establishment, either of them are unlikely to win a brokered convention.

The other wild card, is that Mitt will probably be trying very hard to get Rick to be his Vice President and get his delegates. I think Mitt is keenly aware that he has to sign on a strong social conservative as his V.P. to shore up the base. Unfortunately, I don’t have enough confidence in Rick to say that he would not make that deal. Newt might have to be ready to allow Rick to take the Presidential slot and settle for V.P. to sway Rick away from Mitt.

He makes conservatism sound like a disease...which is probably a Freudian slip since he no doubt thinks it is.

Romney’s vote total was distorted by the large number of students his organization bused in.

Well, James, I guess you're surprised.
