Posted on 02/11/2012 12:26:16 PM PST by Hojczyk
Three West Virginia coal plants just announced they will close this year. Metro News reported:
Ohio based FirstEnergy Corporation announces it will close three coal fired power plants in West Virginia by this fall. The closings come directly from the impact of new federal EPA regulations.
The plants to close are Albright Power Station, Willow Island Power Station, and the Rivesville Power Station. The company says 105 employees will be directly impacted.
The three plants produce 660 megawatts and about 3-percent of FirstEnergys total generation. In recent years, the plants served as peaking facilities and generated power during times of peak demand for power.
The plants operated under subsidiary Monongahela Power. Mon Power recently finished a study of unscrubbed coal fired plants in the system to determine the potential impact of the most recent environmental regulations from EPA. Company officials determined the EPAs Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) made it unfeasible to retrofit or continue operating the three plants.
The high cost to implement MATS and other environmental rules is the reason these Mon Power plants are being retired, said James R. Haney, regional president of Mon Power and president of West Virginia Operations for FirstEnergy.

Now if the Republicans can run a candidate with a political BRAIN against Munchkin, perhaps we can win this seat once and for all.
This is Munchkin’s president - we need to tie Obama AROUND HIS NECK.
Didn’t West Virginia vote for Obama? Didn’t he tell them the coal plants were on his hit list?
Americans are running out of coal powered energy plants and should be running out of patience with Obama.
Another terror attack against the US economy in the guise of environmental protection.
No, WV did not vote for Obama in 2008 and won’t vote for him in 2012: http://theblackberryalarmclock.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/2008-electoral-college-results1-1.gif
He promised in his 2008 campaign to close all the coal mines. Of course, the mine union’s UMWA site home page endorsed him. Boggles the mind.
That’s right - rip out all the coal plants in the East and hydropower dams in the West. Fund failed solar operations and windmills that go idle as they are too inefficient and costly to operate. (Ingnore the fact that dam removal dumps a century of polluted sediment on top of salmon streams and wind mills kill birds of prey along the Pacific flyway.)
Anybody else getting a true picture of the Administration’s “green” energy agenda? I think it has more to do with breaking the middle class through its pocket book than anything else.
Yes, and wasn’t the mine explosion where there had been proteators wonderfully timed?
The Games Obama Plays.
Hmmmm. The US Middle Class as a Soviet Union-style bankruptcy: simply spending into the ground, as Reagan did the USSR.
This will get ugly.
I hear banjo music.
I don’t claim to be an expert on power grids, but 660 megawatts sounds like a lot of juice to be missing during peak demand times. Especially so when summertime rolls around...
Heckuva job there, Barry. Heckuva job.
Ppl keep saying Please stop destroying our country. Please stop. And O just laughs and goes to his next plan. Please stop Pres. O. And why aren’t our pleas working? Don’t your hear us.
Look what you are doing to us. I’m sure you don’t realize you are hurting us. Please stop. LOL We need a warrior or General to save us now. Gingrich
Three coal-powered plants in exchange for Solyndra, Ener1, EnerDel and, of course, Volt.
Its all a part of Obama’s strategy. Step by step he is methodically destroying and dismantling America.
Combine this with the his keystone agenda. Its about starving America’s industry, commerce, personal consumption and discretionary abilities.
Try floating a war without energy! Simple defense will be difficult. Actually, now that he has reduced the military less fuel will be required..... as we suffer. What a genius!
FirstEnergy closing 6 coal-fired power plants
The new standards are designed to reduce emissions of mercury and other toxic pollution from coal- and oil-fired power plants. An Associated Press survey found that the changes were likely to bring the mothballing of dozens of units in the Midwest and in the coal belt Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia.
The Obama administration was under court order to issue a new rule, after a court threw out an attempt by the Bush administration to exempt power plants from controls for toxic air pollution.
FirstEnergy said its decision would directly affect 529 employees. Some of them could end up transferring to other FirstEnergy facilities and work sites, while others could take advantage of a retirement benefit being offered to employees 55 years and older, the company said.
File this under “News You Won’t Be Seeing On MSNBC/NBC/NPR”
That file is getting pretty damn big now.
Dozens of Coal Plants are shutting down due to to EPA regs and compliance costs. Dozens and dozens of coal mines are laying off thousands of workers, many union.
Railcar loadings are WAY down, and even that is being hidden by soaring loadings for the evil, lib-hated fracking sand.
The United Mine Workers voted for Economic Suicide for supporting Obama, and that needs to be driven like a spike in to the heads of coal state residents in PA, WVA, Montana, Colorado, the Carolinas, and KY.
The UMWA must be run by suits. Not Coal Miners.
HUSSEIN OBAMA KEEPING HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISE (MUST SEE LINK)
Democratic Party scumbags putting West Virginians out of work, making electricity more expensive, and destroying the economy.
Obama and his crew must really really hate America.
How will the MSM spin this into a positive for Obama and how will Obama blame Republicans when people start freezing to death in the winter and suffering heat stroke in the summer?
Santorum can reach these people.
So how do we recharge our $280,000+ Chevy Volts?
Great news, Coal unions voted and supported Obama, let them reap the harvest they have sown.
Folks here in Eastern Ohio would rather Obama fall off the planet...but thanks to Cleveland and other urban slime dwellers, he still prevails.
How much of Washington, DC’s power is provided by these plants? I think that a “blackout” or at least a “brownout” of DC is in order.
FirstEnergy closing 6 coal-fired power plants (Ohio)
FirstEnergy Corp. said Thursday that new environmental regulations led to a decision to shut down six older, coal-fired power plants in Ohio, Pennsylvania and Maryland
So...tally is running at 9 so far....Ohio, Pa, Maryland and now WV....
I think it’s time for American business to ignore anything coming from the EPA and the federal government and dare them to stop’em.
An Ohio-based utility announced Thursday that it is shutting three Lake Erie coal plants and all but one unit at another, a move that will scrap some of the biggest fish killers along the Great Lakes... http://www.chicagotribune.com/site/newspaper/news/ct-nw-power-plant-shutdowns-20120127,0,3096384.story
Yeah, but no one is freezing to death . . . yet. When they start, I doubt too many will be concerned about fish, Global Warming, or any other liberal cause de jour.
West Virginia will still probably go to the Democrats
Union voters=monumental stupidity.
Soon we'll consume water like in Sudan.
We'll use electricity like a North Korean.
We'll consume food like an Ethiopian.
Our CO2 output we'll be much lower and we can be more like the rest of the world.
United Mine Workers told all their rank and file to vote for Obama as well. How’s that working out for them now?
“Santorum can reach these people.”
I agree, but I was thinking more of the Senate seat and getting this fraud out of there.
West Virginians are just like Jewish voters, in the pockets of the Democrats.
This is sickening. One of the poorest states in the nation and this national hack just keeps on trying to bring us down.
Where does Chicago and D.C. get their electricity? I think the only blackouts there should be would be where his constituents are.
Prayers for those being slashed and burned, especially the kids. I’ve been there.
That is the sound of WV former coal plant employees changing their registration from Democrat to Republican.
His goal is to destroy the US economy, to convert us into a socialist nation, to make sure we are not the sole superpower, and to bring us down to 3rd world levels of consumption. That is his goal.
Why are you asking “don’t you hear us”? When it rains do you shout at the clouds “don’t you hear us”? The rain is doing what it does. Obama is doing what Soros ordered him to do and he likes doing it.
What do you mean “don’t you hear us”? Sure, a rapist hears a woman scream “stop” but he doesn’t stop his violent act now, does he? He laughs at her screams. They are music to his ears.
Obama is raping America and if you keep screaming, it is just music to his ears.
We need a moral electorate to elect conservative politicians. That is the answer. It is also why we are not getting conservative politicians. We no longer have a sufficient large part of the electorate that is moral. We have a huge portion that now just wants freebies for nothing and will gladly trade their freedom for it.
America is done, it is just a question of how slowly we slide into oblivion. The more conservative our politicians, the slower we slide into the abyss. The more we have like Obama, the faster we race to our fall.
Two very good democratic senators represent them. I would keep voting them in until everyone is laid off.
The people of West Virginia vote Democrat. No sympathy from me.
West Virginia did NOT vote for Obama. Unfortunately, we did vote for two democrat Senators to help him push his agenda.
Screw them. Their two Dem Senators are helping to destroy America. Kinda like Jewish voters wringing their hands about the short term prospects of Israel.
This economy wrecking 3rd world Kenyan freak needs to get the boot ASAP.
