Virginia Attorney General investigating Gingrich campaign ballot signatures fraud claim
wsls ^ | February 10, 2012 | WSLS-TV Staff Reports

ROANOKE, VA --

The Virginia Attorney General's office is investigating the campaign of Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich, over claims of ballot signature fraud.

At the end of December, Gingrich told CNN that the reason he did not qualify for the Virginia primary, is because one of the people his campaign hired falsified a lot of signatures.

The attorney general's office tells WSLS that the State Board of Elections asked it to investigate the claim. A spokesman for the attorney general's office emphasized that the investigation is not looking into Gingrich himself.

I can’t halp but think that Romney had a hand in keeping Newt and Santorum off the ballot in VA. Not sure how, but this sure stinks of dirty politics, a Romney trademark.

This is actually a good thing and won’t be a problem for Gingrich (who had no way of knowing that this firm was going to falsify signatures). He immediately disavowed it and did not challenge the decision. But you have to wonder what other campaigns, including Democrat campaigns, this company gathered signatures for and mislead.

Romney qualified because he had staked out that territory ages in advance and had run there earlier and thus his campaign went out immediately and got all the signatures, which were not checked because they exceeded the number at which they had to be checked (15,000). Gingrich started later and got the minimum to qualify; Santorum got just below the minimum and did not qualify. However, the fact that Gingrich had under 15,000 meant that his signatures were going to be verified, basically because of something that had happened in a Democrat campaign just before the deadline to be placed on the ballot.

So neither Romney’s nor Santorum’s signatures were ever verified, because Romney had too many and had filed before the incident that resulted in close checking of the signatures, and Santorum had too few. Maybe this will result in everybody’s signatures being rechecked.

Looks like Newt turned in one of his own over signature fraud.

Kudos.

Got a ping list so people don’t miss this. If fraud can be proved with another candidate involved? Can Newt be placed on the ballot?

The perpetrators of this fraud should be prosecuted. Their despicable acts disenfranchised everyone in Virginia - sounds like treason to me.

“I can’t help but think that Romney had a hand in keeping Newt and Santorum off the ballot in VA.”
________________

VA Gov Bob McDonnell and Lt Gov Bill Bolling are BOTH Romney supporters and GOP “insiders” ...McDonnell is considered to be on the “short list” for Romney's VeeP slot and has endorsed Romney and been campaigning for Romney since before the SC primary.

The current VA AG (Ken Cuccinelli) is not part of the “insider/Romney” faction and tried to initiate a special session of the General Assembly to get the other candidates on the ballot and/or allow “write ins.” McDonnell and the GOP elitists “squashed” that effort before it could get off the ground. They have insisted on a very strict interpretation of the VA GOP rules; however, in the FL primary, the GOP elitists have violated their own rules by allowing Romney to be assigned all the delegates instead of assigning the delegates proportionately per their existing rules.

A few more germaine facts; Romney and Paul claimed they were submitting 15000+ signatures on their petitions to be on the VA GOP Primary ballot; as such, per the GOP rules their signatures were never verified; they were assumed to be correct and valid. Perry and Gingrich submitted the minimal requirement; 10000+ signatures. Since this total was less than 15000 signatures, the GOP rules required their petitions to be thoroughly inspected for both total count and the validity of each signature. In other words, two very different standards were applied to the candidates petitions.

Bottom line: Yes, the VA GOP Primary ballot was definitely gerrymandered to eliminate candidates perceived to be a serious threat to Romney.

Here is a copy of the rule. BTW Michael Steele said it was passed during his tenure,no except was made for Florida.

The currect President wrote a letter to officials in FL in December that the delegates were to be distributed proportionately.

Here's the rule: Encourage them to do the RIGHT thing: end the FL fiasco NOW!

It seems to me that it is very important to go out and vote for Ron Paul in the VA primary, if you are a Gingrich or Santorum supporter. It is NOT a wasted effort, if you want to help block Romney.

VA has 13+3 “at large” delegates, which, barring a miracle, Romney should win. However, each of the 11 congressional districts gets 3 delegates, for a total of 33. Say Ron Paul wins in 4 of the districts. That makes 12 less delegates that Romney gets.

Every little bit helps, and anything you can do to help prevent Romney from sweeping the state is important. So please go out and vote for Ron Paul, assuming he is still in the race on March 6. Who says your vote doesn’t matter? Lobby your friends and explain to them how important this primary is.

The following is a cut and paste of the “official” account of how the delegates from VA are chosen:

46 of 49 of Virginia’s delegates to the Republican National Convention are pledged to presidential contenders in today’s Virginia Presidential Primary, which is on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.

33 district delegates are to be bound to presidential contenders based on the primary results in each of the 11 congressional districts: each congressional district is assigned 3 National Convention delegates and the presidential contender receiving the greatest number of votes in that district will receive all 3 of that district’s National Convention delegates.

13 at-large delegates (10 base at-large delegates plus 3 bonus delegates) are to be bound to presidential contenders based on the primary results statewide.

Compute percentages to 3 decimal places, that is, 50.000%. The delegates are allocated to the presidential contenders as follows:

If a candidate receives 50.001% or more of the vote, that candidate is allocated all 13 at-large delegates.

If no candidate receives 50.001% or more of the vote, the 13 at-large delegates are allocated proportionally among those candidates receiving 15.000% or more of the vote.

Rounding rules: Beginning with the candidate receiving the largest number of votes, round the fraction to the next whole number of delegates. Continue this process with the next highest vote getter and repeat until all the delegates are allocated.

If Gingrich did not qualify to be on the Virginia ballot, why are the looking into fraud??? He filed too late. They just want to try to destroy Newt.

Yep, Newt just will not go away for their guy.

Mittens friends in the Virginia judiciary are using their power to do whatever they can do to Newt especially after he lambaste them in his CPac speech yesterday. They hate him. It's like a vampire needs blood as to ruling powers need power-I knew when he said in DC that he would investigate the Treasury, things would happen.

They are not investigating NEWT. He turned the person in that he had hired to collect signature. Investigating may include who gave the name to Newt, provided his reference. If he falsely presented himself. He falsified or made up signatures which is voter fraud in the least.

BUT they hopefully will also check emails, bank accounts, recent purchases or gift to see if the offender had been purchased by another candidate or someone invested in another candidate.

If there is any proof of that Wow ...results could get very interesting.

Glad Gingrich was willing to start this investigation about signature fraud.
Hopefully the authorities will find out who is behind it.
