Washington (CNN) -- GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney won the close-watched Conservative Political Action Conference presidential straw poll on Saturday.
Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, took 38% of the vote in the poll. Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum received 31%, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was at 15% and Texas Rep. Ron Paul stood at 12%.
When asked about their preference for vice president, 34% of the attendees at the conservative conference chose Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

And this was an on line vote (kinda odd to me) I swear this was all to help Romney because my sister was there and she said Newt had a lot of supporters who were pledged to him. Even the audience booed.
A respectable 3rd place. Apparently the people who attended CPAC weren’t quite as enamored of his speech as the writer of this blog.
WOuldn’t it seem odd if the people Romney paid to go to CPAC and vote for him would then boo him?
I was watching because I wanted to see Sarah Palin’s speech. They booed when the guy showed the VP picks, instead of the Presidential picks. They booed again when he showed the “national” straw poll rather than theirs.
Frankly, I think they booed when the other woman showed up as well. It seemed they were booing anything that held up the start of Sarah Palin’s speech. She was truly the star of the show.
BTW, Rick Santorum, of the boring speech, got a respectable 31% of the vote.
Of course, the national media is all running with “Romney wins CPAC, has his mojo back” nonsense. Santorum, when you add the votes of the also-ran Gingrich, would have beaten him.
Or, if you are a Newt fan, if only Santorum had not been there, and all his supporters voted for Newt, Newt could have won....
Is this supposed to be sarcasm?
All the proof we need, that the poll was not accurate.
Rick will be given a temp pass on vetting until he serves his purpose.
Newt understands the govt machinery, and has the ability to lay it out the complex in terms that make sense for the busy citizen. He respects his audience, and properly communicates the things that require attention. And Sarah, she’s a firebrand that radiates common sense and common values in a fun and sincere way. I would love to see those two as the 2012 team.
Hmmm. . . .
You are quite nauseating.
The online poll should be disregarded.
What about the attendee’s, how was their vote?
BTW, I don’t know of any other vote in history where 5% was called “respectable”
How did the online poll work? When did they tell your sister about it and what time period did it take place in?
Romney rigs prized straw poll at conservative gathering
It is not the first time he's bussed people in to do it. He and Ron Paul use that tactic often.
GIngrich got 15%, not 5%. The article apparently didn’t say “respectable”, that was a title originally given to this post, which has been changed.
The attendees vote is given in the blog post. The national post was closer. Romney 27%, Santorum 25%, Gingrich 20%.
So Gingrich did better in the national “online” poll than he did in the CPAC site straw poll.
I didn’t think of that. I thought it was a Newt supporter who was taking the positive view of the results. But your interpretation might make more sense. And also make my responses more like “piling on” than “making fun”. For that I am sorry.
thanks for that
Is what supposed to be sarcasm? If you’re talking about the fact that I said it was a respectable performance, of course not. I’m trying to be optimistic...what, did you expect me to say he sucked? He made an awesome speech, and sure, he didn’t win, but he didn’t do too bad either.
Both should be taken with a great deal of question. To the veracity of a true indication of the attendees, I remember Fabrizio telling about the results and I remember of the total of 10,000 attending was way more than those who actually voted 3408.
I find it really hard to believe that many “activists” would make that journey and personal expense to not vote. Especially if this is such a rock ribbed conservative group.
I remember what was it, last years, where the Paulturds ganged up at this event and gave him the straw poll win.
