Adele: "Sarah Palin made my career". New Queen of Pop credits Palin for success in US

Adele has revealed that she believes Sarah Palin is responsible for her success in the US.

The singer, whose debut album 19 peaked at number ten on the Billboard album chart, believes the American politician's appearance alongside her on Saturday Night Live bolstered her fanbase in the country.

"Sarah Palin made my career by coming on that show," she told Attitude.

Basically Adele was fairly unknown here in the US back in 2008 and her US debut, album launch and tour earlier that year had been a big disappointment and a bit of a flop.

Anyway, she ended up as the musical guest on SNL in Oct of 2008, the same episode Governor Palin was on. It got almost 20 million viewers, the highest ratings of any SNL in the past 20 years. The next day Adele was #1 on iTunes and #5 on Amazon and her album went from #46 to #11 on the Billboard 200.

If you go the youtube videos of that performance you'll see tons of comments from people saying "This was where I first saw Adele".

So, Palin's appearance on SNL was basically the launching pad for Adele's career in the US. Who knows where she'd be without it. It "broke" her as they say in the industry.

Just a fun fact about tonight's Grammys and a connection to conservatism, the GOP, and Gov Palin.

Good singer but I could do without them playing those two songs of hers over and over and over and over and over and over on the radio. It’s like OK, I liked it the first 2 million times I heard it. How about playing her other songs for once? I mean seriously, who the hell runs programming for radio stations today? Autistics? I heard even Adele herself is sick of it.

I agree. Time to bring "100 Years" by Five for Fighting back into heavy rotation. Or maybe that Coldplay song that they played millions of times but not so much since Adele came along

Anyway, I'm glad that iPods were invented. Freed me from terrestrial radio and spared me "Don't Stop Believin'" by Journey, which for some inexplicable reason, still gets played once an hour on terrestrial radio despite the song being 30 years old.

Asked if she was worried Palin was asking for her endorsement, she replied: "Obviously I've made a few comments here and there in the past, but I don't think musicians should be talking much about politics."

Well, this statement proves that Adele is more intelligent than your average entertainer. She realizes that the public likes her for her (gasp) singing and not her political observations.

I know I tell you, it’s realy baffling to me why they do this. There is only a set amount of stations that the FCC set for terrestrial radio and with it an audience in the millions that tunes in everyday, whether in their cars or whatever. So WHY do they waste all that valuable audience attention by purposely driving them away? All I have in my car is a terrestrial radio, and I can’t even listen to the music stations today whether Top 40 or the oldies simply because they repeat the same crap over and over and over and over. I listen mostly to talk radio, or some station that doesn’t follow this psychotic repetition programming which is usually a Jazz station like 89.9 FM here in New York. I grew up in the late 60’s to late ‘70s and radio back then was incredible. If it was good it got played, and not 900 times a day. It didn’t matter what genre it was. I’m talking about the major Top 40 stations. One second you would hear hard rock then bluegrass, even Banjo music. The Theme to Deliverance “Dueling banjos” was actually a hit. Crazy but the variety was what made it great. Even that theme to The Sting was a hit. They would actually play that 1920s sounding music. Oh yeah, then you had stuff like this they would play....

Oh my...that was SO FUNNY as I have thought THAT VERY THING about THAT VERY SONG several times. I LOLed.

She may be a good singer, but Adele’s manner of speaking in public is revolting.

As an aside, the music on “21” is recorded atrociously. Try listening on a good stereo: Outside of her voice, it’s almost totally crushed (overcompressed and distorted). The percussion sounds like a tomato being hit with a cheesestick and her voice is heavily processed and distorted too. Maybe it sounds ok on $2 headphones in a subway (I would not know.)

If you say you can’t tell the difference... Try finding a good recording like a Sheffield Lab (Claire Marlowe, perhaps) or Ultimate Mancini — there are thousands more, mostly pre-2000. Then find a good stereo system (upscale audio store?) and compare that recording to Adele 21. You may never go back to typical (crushed) modern pop recordings...
