The 10-week investigation into the downing of a CIA drone in Iran is raising questions as to whether the malfunctions inadvertently may have handed the Iranians not only the aircraft but its data.
Based on the review, a former intelligence official told Fox News that investigators think one of the drone's three major "data streams" began sending back bad information to its U.S.-based operator.
A leading question is whether the bad data caused the drone's operator to inadvertently land the aircraft.
But it also raises the possibility that the faulty data stream could have prevented the drone from dumping the intelligence it had collected. When a drone malfunctions, it is programmed to dump data so it does not fall into the wrong hands.
A former intelligence official confirmed to Fox News that the CIA's comprehensive review has been unable to replicate the specific malfunction that brought down the drone in Iran. Contact was lost with the drone and its operators on Nov. 29.
A congressional official, also familiar with the CIA review, said: "We have looked at this eight ways to Sunday. I can tell you it was a U.S. technical problem. The information (data) was not lining up and it was not the result of Iranian interference or jamming."
While efforts to reproduce or replicate the malfunction have failed, investigators are now focusing on how to prevent a repeat in the future -- but without the hardware or the drone itself, those efforts have been challenging.
While the former intelligence official said the Iranians do not have the ability to integrate the multiple data streams on the drone platform, the loss of the CIA drone could allow Tehran to gather information about materials and hardware. The intelligence data is thought to be encrypted and not easily accessed.

China will tell Iran everything they want them to know about it.
This is exactly why SF wanted to go in and destroy it.
Jug-ears the dumb-azz said no, the muzzies might be “offended.”

Inadvertent? Not with this CIC...
tell us about the drone pilot
does he have a new Swiss bank account?
I can guarantee you this. All of the data in and on the plane will end up in Russia,China or North Korea. What ever happen to an automatic self destruction when incidents like this happened?
I think the drone pilot of the plane is all right. Its not his fault for flying a faulty plane. This is all of General Atomics fault and the CIA’s fault for not providing secure data links.
Quite frankly, none of this makes any GD sense.
There are limited scenarios that could possibly occur. One has to be what happened.
And no, super spy drones are not designed without failsafes—that is elementary.
And they are tested prior to use.
There is collusion here somehow. And I mean, up to the White House.
There is no reasonable explanation for this foul-up, which had multiple errors. None.
And none are acceptable.
Its clear the plane did not have any failsafes because they General Atomics thought that the Iranians would not “spoof” the plane. That plane should of had a self destruct mechanism or switch the second the plane went out of control.
I heard that Obama ordered a rescue mission be put together to get the pilot back.
I would like to suggest to the CIA or Air Force to consider adding a self destruct mechanisms on all of their drone spy airplanes.
In fact Obama did send a special operations team to get the plane but they were too late.
That makes no sense. This is not directed to you personally.
Of course it had failsafes. That is standard operating procedure.
For this to even happen, there had to massive, multiple failures by multiple personnel.
Or it was ordered to happen.
With the regime, the latter makes the most sense.
The whole notion being put out by these sources that the drone had no failsafes is just disinformation...of the most insulting kind. We are not idiots.
It wouldn’t surprise me one bit if this drone just happened to have a USB drive on board that contained all of our most top secret weapons data.
those who know aren’t sayin and those who are sayin don’t know.
