Clinton: We Need Assad's Consent To Put Troops In Syria
The Cable ^ | 13 Feb 2012 | Josh Rogin

Posted on 02/14/2012 5:08:15 AM PST by edpc

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had a clear and unified message coming out of their meeting in Washington, D.C. Monday: They are looking for a political solution in Syria and won't consider putting international troops there unless the Syrian regime agrees.

Clinton and Davotoglu spent the afternoon preparing for the upcoming inaugural meeting of the "Friends of Syria" group this weekend in Tunisia. Following the meeting, they both urged the international community to support the Arab League's recommendations for Syria following their Sunday meeting in Cairo, which included a request for a U.N.-Arab peacekeeping force in Syria. But Clinton said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who the State Department accuses of murdering civilians, would have to agree first.

Asking Assad to step down and allow foreign troops into Syria?

Gotta hand it to the Dems. Just when you think they can't say anything dumber, they do.

Some other gems from the past:

"No president, through all of American history, has ever ceded -- and nor would I -- the right to preempt in any way necessary, to protect the United States of America. But if and when you do it, Jim, you've got to do it in a way that passes the, the test, that passes the global test where your countrymen, your people, understand fully why you're doing what you're doing, and you can prove to the world that you did it for legitimate reasons." John Kerry 2004

“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill.’ What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?” John Conyers 2009

“But we have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it, away from the fog of controversy.” - Nancy Peolsi 2010

If I posted all the ones I can think of off the top of my head, I'd probably crash the site.

No Hillary, you don’t need the consent of Assad to put troops in Syria.

You need the consent of Congress, and by extention, the consent of the American people.

And I hope you don’t get it.

I was surprised when Hitler gave us the go-ahead to move troops onto the beaches at Normandy. Nice bit of diplomacy there by FDR and Secretary of State Cordell Hull.

Lets clear the muddy water....we have to ask Assad for permission....BUT...we can bomb the hell out of Libya. In Libya, it was an actual fight. Syrians are being slaughtered. But wait, the Syrians are tied to the iranians. Oh the horror if we do something to piss them off.

As a friend recently put it, we can send in DevGru to take out Osama, with his wives and two bodyguards. We can send in DevGru to rescue a civilian and they take on 9 Somali pirates with crappy weapons. And,,,NO OFFENSE TO THE OPERATORS. But these missions are touted as military/foreign policy success stories. Kind of like sending the Varsity in to play the kids playing T Ball

Haven’t heard the news lately, but there are/were 19 Americans being held by the New Egyptian government that obama helped put in power. What about them?

But what about the Responsibility To Protect? Syria is killing its own people.

No RtP in Iran and now, no RtP in Syria. Anyone have any idea what is really going on?

Dear Mr. Hitler,

The activities of the Third Reich have come to our attention.
We're requesting your permission to insert our troops to control the aggressive behavior of these people.

Sincerely,
Hillary and Barack

HRC, aka Lady Magog-a, (master statesman-with “all due respect”) speaks on behalf of the “friends of Syria” club

This is our official policy, enunciated by the USA’s second smartest woman (after Nancy Pelosi)?

“Please Mr Despot Assad, oh murderous one, sanctified puppet of Russia and Iran, may we have consent to send infidel western occupiers wearing “OTAN” insignia to your wasteland of a nation to ensure that you and your murderous family and cronies can safely transport your looted treasure and illegal WMD material out of Syria under protection?..... in lieu of being hunted down, tortured, raped and hanged by your deranged equally murderous regime opponents whom we will immediately hail as democracy heroes, bankroll and support?”

Tell me again why anyone in the USA belongs to, much less chairs, a group called “Friends of Syria” club?

“good let syria kill themselves we have to take care of our own problems. getting the present regime out of office.”

This is no different then what we did in Iran. We are once again not going to intervene with a government that hates Israel slaughering their own people.

Governments that did work with Israel, it is critical we remove them from office right away.

Russia is what is going on.

Liberal democrats are not willing to stare down the Bear. Pooties people have weaponized HRC’s “reset button” and they are not afraid to use it

Insanity on parade.

This President and his “administration” are out of control.

They need to be in jail, not in the halls of power.

This is Obama’s and his State Dept’s attempt at
plausible deniability.

The unfortunate truth is that the US State Dept
and the Obama Administration are — despite the 911
Atrocities and every other atrocity before and after -—
on the side of al Qaeda and Ikhwan.
It happened before (Egypt, Libya, ...),
it will happen again.

Syria has a defensive alliance with Russia. This makes Syria a different kind of ‘target’ from Egypt or Libya. One way you night get around triggering the treaty would be to persuade the dying Assad regime to “invite” us in. Though why they wouldn’t just invite in Russian peacekeepers instead is an important question, too.

How far is Megiddo from Syria?

Imagine US, China and Russia sending troops and later decide Israel needs to be attacked over a UN vote.

Megiddo is within WMD range of Syria... within range of locations from which Syria (or its allies or proxies) could launch WMD

Har Megiddo

Hillary is a fool

Other then getting her craven husband reelected (and through him, herself) and endowing the Clinton family brand with grafted wealth by ruthless self-serving stinginess and greed, she hasn’t successfully achieved a major meaningful project or mission in her entire government career, or probably in her professional legal career either

Don’t confuse a gravelly voice, ruthless steely eyes, and sensible pants suits for gravitas

I didn't, and I agree she's a nasty, corrupt creature. But I still don't want U.S. troops in Syria.

By my calculations, it's about 90mi from Damascus to Megiddo. As silverleaf pointed out, definitely within range of Syrian missiles and potential WMDs.

They have a mixture of a few hundred SCUD-Bs, SCUD-Cs, and SS-21s. Additionally, it's been reported they developed a longer range SCUD-D with North Korean assistance. This would allow them to deploy the launchers deeper into Syria and still reach all of Israel.

What Hillary said was completely idiotic.

I don’t want to see even one single American soldier in Syria - period. If they want to kill each other, let them. A repeat of what we did in Libya will usher in yet another radical islamic regime. Maybe Obama wants that, but we don’t.

If liberal democrats were sane & logical, I’d say that maybe Hillary was “setting the diplomatic bar” impossibly high to actually prevent the serious contemplation of a western (ie. US) intervention. But then nobody should deem the members of this administration as either ‘sane’ or ‘logical’.

The Russians would love us there. Wasting more money we don't have, more American lives and more wear and tear on our inventory. In other words, more grinding down American might.

Well, reading Hillary Rodham's thin lying lips, if the Syrian regime (not necessarily Assad) "invites" troops to come into Syria, that's exactly what will happen. makes the ol' end times stuff sound more and more plausible, doesn't it. BTW, as I recall Saddam Hussein hit very close to Megiddo with a SCUD back in the DESERT STORM war. All of his warheads were conventional but everyone in Israel had to suit up as if....

No, the Russians would not “love us” to be there.
Syria, Assad and the port of Tartus are bought and paid for.
No western interference will be tolerated with one of their last prime Cold War proxies

Besides, their other buddies the Iranians would have a cow. That would be a bad thing because if they feel too isolated from the Levant, they will be even more dangerous, imho
