Think of it as a dog rental from your master, the government.
If I see a dog without a collar, should I dial 911?
Oregon counties have been known to go door to door when they need cash. They pocket either a fine or a dog license fee or both.
And dogs need licenses because??? Oh.....fees..I understand
What about a Fish License?
Dogs but not illegals.............
Dog license fee is like most other fees we are charged today, a source of revenue, plain and simple.
Why don’t they have a license license, which is a license you buy that authorizes you to buy other licenses?
That way they could raise a whole lot more money
The countys animal control unit says it doesnt actively go looking for violators, but in Townsends case deputies arrived to repossess some furniture and happened to discover Matthew missed his day in court, so they proceeded to arrest him.You may now return to your regularly-scheduled knee-jerk reactions, and be sure to thank the next local reporter you meet.
Absolutely! There’s a good chance a criminal is at large.
[[And dogs need licenses because???]]
So they can drive, silly
Clearly, this headline is totally misleading.
First, governments do get to tax you on your personal property. If you don’t like it. Change the government don’t tell them you are special and too important.
Second, Mr. Matthew Townsend, was not arrested for failure to license his dog. He received a citation to appear for not licensing his dog. He chose to fail to appear in court and was arrested on that charge. It is very hard for a government to enforce laws against people who fail to subject themselves to the jurisdiction.
Finally, I am sick and tired of people who try this. I’m too important to be bothered with these little taxes.
If I see a dog without a collar, should I dial 911?Eventually they'll start charging fees for dialing 911.
Ok, Just went and got my dog license, now what?.....
Do I have to get a dog now?
“Eventually they’ll start charging fees for dialing 911.”
If you pay monthly (prepaid, I’m unsure of, as you pay sales tax, rather than the other fees), whether it be a house phone or a cell phone, you already do. It’s between 50 cents and a dollar a month. Check your bill. You also pay for poison control center access most everywhere. Total taxes on a house phone generally run between $15-$25, sometimes costing more than the phone service itself, nearly double if you have a basic service (compared to $13 for the actual line).
(Worked for years for 3 different phone companies).
... er... my cat....
He got it out of the pound for me....
I'm sure she is not that ugly.
“Finally, I am sick and tired of people who try this. Im too important to be bothered with these little taxes.”
Based upon your post and tagline, we can assume you are a politician, then?
I’m all for dog licenses to pay for animal control, if we’re going to go back to a duty, tariff and excise tax system. But we;d need to eliminate the property and income taxes. I’m tired of the taxes on taxes on taxes. And yes the man should have gone to court. But I;m also tired of the attitude that government is entitled to all of my money. All these “little taxes” cost the average American IIRC 46% of their wages in taxes accross all levels, federal, state, local, and income, property, use, gas etc. Government needs to be rolled back to Constitutional bounds, not to a level of bearable inconvenience.
Different municipalities have different laws. Unless the veterinarian becomes the “registration detector” and blows the whistle on all dogs or cats that come in and have no license, some folks have opted to get animals from any source other than the humane society. I certainly would not advocate violating laws, but the license can’t be avoided where I live if you get an animal from the Humane Society. They tag every animal and notify metro animal control as to the new owners when a pet is adopted. The municipality follows up every year with an invoice and required proof of vacinations to boot.
Doh! Forget I said that. Don't want to give the "authorities" any ideas.
Dog licenses aside, don’t skip court dates whether for taxes, fees, crimes, or jury duty. The judge will issue a bench warrant.
I’ve got 4 dogs and not a license among ‘em! Come and get me copper! I am an outlaw!
I do the driving anyway.
Townsends were issued a $50 ticket for not having a license.
Townsends case deputies arrived to repossess some furniture and happened to discover Matthew missed his day in court, so they proceeded to arrest him.
Bench warrant for failure to appear. That's normal too. That's why he was jailed.
I don't like the dog taxes (that's what it is), but he's in jail for missing court, not the dog license.
The area I live in has a lot of shale rock beneath the surface that is good for building low garden walls. One sunny Sunday I was picking up rocks in the site of a new "townhome" development in our 20K-population exurb and the police arrived. They could only have been called by one of the nearby "townhome" owners. I could not believe it.
Now, if I want a 5-gallon bucket full of shale rock, I go when the workmen are on the scene. Usually they regard an old lady as harmless and let me pick it up. But some say, "No, we need it for backfill!" as if 5 gallons of rock and air would make a vast difference in their 10-acre building site.
my cats would tell them to stuff themselves.
That's where we're headed, pardner. I am already there.
Finally, I am sick and tired of people who try this. Im too important to be bothered with these little taxes.
Well, aren't you special? I suspect that you are actually sick and tired of people who choose to resist tyranny of all sorts.
Best wishes and Godspeed.
Yes and they can't tell the difference between a dog and a cat, particularly when the cat has a good growl on him.
Been there, fought that, got the apology.
All hail the master court.
Well done. I didn’t want it it to go without notice.
Hell, yes! Would you feel differently if he had an outstanding warrant for, say, armed robbery?
Really? Sounds like a plan...
Remember you said that when someone breaks a contract with you.
It may be that they will be the ones who remember...
Now that’s ruff justice.
Thank you for illustrating my point: in the absence of the law, one is forced to take matters into his own hands. Way to go, Rambo.
You’re welcome. Meanwhile, keep running to your government to receive your liberty.
CBS’ 4 on you side... is more literate. When reading some news papers, I just can’t believe how these writers got a degree-—not directed at you-—and the known fact that journalist are quickly becomming irrelevent while they still spin their 4th grade articulations of the subject matter. I’d say half the reporters I listen to trip over their own words, can’t pronounce peoples names properly, just being, plain talking beauties with little brain power-—some are men who are as bad or worse-— to watch Matt Lauer and company insert some kooky non-story about, “Why woman like hot dogs more than men,” the snickers begin, the open smirks, then the whole room is a giggle fest, and sometimes this doesn’t stop for five minutes-—I watch periodically to see how far down the drain reporting has become. Even Fox is becomming more Lame-stream these days, especially late night broadcasts where the same juvenile bobblers spew and giggle like pre-teens, just sickning.
Id rather see a dummy report news than a genius make up his own(spin).
No, it’s not that much of an emergency.
What is the purpose of licensing a dog as opposed to another pet? When they come for your dog, they will come for your guns. Who cares if I have a yorkie in my home? Screw them!
“how many others dont have licenses and face the possibility of arrest”
Count me in, although not for CO. And mine have been German Shepherds.
I keep finding out what a menace to society I am lately - no dog license(s), no seatbelts. Oh, and when I fished so much as a kid - no license.
Public Enemy #1.
Cats probably are supposed to.
I will say, I hate these encroaching laws on pet ownership (I live where there is a 75$ license for unspayed/unneutered dogs and a breeder permit if you decide to have even one litter, which is more than just a fee, you have to jump thru hoops as well). But, instead of just ignoring the laws and doing whatever they want, I wish people would actually work with those of us who tried hard to keep them from getting passed and failing that get the bozos who voted for them thrown out of office. Ignoring the law won’t make a diddly damn to the politicians or the law enforcement. They will just grind you through the system and go on making more stupid laws.
Aside from being a money maker the real purpose of the licensing scheme is to nudge the public into spaying and neutering their dogs and cats. Why? Because the radical animal rights agenda is to do away with pets. Don’t believe me? Google Ingrid Newkirk quotes. She’s quite open and honest about their goals. She was the co-founder of PETA and they are linked to HSUS. Both of those organizations are behind much of the animal rights and welfare legislation out there. Most places offer a cheaper license if your pet is spayed or neutered. Some places now require you to spay or neuter. As if your pet does not belong to you.
