Gingrich's Main Backer Plays Two Angles (Report: Adelson after Rick)
Wall Street Journal ^ | 2-14-12 | Mundy

Billionaire Sheldon Adelson, by far the biggest financial backer of Newt Gingrich's presidential bid, is preparing to open his wallet again. But this time, the casino magnate appears to have more than one agenda.

In a bit of political chess, Mr. Adelson is ready to not only directly support the former House speaker in the Republican primary, but to use his cash to push Rick Santorum from his position atop the latest national polls, according to people to have discussed the matter with Mr. Adelson.

Sheldon Adelson, shown with his wife, Miriam, at a Nevada caucus meeting in Summerlin, Nev., could give an additional $10 million to Newt Gingrich.

If Mr. Gingrich could afford to continue campaigning, one of those people said, he might be able to draw off conservative and evangelical voters from Mr. Santorum, improving the chances of Mitt Romney, who Mr. Adelson believes has a better chance to win November's general election.

"Sheldon says we all have to keep our eyes on the goal here—beating Obama," said a person who talked with Mr. Adelson.

According to the people who have discussed the matter, Mr. Adelson could give an additional $10 million or more to an independent group supporting Mr. Gingrich before Super Tuesday, March 6, a likely pivotal day when 10 states go to the polls. The Adelson family has already given $11 million to support Mr. Gingrich since December.

Mr. Adelson has repeatedly declined to comment on his donations. He "holds his cards tight to the chest because this has been such a seesaw primary you don't know where it's going to go," said Andy Abboud, vice president for government relations at Las Vegas Sands Corp.... (snip)

He's doing it to help Romney and says so.

There is no direct quote and the source is unnamed.

If somebody used such unsourced trash against your beloved candidate, I'm pretty sure you would object to it.

He hasn’t been vetted yet. Once info. comes out on his role in the K Street project, it will all hit the fan.

You would be disappointed to know that the very opposite is true about Newt's actual record and workload. Newt did not garner a 99% Conservative rating during his career for nothing.

It merely amazes me, as well as angers me that there is so much emphasis being made on Santorum AND Newt, based on ignorance and lazy resolve when it comes to actually knowing the truth about any of the candidates.

In fact, both Romney and Santorum are very much similar on their Liberal tendencies that is part of their actual historical record.

I guess we now know who the real stalking horse is. Mystery solved.

Get the word out ASAP Friend, spread it around as often as you can. This Santorum insanity will ruin us, and if we don’t stop it, we all lose.

What else could he say? “I’m incredibly upset, Adelson can only give money to me.”

Adelson is for Newt- if not, he wouldn’t have given him a dime- and he would have allowed Newt to disintegrate after Iowa.

The WSJ spin on this is wholly erroneous- Adelson wants Newt to be President— all else is cover and public relations.

If you can find a single quote by Adelson where he “says so”, I’d like to see it. Or, barring that, a named source who says that he heard Adelson say precisely this.

Disinformation B.S. that sounds like it’s coming straight from the Romney campaign, imo.

From this article;

http://www.tnr.com/article/politics/99323/santorum-corruption-k-street-project

At the center of all this was Santorum. According to Confessore, Santorum conducted weekly breakfasts with lobbyists, and occasionally Congressmen and White House staff, during which he attempted to match Republican Hill staffers with K Street job openings.

As Confessore put it, “Every week, the lobbyists present pass around a list of the jobs available and discuss whom to support. Santorum’s responsibility is to make sure each one is filled by a loyal Republican—a Senator’s chief of staff, for instance, or a top White House aide, or another lobbyist whose reliability has been demonstrated.” The group refused to meet with Democrats, and threatened sanctions against lobbies that did.

So Newt’s in the race to help Romney or was that supposed to be Santorum’s job? I’m confused.

I guess the lesson is, one shouldn’t believe what s/he reads in the Romney media.

The widely reported story by the Bloomberg Romney News was that Adelson had closed his wallet to Newt. Now, it’s that he’s giving money to Newt to help Romney.

For those of us who support Newt, we only hope that Adelson continues to give money to Newt- and we know exactly why he’s doing without media spin.

His lifetime rating is 90 not 99. In his first year in Congress, Newt supported the creation of the Department of Education and the Jimmy Carter approved Energy Mobilization Board.

Trump said Gingrich and Romney cannot stand each other.

There's no doubt about that.

Take the cotton out of your ears, I did NOT say “lifetime” rating, that was his CAREER rating while he was in office. (And I clearly said that.)

If he wants Romney to win, then doesn't he just bankroll Romney? Makes no sense.

"Andy Abboud, vice president for government relations at Las Vegas Sands Corp."

Well, probably anyone who can afford a vice president for government relations can probably bankroll anybody they think will be the next president, with some degree of confidence, somehow. Let that sink in a bit.

Thanks, I read it and sent the link to a freeper on another thread earlier today. He will also have to explain milking Pennsylvania taxpayersclaiming a property tax deduction and tuition reimbursement in Pennsylvania while living in VA. Believe that’s one of the reasons he lost his senate bid in PA in 2006 and lost BIG.

Santorum is a closet RINO and is quite dishonest.

The ACU only rates what you do while in Congress, so lifetime and career mean the same in this context.

That must explain why Newt is not putting any effort and money into Michigan, because he is tag teaming with Mitt Romney to take Rick out of the race,,, even Newt’s/Romney’s future money man even said that is what his very plan is, to take Rick out of the race.... coincidence ?

You are oh, so wrong again. The ACU also rates members of Congress annually. in 1998, Newt Gingrich recieved a 100% rating. Newt later recieved the 90% lifetime after being out of Congress and having aligned himself with lesser pursuits.
